Ulric Dahlgren was a brilliant, ambitious young man who became the youngest full colonel in the United States Army at the age of twenty-one, yet died before his twenty-second birthday. This is the first biography of Dahlgren, and thankfully it was penned by cavalry expert and award-winning author Eric J. Wittenberg.Wittenberg’s account chronicles Dahlgren’s full life story, with a deep look at his military career and extensive connections within the nation’s capital, all of which led to the climax of his life: the notorious Dahlgren Raid.Like a Meteor Burning Brightly: The Short but Controversial Life of Colonel Ulric Dahlgren is based upon a plethora of source material, including previously unknown or little-used archival sources. Anyone interested in the Civil War in general, or just a fascinating life well-told, will want this book on their shelf.

In Like Leaven in the Dough: Protestant Social Thought in Latin America, 1920-1950, Carlos Mondragón offers an introduction to the ideas of notable Protestant writers in Latin America during the first half of the twentieth century. Despite their national and denominational differences, Mondragón argues that Protestant intellectuals developed a coherent set of ideas about freedom of religion and thought, economic justice, militarism, and national identity. This was a period when Protestants comprised a very small proportion of Latin America's total population; their very marginality compelled them to think creatively about their identity and place in Latin American society. Accused of embracing a foreign faith, these Protestants struggled to define national identities that had room for religious diversity and liberty of conscience. Marginalized and persecuted themselves, Latin America's Protestants articulated a liberating message decades before the appearance of Catholic Liberation Theology.

This book presents a systematic approach to the automatic recognition of simultaneous speech signals using computational auditory scene analysis. Inspired by human auditory perception, this book investigates a range of algorithms and techniques for decomposing multiple speech signals by integrating a spectro-temporal fragment decoder within a statistical search process. The outcome is a comprehensive insight into the mechanisms required if automatic speech recognition is to approach human levels of performance.

There's a lot going on in the 87th Precinct this spring, and none of it is good. Jumpers on building ledges, a salesman torn apart by an explosion, and to cap it all off, they find the dead, half-naked bodies of Irene Thayer and Tommy Barlow in bed together. It has all the earmarks of a double suicide: a note, empty liquor bottles, closed windows, and the gas on the stove turned up. At least this one's open and shut. Or is it?Something doesn't sit right with the detectives at the 87th Precinct, so Steve Carella and his partner Cotton Hawes decide to give the case a once-over. Routine checks can turn up interesting facts. Like Irene's mother, who has an insurance policy on her daughter. Or Irene's grieving, cuckold husband who's riding the ragged edge. Even Tommy's brother. Problem is, in order to find a killer, you have to prove there was a murder...A complex, captivating thriller that probes the deep recesses of the human heart, Like Love is a bittersweet addition to Ed McBain's 87th Precinct series and a rare look inside the softer side of hardened detectives.

These stories address ways that war alters lives in ways that persist long after the last firefight or strafing. In "Night Mission," two Marines who scan aerial photography make an appalling discovery about the targets they have identified. "Cadence Count" follows two Army draftees, one white and one Black, through weeks of basic training that turn surreal. In "Papa-san's Private War," a Vietnamese peasant seeks revenge after an obtuse lieutenant refuses to compensate him for the water buffalo the troops at a firebase have killed by mistake. In "The Inland Sea," the narrator searches in his history as the grandson of an educator and the cousin of a military officer for clues to his own decision to marry the wrong woman. "Harry and the Ugly Rug" traces the descent of Harry Waters from his service as a fighter pilot in Korea, where he strafed fleeing civilians, to his retirement near an American air base in Germany, where his guilt fuels delusions. In "Dawn Call," an Air Force veteran who teaches English in Saudi Arabia takes a predawn jog in Riyadh. He flings epithets like "Your Emptiness" at God for causing the death by suicide of a close friend.

Romantasy has taken over our book loving-world and there are dragons among us like never before from Game of Thrones to Fourth Wing. But dragons have been present across almost all human culture: from the classic fire-breathing and princess-coveting dragons of Western Europe to the wise and noble dragons of East Asia to the great monstrous lizards of Greek mythology to the feathered serpents of South America. In this anthology, the authors explore the more erotic side of dragon lore. What of sensuality at the border between earth and sky, what of the myths of kings and emperors being literally descended from dragons, what of dragons who take on human shape to learn mankind's ways? Humans and dragons have existed side by side since nearly the beginning of time-surely their desires must have crossed at some point. Like a Breath of Flame contains nine short stories that explore the theme of scaled sensuality from a variety of different perspectives. In this anthology you'll find tales of lonely mountain dragons with exotic tastes, dragons with the power to slip into their lover's dreams, shapeshifter dragons, unusual interpretations of the term "dragon rider," dragon-as-devil and dragon-as-god... and, yes, no less than two versions of the virgin-sacrificed-to-dragon story, each with their own unique twist on the tale. These stories of serpentine sexuality are certain to delight the senses. This anthology includes stories by KJ Kabza, Julian Oliver-Fenn, Dean Scarborough, Kannang Feng, Steven Schwartz, Dominic Santi, David Hubbard, Kimber Camacho, and Nobilis Reed.

The attributes of 28 different lizards are revealed in this STEM nonfiction picture book, while the story provides a subtle message encouraging children to be true to their own nature. The actions of 28 lizard species--the flying dragon that swoops through the air, the shingleback that sticks out its blue tongue to scare predators, the basilisk that can race across the surface of water--invite readers to act like a lizard themselves. The text by noted author April Pulley Sayre asks: "Can you run like a lizard? Sun like a lizard? Bob your head like a lizard?" Featuring brilliantly colorful, textured artwork by illustrator Stephanie Laberis, the book also includes extensive back matter with further information about the featured lizard species--their size, geographical range, why they perform the various actions introduced in the text--as well as details about lizards in general.
