Nonverbal Neutrality of Broadcasters Covering Crisis

Offering a critical and sensitive reflection on journalists’ nonverbal behaviors during their coverage of school shootings in the U.S., this book shows how individual- and social-level factors predict broadcasters’ nonverbal neutrality. Nonverbal behaviors have the ability to transmit bias, influence audiences, and impact perceptions of journalists. Yet journalists report receiving little to no training on nonverbal communication, despite often being placed in emotional, chaotic situations that affect their ability to remain neutral during coverage. This book provides theoretical and methodological contributions, as well as applicable advice, to assist researchers’, instructors’, and journalists’ understandings of ongoing boundary negotiations of this rarely discussed but highly impactful aspect of objectivity. Through the proposal of the Nonverbal Neutrality Theory, it outlines predictive patterns and routines that contribute to the variability of nonverbal neutrality, and equips readers, including industry professionals and journalism educators, with examples of best practice to help better plan for crisis coverage. The work draws on journalists’ reflections on professional norms and conceptualizations of nonverbal neutrality, vicarious traumatization, and social- and organizational-level influences. As one of the first to explore nonverbal neutrality, its predictive factors, and patterns across crisis events, this book provides a much-needed insight into the nonverbal behaviors of broadcast journalists at a time when the media relies ever more on visual delivery on television, digital, and social media networks.

As a clear and user-friendly guide for clinicians who work with patients affected by psychosis, this book challenges the false notion that psychosis is untreatable through talk therapy. The authors contend that since psychotic symptoms are features of survival adaptation, they naturally serve as a valuable source of information, providing clues about the origins of people's psychic derailment along with a path to its cure. The authors advise therapists not only to read and respond to the messages embedded in the symptoms, but also to recognize and utilise the non-psychotic aspects of the patient in facilitating recovery. The overall aim is to recruit the patient as a collaborator in their treatment, thus wresting a meaningful and redemptive narrative from the psychotic experience. All aspects and phases of treatment - from initial encounters through the middle phase to termination, and even supervision - are covered in this volume.Abundant with clinical examples, theoretical and technical points, and treatment methods, this book is essential reading for all psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, and other mental health clinicians working with psychosis.

This is the first book in English dedicated to Caravaggio’s life and work in Sicily. It examines the four Sicilian altarpieces within the context of Sicily and in relation to his other paintings. This study sets the stage for Caravaggio’s arrival in Sicily by providing an overview of the cultural, political and religious climate. The four chapters are each dedicated to the universally accepted Sicilian altarpieces. These paintings are considered in terms of their patronage, iconography, possible references to local culture, the artist’s individual artistic practices, and technical studies. Another chapter examines the host of paintings attributed to Caravaggio during this period that may or may not have been part of his Sicilian stay. A concluding chapter notes his artistic legacy in Sicily including a brief overview of his Sicilian followers. The book adds to the already vast literature on Caravaggio by offering new avenues of inquiry into this extraordinary artist while in Sicily, his artistic activity there, and more generally, Seicento Sicily as an important place of artistic production, patronage and collecting. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history and Renaissance studies.

Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This forward-looking book examines emotional geographies as both a subdiscipline and a practice. Written collaboratively, the authors demonstrate the diverse ways in which emotions influence research, knowledge and everyday life, inviting readers to recognise emotions as a fundamental component of human understanding, actions and relationships. Chapters highlight how the study of emotional geography provides crucial insights into pillars of daily life, such as power, work, care and social change. Drawing on feminist and embodied traditions, the book combines conceptual reflection, methodological innovation and lived experience to outline the impact of emotional geography on key challenges such as political unrest, the climate crisis, migration and technological change. Tracing the evolution of the field, the authors emphasise its future potential in research and practical applications, as well as its capacity to foster a more empathetic world. A Research Agenda for Emotional Geographies is an illuminating read for scholars and students of human geography, the social sciences and humanities, and particularly those interested in working with emotions across contexts. Feminist, decolonial, migration and climate change researchers will also benefit from the book’s interdisciplinary approach.
