Virtue amidst Vice

Virtue amidst Vice

J. Daryl Charles

Sheffield Academic Press
1998
sidottu
Virtue amidst Vice represents an attempt to probe a relatively obscure portion of a relatively obscure New Testament document. 2 Peter reflects a social setting that presents a most daunting pastoral challenge. The danger confronting the Christian community is a lapse in ethical standards and a return-whether by mere forgetfulness or in wholesale apostasy-to the former way of life. 2 Peter's prophetic and paraenetic response borrows from the moral grammar of contemporary moral philosophers in exhorting the readers to recall-and validate through virtuous living-the faith they have received. The theme of the moral life runs throughout 2 Peter, with the various components of the author's literary arsenal subordinated to this thematic development. It is the function of the catalogue of virtues (1.5-7) both to introduce and to anchor the author's call to repel moral scepticism and reinvigorate the moral life.

For over 16 years, the ministry of Overcoming Believers Church in Knoxville, TN has ended every service and every prayer with the same faith confession, "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death." Revelation 12:11 KJV Christians throughout the world often use the blood of Jesus to overcome their adversity but neglect to use their testimony as a bridge to their breakthrough. The Word of Our Testimony - Treasures from Broken Vessels, is a series of short topical devotions that are written with the purpose of bringing encouragement to the discouraged, hope to the hopeless, help to the helpless and to once again set the fire of faith to those who feel spiritually burned out. Allow these candid testimonies from broken men, women and children of diverse backgrounds to stir up the gifts of God that have been lying dormant within.

Marianne Meets the Mormons

Marianne Meets the Mormons

sidottu
In the nineteenth century, a fascination with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints made Mormons and Mormonism a common trope in French journalism, art, literature, politics, and popular culture. Heather Belnap, Corry Cropper, and Daryl Lee bring to light French representations of Mormonism from the 1830s to 1914, arguing that these portrayals often critiqued and parodied French society. Mormonism became a pretext for reconsidering issues such as gender, colonialism, the family, and church-state relations while providing artists and authors with a means for working through the possibilities of their own evolving national identity. Surprising and innovative, Marianne Meets the Mormons looks at how nineteenth-century French observers engaged with the idea of Mormonism in order to reframe their own cultural preoccupations.

This book examines how working-class high school students’ identity construction is continually mediated by discourses and cultural practices operating in their classroom, school, family, sports, community, and workplace worlds. Specifically, it addresses how responding to cultural differences portrayed in multicultural literature can serve to challenge adolescents’ allegiances to status quo discourses and cultural models, and how teachers not only can rouse students to clarify and change their value stances related to race, class, and gender, but also provide support for and validation of students’ self-interrogation.Highlighting the influence of sociocultural forces, the book contributes to understanding the role of institutions in shaping adolescents’ lives, and identifies needs that must be addressed to improve those institutions. Current theory and research on critical discourse analysis, cultural models theory, and identity construction is meshed with specific applications of that theory and research to case-study profiles and analysis of classroom discussions. The instructional strategies described enable pre-service and in-service teachers to develop their own literature curriculum and instructional methods.
