Building America's Hanger: the Design and Construction of the Steven F. Udvar-hazy Center
The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center building at Washington's Dulles International Airport, the first phase of which opened in December 2003, represents the fulfillment of the Smithsonian Institution's long-held ambition to build a specialist facility to house the National Air & Space Museum's ever-growing collection of commercial aviation and space artifacts. As early as the mid-1960s proponents of the NASM were suggesting that the newly built Washington Dulles Airport could meet the needs of the Smithsonian as the ideal location for the display and conservation of its huge aircraft collections held at its store in Suitland Maryland. In the end the Downtown site on the National Mall won the day, and in July 1976 one of the most popular museums in the world opened it doors, leaving many aircraft behind at a 21-acre Maryland site. This copiously illustrated volume tells the story of the building of the new Hazy Center building. Beginning with the project's earliest conception and planning in 1993, when the US Congress approved $8 million for the design the "Dulles Extension", Lin Ezell celebrated author of Out of Harm's Way, Moving America's Lighthouse (2001) unfolds the story of the clearance of the site and the construction of the building designed by architects Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum. HOK remained true to the original concept a building that would meet the special needs of a large collection of air-and space craft, along with millions of visitors, but still fit the ambience of an airport. HOK's solution was a dramatic yet incredibly elegant building, featuring a massive vaulted space, reminiscent of the old zeppelin hangars, to house 200 aircraft a second "hangar" to house 135 space vehicles, together with specialist restoration facilities, research archives, an education center and Imax movie theatre some 760,000 square feet in all. Employing a lively and accessible mix of running text, special-feature sidebars and stunning large-format ground, installation and aerial photographs, as well as plans, photomontages, and detailed "action" shots, the author brings to life the details of engineering and construction processes such as the raising of the massive main hangar roof and explores the challenges and demands faced by the project team, of which she was a key member. AUTHOR: Lin Ezell was program manager for the National Air and Space Museum's (NASM) new Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport. Prior to her appointment to lead the Dulles team, Ezell was assistant director for Collections Management at NASM and directed the activities of the Museum's Paul Garber Preservation, Restoration, and Storage Facility in Maryland from 1986 until 1996. She worked as an historian for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for 10 years, from 1974 to 1984. While at NASA, she co-authored histories of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project and the Viking Mars landing program. My story begins with my amazing conception against all the odds. I have an idyllic childhood in post WW2 Britain and grow up in a lovely Surrey village. I enjoy my school days, complete a secretarial course at college and find myself a good job in London. I become a teenage bride in the swinging sixties My daughter is born in 1971 and life is good for over 44 years. In 2008 I am diagnosed with clinical depression that becomes increasingly severe while I wait for counselling, culminating in an attempt to take my life. I have absolutely no recollection of events but discover I was rescued from the train tracks by the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance. I survive with severe electrical burn injuries to my skull and side of my face resulting in the loss of an eye and ear. My left arm has to be amputated in order to save my life. I spend five months in the Royal London Hospital where the trauma team exercise their expertise to save my life and the amazing care of the medical staff aids my recovery. I am delighted to discover that I have a life completely free of pain, worry or anxiety: I not only survived I am cured I become a public speaker and as a volunteer for the KSSAA and the Katie Piper Foundation tell my story at amazing venues including The Chamber in City Hall, London, a University and a Women's Prison; I join a club for disabled swimmers and win medals in their galas; I sing with an amazing gospel choir. None of these interests had ever been on my radar yet now I have confidence to accept and relish new challenges. Life is very good for eight years but then a tragic event shakes my foundation and familiar symptoms begin to plague me; depression had returned just like before, leading me to another attempt on my life. Even more miraculously I survive again but with the loss of a leg. Unlike the first time I have to work hard at dealing with guilt, shame, panic and anxiety to reach a full recovery. In the end with support and love from my family and friends I come through and face up to my new challenges. I return to my choir, my keep fit class and my swimming club. I also accept requests to tell my story. Life is good again and I now have all the steps in place to keep it that way.

John Billingsley of Ashwick Grove in the Somerset Mendips of south-west England - agricultural pioneer and 'improver'. His story gives a unique insight into eighteenth-century rural life in the west country.
