Sask Book Awards nomineeFringe Theatre Festival hit showFraught with anxiety, little David is troubled why Nuns wear wedding rings, why a confessed killer gets to go to Heaven, why Protestants are buried on the other side of the fence, why there are many half-souls in Limbo because of his spilled sperm. A funny and sad memoir filled with a true cast of characters."... a poignant, vulnerable, and laugh-out-loud funny tale, recounting his upbringing in a staunchly Catholic family living on the Canadian prairies.""A memoir is only as interesting as its characters, and Loblaw's family has - well, character Yvette, a kleptomaniac whose tongue is a 'hilarious moral machete, ' has young David read the most scintillating bits of the Bible aloud to her laughing friends. You're a funny man, David Robert Loblaw.""This is a painfully funny love story that honours a brave mother who made hard choices for all the right reasons. Very enjoyable.""Some of these stories will make you laugh, it is true, but some will make you cry or rage. Some will make you argue with the writer. Most will make you think and remember.""Took me awhile to get through, as at times I had to stop. Stop and cry. Stop and laugh. Your writing reminds me of David Sedaris. An amazing combination of human truth with gritty humour."
David Martin was invited to go on the journey of a lifetime to meet with a legendary king...but he couldn't believe it. He was just a boy of twelve summers, and this was a man he'd revered his entire life. The honor was great, and his excitement was boundless. However, during the six-day journey to the castle David learned not everyone thought so well of the king, and he began to wonder if the man was truly the hero he'd imagined...or if he'd always been nothing but a legend.
DAVID is a biography of David Anderson, who in 1925 was born into one of the founding families of Standard Oil. The youngest of three brothers, David rebelled early against his elitist family, using Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky's raucous view of humanity as a guide. A Russian major at Yale, David Anderson's full, adventurous life has included three marriages, thirteen children (including steps), and three careers: corporate (General Dynamics); teaching (English, Russian, and history); and the Connecticut State legislature, where he was an early champion of climate change. During his 12-year term as a Representative, he evolved from Republican to Independent. At 94, Anderson is a leader of Reforest The Tropics, and a mover and shaker in Connecticut politics.

David struggles within his storm-tossed soul but cannot reconcile God's call with his personal hatred. Like Jonah, David decides to runaway. And like Jonah, finds that there is no fleeing God presence and purpose for his life. Captured and impressed into the British Navy, accidents and mishaps mount around David until he is thrown into the ship's brig. There David prays to God for forgiveness and deliverance from both his hatred and his confinement. The British release David and send him ashore, happy to be rid of him and God's judgement he has brought upon them. David determines now to go on and fulfill the call of God in his life to preach the Gospel to the Indians his parents once ministered among.

Now that I am eighty years old, I feel that I have learned a few things about living. Honesty: A person's word is his/her honor. There are times when it is tempting to tell a falsehood, but if the truth is found out, the trust of another person is likely to be lost, and it may not ever be regained. However, one should not be brutally honest if it will hurt someone unnecessarily, and there are times when a little blarney adds zest to a conversation and a relationship. Appreciation and Compliments: All of us have a need to feel worthwhile and of some importance, and honest compliments foster those feelings. Compliments don't have to be about big things. They can be about little things: "You look very nice." "The dinner was really good." Thank you's, both written and oral, are important. On the other hand, slurs cast a dark shadow on the speaker as well as on the one being talked about. Outlook: It is more enjoyable to be with someone who has a pleasant outlook than with someone who has a negative one. Sarcasm: Should be used sparingly, if at all. It has a cutting edge which tends to be hurtful. Graciousness: There are many definitions for graciousness, but the one I like best is that it is that quality which, simply, makes another person comfortable. It is the quality which is entailed in all of the above suggestions. My father-in-law, Dr. Tom Hawkins, was a wise man. He said, "Don't take yourself too seriously, and let your friends fight your battles for you." Doing nice things for others brings happiness, so be kind, and, if you want to have friends, be one.
