Die jährliche Erholungsreise an die Nordsee steht für Henk van Bessen unter keinem günstigen Stern: Seine Ehefrau Greta hatte es in einem längeren Gespräch am Abend vor seiner Abreise zum ersten Mal abgelehnt, ihn zu begleiten. Insgeheim hofft er allerdings, dass sie noch nachkommen werde, bis ihn Kommissar Sonntag davon unterrichtet, dass Greta am Tage seiner Abreise tot in ihrer Wohnung aufgefunden worden ist. Ist ihr Tod ein Unglücksfall oder steckt mehr dahinter? Mit diesen Fragen muss sich der migränegeplagte Kommissar beschäftigen, während seine Assistentin von der Täterschaft des Ehemannes, der für den fraglichen Todeszeitpunkt eine Erinnerungslücke vorzutäuschen scheint, längst überzeugt ist. Nach mehr als vier Jahrzehnten kehrt Rechtsanwalt Dr.H. Curtius in die kleine Landstadt im Emsland am Rande von Heide und Moor zurück, wo er Jahre seiner Kindheit und Jugend verbracht hat. Er hat den wegen Betruges angeklagten Maurer Jan Schonebeek zu verteidigen. Während der Verhandlung vor dem Amtsgericht macht der Anwalt eine überraschende Entdeckung, die ihn über die Strafverteidigung hinaus unvermittelt in das Leben des anderen einbezieht und beider Leben eine Wendung gibt. In seiner authentischen Erzählung spannt der Autor den Bogen aus einer lebhaft erinnerten Vergangenheit voller Bedrohungen in eine Gegenwart, die - trotz allem - auch Anlass zur Hoffnung gibt.
Justitia, die alte Dame, ist ernsthaft und streng wie eh und je. Doch ab und zu verschiebt sie noch immer für einen kurzen Augenblick ihre Augenbinde und blinzelt uns zu. Anekdoten und Geschichten, mal nachdenklich, mal hintergründig, oft voller Humor und unfreiwilliger Komik - wie das Leben 'bei Gericht und drum herum' eben so spielt, solange der Mensch im Mittelpunkt unseres Rechtslebens steht.
