William Dean Howells (March 1, 1837 - May 11, 1920) was an American realist novelist, literary critic, and playwright, nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters". He was particularly known for his tenure as editor of The Atlantic Monthly, as well as for his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day" and the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria. In 1856, Howells was elected as a clerk in the State House of Representatives. In 1858, he began to work at the Ohio State Journal where he wrote poetry and short stories, and also translated pieces from French, Spanish, and German. He avidly studied German and other languages and was greatly interested in Heinrich Heine.

The discoveries of Emile Cou are of such moment for the happiness and efficiency of the individual life that it is the duty of anyone acquainted with them to pass them on to his fellows. The lives of many men and women are robbed of their true value by twists and flaws of character and temperament, which, while defying the efforts of the will, would yield rapidly to the influence of autosuggestion. Unfortunately, the knowledge of this method has hitherto been available in England only in the somewhat detailed and technical work of Professor Charles Baudouin, and in a small pamphlet, printed privately by M. Cou , which has not been publicly exposed for sale. To fill this gap is the aim of the following pages. They are designed to present to the layman in non-technical form the information necessary to enable him to practise autosuggestion for himself. All readers who wish to obtain a deeper insight into the theoretical basis of autosuggestion are recommended to study Professor Baudouin's fascinating work, Suggestion and Autosuggestion. Although in these pages there are occasional divergences from Professor Baudouin's views, his book remains beyond question the authoritative statement on the subject; indeed it is hardly possible without it to form an adequate idea of the scope of autosuggestion. My own indebtedness to it in writing this little volume is very great. My thanks are due for innumerable kindnesses to M. Cou himself. That he is the embodiment of patience everyone knows who has been in contact with him. I am also indebted to the Rev. Ernest Charles, of Malvern Link, who, though disclaiming responsibility for some of the views expressed here, has made many extremely valuable suggestions.

"I recently discovered the diary of forgotten explorer Emile Marcel Etienne Peau while visiting a church library in Le Havre, France. I had been researching for a book I was writing on Normandie in the High Middle Ages when I came across this fascinating journal and was captivated. I wondered why this great historical figure was never heard of in modern times and if his discoveries should be put into modern history books.I talked to the local men and women of the area, but very few had heard of him. I only found one local person who heard of him, a very old fisherman. He claimed to be a descendant of Mr. Peau and said that his story is one that is a forgotten part of history. Still, he told me that at one time, this man was celebrated in the area, but for only a short time, as Christopher Columbus soon began his journeys, which overshadowed Mr. Peau.I hope through the publishing of this journal that this amazing man will soon be remembered as an important part of history."
