Archaeological Salvage in the Walter F. George Basin of the Chattahoochee River

David L. DeJarnette, the founder of scientific archaeology in the state of Alabama, reports on archaeological surveys and excavations undertaken in the Chattahoochee River Valley between 1947 and 1962. The three contributors, Wesley R. Hurt, Edward B. Kurjack, and Fred Lamar Pearson Jr., each made signal contributions to the archaeology of the southeastern states. With their mentor, David L. DeJarnette, they worked out a viable cultural chronology of the region from the earliest Paleoindian and Archaic foragers to the period of early European-Indian contact. They excavated key sites, including the Woodland period Shorter Mound, the protohistoric Abercrombie village, and Spanish Fort Apalachicola, in addition to a number of important Creek Indian town sites of the eighteenth century. All are here, illustrated abundantly by site photographs, maps, and of course, the artifacts recovered from these remarkable investigations. Copublication with the Historic Chattahoochee Commission
The Lockheed P-80/F-80 Shooting Star was the first American operational jet fighter. David McLaren's new book chronicles the development and early trials of the aircraft during Lockheed's groundbreaking attempts to create a viable jet fighter, in a period when jet propulsion was still an innovative unknown. This period also saw engineers and test pilots like Kelly Johnson and Tony LeVier facing many challenges, incidents and accidents as they attempted to create a new fighter from yet untested aerodynamic theories, and engines that were still under development. Also discussed are the record breaking transcontinental and absoulte speed records set by the Shooting Star. Detailed analysis of the Shooting Star's combat record in Korea shows why the F-80 flew more combat missions than any aircraft in the war theater. Also presented is a summation of all USAF, USAFR, and foreign countries that flew the P-80/F-80. David McLaren is also the author of Lockheed F-94 Starfire(with Marty Isham), and Beware the Thunderbolt!: The 56th Fighter Group in World War II (both titles are available from Schiffer Publishing Ltd.).

When aimless, nineteen-year-old boyhood friends catch war fever at the height of the Vietnam conflict, they dream of adventure, glory and the romance of victory. Within weeks of beginning their combat tour as U.S. Marines, one is dead, a hero who has selflessly sacrificed his life to save his friend. Grievously wounded, the comatose survivor fights to stay alive for the girl they both loved. "Finding David" is the touching story of young, unfinished lives, unquenchable love, broken hearts and haunted minds, and an enduring devotion to "Semper Fi" - always faithful.Although "Finding David" is a work of fiction, it is based on a war that fifty years later is still a source of pain that changed America forever. For many of those who fought the battles of Vietnam and returned to a deeply divided country, the scars of their service are often unhealed and untreated. It was in the wake of Vietnam that we began to recognize and confront one of war's most horrific legacies: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. "Finding David" is a story dedicated to a nineteen-year-old friend and classmate, David Michael Kirk, who survived just fifty-five days in the jungles of Vietnam as a U.S. Marine, in the hope that it helps to continue to raise awareness of the desperate need for greater efforts to help those suffering from PTSD.

This text documents the history, observations and lessons learned from the development and acquisition of the first very-low-observable combat aircraft. The book is a case study of the high-payoff, low-profile strike fighter development effort (code-named ""Have Blue"" and ""Senior Trend""). Most of the material presented in the book was once highly classified information. The Have Blue stealth technology demonstrator aircraft had its genesis in 1974 with studies of Soviet radar-guided air defence systems. In 1978, the Air Force initiated full-scale development of the F-117A under the Senior Trend programme, which aimed to create a weapon system capable of highly-survivable precision attacks against an enemy's high-value targets. In 1991, the aircraft played a key role in the air campaign against Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. The book describes the clear vision, strong leadership and teamwork, rapid-responsive decision making and keen focus on achieving an operational capability which marked the project. Also discussed are potential applications of the strategies used in the project to today's acquisition environment.
The F-14 Tomcat was the pride of the United States Navy for over thirty years. Students will discover the technology behind this jet fighter that made it such an effective weapon.

A spin-off of The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry R.F.D. became successful in its own right. The show aired from 1969 through 1971 and was consistently in the top 15 of the Nielsen ratings. Its demise was caused by the sudden elimination of rural-oriented series by CBS in 1971 in order to make room for more "realistic" fare. The show's popularity owed much to the casting; George Lindsey (playing Goober Pyle), Jack Dodson (Howard Sprague), Paul Hartman (Emmett Clark), Ken Berry (Sam Jones), and others who moved seamlessly from The Andy Griffith Show to the new series. Episode-by-episode, this is the definitive reference to Mayberry R.F.D. Each entry provides episode title, writer, director, regular and guest cast, and numerous other facts about it. Capsule biographies of guest stars are given within the entry for the initial episode in which they worked, while more detailed biographies of the writers, directors, and major stars follow the episode guide.
