Memoir of Gabriel Beranger, and his Labours in the Cause of Irish Art and Antiquities, from 1760 to 1780
Sir William Wilde (1815–76), surgeon and father of Oscar Wilde, was an Irish patriot and antiquarian with a keen interest in the history of his country. This life of Gabriel Beranger (1729–1817), published in 1880, describes the activities of an Irish antiquarian in the eighteenth century. Born in Rotterdam, the Huguenot Beranger moved to Dublin in 1750 and opened a print shop. Historical pursuits were becoming popular in Dublin society at the time, and Beranger's sketches of ruins and monuments found great popularity. He went on several tours of Ireland, keeping a journal of his observations and the people he encountered, while making plans and drawings of antiquities with a view to later publication. Wilde's work, drawn from Beranger's journal and from the memories of people who had known him in his old age, offers an engaging insight into early antiquarian practice in Ireland.
The Social after Gabriel Tarde
Gabriel Tarde was a highly influential figure in 19th century French sociology: a prolific and evocative writer whose understanding of the social differed radically from that of his younger opponent Emile Durkheim. Whereas Durkheimian sociology went on to become the core of the social scientific canon throughout much of the 20th century, Tarde’s sociology fell out of the picture, and he was remembered mostly through a few footnotes in which Durkheim dismissed him as an individualist, a psychologist and a metaphysician. The social sciences and humanities are now being swept by a Tardean revival, a rediscovery and reappraisal of the work of this truly unique thinker, for whom ‘every thing is a society and every science a sociology’. Tarde is being brought forward as the misrecognised forerunner of a post-Durkheimian era. Reclaimed from a century of near-oblivion, his sociology has been linked to Foucaultian microphysics of power, to Deleuze's philosophy of difference, and most recently to the spectrum of approaches related to Actor Network Theory. In this connection, Bruno Latour hailed Tarde’s sociology as "an alternative beginning for an alternative social science". This volume asks what such an alternative social science might look like. This second edition has been expanded to include, alongside the original chapters, two key essays by Gabriel Tarde himself - Monadology and Sociology and The Two Elements of Sociology, as well as a significantly revised and extended introduction by the editor.

Graham Lount in his account of the North American Lount family attributes its origin to the emigration of Gabriel Lount who was "an unaccompanied lad of about 14 when he arrived in Pennsylvania from England in 1773 aboard the sailing ship 'Snow Britannia'. With a few minor exceptions, all persons bearing the Lount name in North America are descendants of Gabriel." Based on this Gabriel Lount would have been born about 1759. Over the years researchers in the USA and the UK have sought to identify the English parents of Gabriel Lount the Emigrant. Gabriel Lount is an uncommon name and intriguingly three generations of persons named Gabriel Lount, a grandfather, father and son, have been found in the parish records of Slawston in Leicestershire. More recent research presented here strongly suggests that Gabriel Lount of Slawston and Mary Cook of Brixworth in Northamptonshire were the English parents of Gabriel Lount the Emigrant who was born in Brixworth in 1754.
