Valen Grimm first rode a horse in the most unlikley of places. When he finally arrived to where it brought him, he witnessed giants in battle (at least that is what he thought they were) and to make matters worse, met tigers nearly the size of elephants. But before all that, he had been alone on Had Wink, an island in the Cold Northern Ocean, fallen out of time. Unable to use his legs when night falls and at other very inconvenient times (going down stairs for instance) he is imprisoned in an old mansion, deep in a dark forest where there are no other children to be found and always watched under the horrible eye of Bendy Grimm, his father. When his tutor disappears a ship with black sails arrives by The Great Terrible Storm, and with it strangers who've come looking for him. Though his legs are failing him, Valen is determined to find his beloved tutor. On his journey he discovers boys on the island that he never knew existed. With the help of his new friends, they discover something hidden about the island, meet an odd, but beautiful girl with even stranger parents, and unravel something deeply mysterious which sends Valen and his new friends on an epic and at times dark, adventure. Having to flee the island for their lives can they escape before some hideous creatures capture and bring them to an even worse end before it is too late? Will Valen have the courage to go to a place he cannot see, with a strange creature he barely trusts?
Stress and Stress Coping in Cultivated Plants

Stress and Stress Coping in Cultivated Plants

Two experienced and well-known research scientists, each from a vastly different part of the world, have combined their respective expertises to provide the reader with perhaps a unique text which presents an in-depth treatment of the various stress manifestations and an overall discussion of stress in cultivated plants. Professor Bryan McKersie of Canada, who over the years has been active in research, teaching and agricultural application of scientific techniques, has dealt with and described cold, chilling, flooding, desiccation and oxidative stress phenomena: Professor Ya'acov Leshem of Israel, whose research experience and activities have centered around different facets of plant stress, has covered heat, drought, salinity and environmental pollution. Notwithstanding their different research experiences, both authors have cooperated and together have written a well-integrated and up-to-date text describing the major stress factors and problems which are limiting factors for optimal plant growth and hence of yield. The information assembled carefully in this book makes no claim to provide ready-made remedies to overcome the various stresses but in many cases suggests feasible and scientifically applicable approaches and partial solutions for stress coping, some of which are now in the process of being developed. This book is intended for research workers and students of agriculture and horticulture, for plant physiologists and is of overall interest to scientists dealing with stress physiology.

Most antennas are assembled from conducting surfaces and wires. The usual approach to numerical analysis of such structures is to approximate them by small surface or wire elements, with simple current approximation over the elements (the so-called subdomain approach), which requires a large amount of computer storage. This book describes a novel general entire-domain method for the analysis of metallic antennas and scatterers which enables the solution of a very wide class of problems to be obtained using computers of relatively modest capability. Antenna-design engineers, scientists and graduate students interested in the analysis and design of electrically small and medium-sized metallic antennas and scatterers will find in this book a self-contained and extremely powerful tool that circumvents most difficulties encountered in other available methods.

A young guitar player from Michigan is summoned to join a band in the seedy L.A. punk scene of the late 1970s, only to learn that his brilliant childhood friend, the lead singer, has disappeared. Before long, he is pulled into a noir-meets-leather world of sketchy characters on both sides of the law."Mickey Spillane meets High Fidelity in this musical punk noir...for any fan of Dana Spiotta's Eat the Document." - Dana Bonn, power pop/punk rock DJ, This Is Rock 'n Roll Radio"B.D. Love paints a gritty picture of Los Angeles circa 1979 with its music dominated by the punk and power pop camps and sundry characters. He takes readers on a sweeping journey from the Hong Kong Cafe in Chinatown to Doug Weston's Troubador in Hollywood and to the beach where, sadly, his murdered friend died, a crime he reluctantly pursues amidst the beer, whiskey, groupies, gigs, and cocaine. As he seeks the truth behind the murder, we see "the city of tiny lights" as he calls it, and its music scene, objectively from a visitor looking for answers as much or more as he is looking for a way out... just like every bad punk and most of the good ones." -Mat Gleason, Coagula Curatorial, Los Angeles, and Coagula Art Journal

"Philosophy has been defined as 'thinking things together. ' Every man, says Hegel, is a philosopher, and in so far as it is the natural tendency of the human mind to connect and unify the manifold phenomena of life, the paradox of the German thinker is not without a measure of truth. But while this is only the occasional pastime of the ordinary individual, it is the conscious and habitual aim of the philosopher. In daily life people are wont to make assumptions which they do not verify, and employ figures of speech which of necessity are partial and inadequate. "

800 years from now, humanity has taken direct control of its evolution and begun to explore the galaxy. Biology and technology drive one another in unpredictable ways. On worlds where all intelligence is somewhat artificial, person and machine minds have intertwined. Semi-biological ships roam the stars with augmented crews, all seeking to express their great drive: to explore. The GPEV Ocypete, freshly resupplied for a new multi-decade mission, initiates the farthest slip transit ever attempted to the far side of the Milky Way.The slip ends in a catastrophic accident. Trapped in a dying ship 60,000 light years from home, a decade from rescue, Third Officer Lt. Cmdr. Harpei sets out to locate other members of the crew in a desperate attempt to survive while also trying to unravel the mystery of what went wrong, and why.Selected from billions upon billions of citizens eager to leap from the surface of one of the Sixteen Worlds, the crews of the Expeditionary Fleet are among the very best of us. But even the best of us have limits, and surviving the Ocypete will push everyone left alive to their breaking point... and beyond. The bonds of crew, already strong, only grow stronger, forged by the necessities of survival. The Ocypete's survivors have to grapple with difficult choices while trying to make sense of the wreckage around them. In the still darkness, a malignant fear waits for any opportunity to enter the minds and hearts of those who would dare to dream of escape. As the full picture of the calamity comes into focus, they're faced with a final dilemma. How far would you go if it meant a chance to get home? What would you give? The Ocypete is B.D. Landis' first book, and the initial entry into a wider set of books, novellas, and short stories exploring the societies and technologies of the future, and more importantly, the people who made them. Fascinated by the interplay between culture and technology, he set out to examine the relationship between machine and human minds as they struggle to survive the unsurvivable. More than a tale of a crippled ship, The Ocypete also tells the story of the survivors as they uncover some unexpected truths, not just about themselves, but their mission and, ultimately, humanity's place in the stars.
