A collection of poems by a pivotal figure in the literary culture of Stuart England. William Herbert, Third Earl of Pembroke, was a pivotal figure in the literary and political cultures of Stuart England. He wrote poetry primarily for social occasions: A debate with a friend, seductions or apologies to beloveds, or support for a deceased political ally. This volume collects his work along with an introduction, detailed notes, and other apparatus that explore the networks in which the poems circulated, the interpretive contexts suggested in miscellanies, and alternative readings revealed through scribal variants. The book also features five contemporary musical settings.

Harold Edward Bindloss (1866 - December 30, 1945) was an English novelist who wrote many adventure novels set in western Canada. Bindloss was born in Liverpool in 1866. According to his New York Times obituary: Mr Bindloss was more than 30 years old before he began writing. Previously he had roamed the world, farming in Canada and working in southern climes as a cargo heaver, a planter, and at other jobs. Broken by malaria he returned to England forty-five years ago and took up office work. But he lost his job when his health broke down and turned to writing in which he found his true vocation. He published some forty novels between the years 1902 and 1943. Many of his books had their locale in Canada. He returned to London. In 1898, he published his first book, a non-fiction account based on his travels in Africa, called In the Niger Country. This was followed by dozens of novels. He was a popular writer. One reviewer writes: A new book by Harold Bindloss is always welcome. He tells a story well indeed, but one likes his books best perhaps for the environment which he knows so well how to sketch. He has written charming stories of the Canadian Northwest and one remembers with pleasure his novels Prescott of Saskatchewan and Winston of the Prairie. The town of Bindloss, in the Canadian province of Alberta, was named after him. Bindloss died in Carlisle, England......... William Herbert "Buck" Dunton (August 28, 1878 - March 18, 1936) was an American artist and a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists. He is noted for paintings of cowboys, New Mexico, and the American Southwest. Early life and education: Dunton worked as a ranch hand as a youth and studied at the Cowles Art School in Boston, Massachusetts. He moved to New York City around 1903, where he worked as an illustrator for publishing companies. In 1912 he briefly studied at the Art Student's League, where Ernest Blumenschein told him about Taos, New Mexico............
For almost 40 years, Herbert was Britain's most popular horror author. With sales f over 50 million copies, he carved a niche in quality bestselling fiction all of his own. Famous for his Rats trilogy and The Fog, he broke away from the cut-and-thrust populist horror novels of the 1970s and 80s to more thought-provoking works, featuring the scientific reasoning behind the manifestations of the ghosts and spirits in which he truly believed. Books such as Others, Once..and The Secret of Crickley Hall bear testament to his growth as a writer and his continuing desire to chill his readers. Craig Cabell's exploration into the dark, sinister world of James Herbert is given incredible depth thanks to a series of over a dozen exclusive candid interviews. Drawing striking parallels between Herbert's career and the events of his life, this work sheds light on the personal demons which drove the boy from London's East End to become the per-eminent horror writer of his generation. Cabell, a friend and confident of Herbert's until the very end, shares personal correspondence and reminiscences - including one of Herbert's previously unpublished pieces entitled To Ye All - to complete a portrait of one of the most iconic authors of the 20th Century. Prepare to be gripped by the utterly adsorbing last chapter in the life of the Master of Chills.

In the early and mid-nineteenth century, Marguerite Blessington, who had been born in Ireland but spent most of her life in London, became a famous salonnière; she was generally regarded as an important contemporary author, but as no literary executor took care of her oeuvre posthumously, she eventually moved into the background. Her novels, partly informed by the silver-fork genre, are typical examples of Romantic Victorianism, influenced by the Romantic cult of the solitary male self, by the fascination with Italy, and by the 1840s vogue of crime fiction, while simultaneously giving space to ambivalent reflections about Blessington’s own Irish background. This volume, as part of ‘Chawton House Library: Women’s Novels’ series, presents her 1847 novel Marmaduke Herbert; or, the Fatal Error, a highly popular piece of fiction in its day, being reprinted in German, French and American editions within a year of its publication.

A picture book biography about an ordinary New York City couple and their extraordinary collection of art In the heart of Manhattan lived a librarian and a postal clerk who loved art so much that they collected it. Over the years, Dorothy and Herbert brought home hundreds of works of art—from little-known SoHo artists to luminaries such as Chuck Close and Christo and Jeanne-Claude—to their small, empty-walled apartment, much to the curiosity and delight of their eight cats and tank of fish. Their passion for art and support of artists was so impressive, Dorothy and Herbert became famous themselves. And when they gifted their extraordinary collection to the National Gallery of Art, their art became ours, inspiring new generations of artists.
The Herbert Shelton Reader: The Development of Disease, Food Combining Made Easy & Principles of Natural Hygiene

Herbert Shelton was, in many ways, a man ahead of his own time. Born at the close of the 20th century, Shelton was an adherent of the Hygienic movement and a tireless advocate of alternative medicine. Throughout his life he opposed mainstream medical practices; he warned that drugs were being over-prescribed and that hospitalization often made sick patients get sicker. Shelton dedicated his life to offering a different approach to health. He wrote extensively about the benefits of a plant-based diet, the natural healing properties of the body, and the importance of avoiding drugs and surgery. More than anything else, Shelton emphasized the need to become attuned to the natural processes of the body. He warned that "civilized" man had grown out of touch with the promptings of his own instincts, and that there was an urgent need to reconnect to the physical side of life - to eat nutritious food (raw, when possible), exercise, take in the sun, and get plenty of proper rest. Shelton warned that failing to listen to the body's natural needs could lead to serious disease. But he also believed that at almost any stage, the body could be set back on the right and healthy course.Herbert Shelton was a prolific writer, and it would be virtually impossible to read all of his works. However, Shelton tended to return again and again to a few major themes, all of which are included in this collection. Those themes include the nature of disease; diet and nutrition; fasting; and the Hygiene movement itself. In many ways, Shelton was concerned with what we might call preventive care today.Shelton believed that the doctors of his time were looking at the problem of disease backwards. He pointed out that most of the time, doctors don't diagnose a condition until it has reached a very advanced stage. In many cases, he wrote, medical men didn't diagnose the condition until after the patient's death, when an autopsy was performed. To Shelton, this was an absurd situation. As he wrote, "When a pathological condition becomes manifest so that a diagnosis, right or wrong, may be made, this is not its beginning. Indeed, its beginning may be, and often is years prior to this. Its development is invariably slow, gradual, insidious, causing little to no disturbance to the body and no visible sign of its presence."A body treated well - treated hygienically - will preserve its own health, Shelton argued. That's the kernel of his beliefs, and it's also the reason that he was so virulently opposed to mainstream medicine. He railed against what medical drugs, calling them "poison." But beyond that, he urged his followers to look at health, and disease, in a whole new way.Looked at correctly, Shelton believed, disease is not an enemy. It is an opportunity to improve one's own relationship to our bodies. It is an opportunity to reconnect with our native vitality and to come into deeper connection with the restorative forces of nature. At a time when more and more of us are living anxious lives, increasingly disconnected from the physical and natural world, Shelton's writings seem more relevant than ever.
