Over the past two decades, postcommunist countries have witnessed a sudden shift in the electoral fortunes of their political parties: previously successful center-left parties suffered dramatic electoral defeats and disappeared from the political scene, while right-wing populist parties soared in popularity and came to power. This dynamic echoed similar processes in Western Europe and raises a question: Were these dynamics in any way connected? When Right Moves Left argues that they were. And that the root of the connection between them lies in the pro-market rebranding of the ex-communist left--the key explanatory variable. This book asserts that, though the left's pro-market shift initially led to electoral rewards, it had a less straightforward impact on left-wing parties' electoral fortunes in the long run. Traditional supporters of the left (working-class and economically vulnerable groups) were alienated by the new economic policies, and the middle-class voters newly drawn to these parties did not compensate for those losses. As a result, for several electoral rounds following the rebranding, reformist parties on the left suffered dramatic electoral defeats. In response, right-wing parties in their respective countries adopted more redistributive economic platforms consistent with preferences of former supporters of the left, and incorporated sizeable shares of these electorates. This contributed to the growth of right-wing populist parties in the countries with a pro-market left. The book traces this process in postcommunist Europe on different levels of analysis: cross-country observational data, case studies, and individual-level experimental surveys. It argues that scholars should incorporate the economic policy dimension when explaining the demise of the left and the rise of the populist right in the region. It also examines important parallels between the dynamics of Western and postcommunist countries by arguing that the idiosyncrasy of Eastern European politics has been overstated in scholarly literature.

As interactions go, what happened the next morning was most unexpected. Roger's deep sleep was only slightly disturbed; so slight as to allow him to offer no visible indication that he was awake or aware of what was happening. Roger's head lay to the side pointing in the direction of the door and, also, the enchantress with her head beneath the sheets. He decided to open one eye just a tiny amount to see what might be visible to him.Roger was in awe of this beautiful young woman. He was also speechless. As he began to formulate a response, Serina rose slowly from her chair."Thank you, Roger. I better not keep you from your work any longer. Thanks for listening. I hope I haven't frightened you?"Serina turned and smiled an appreciative smile."You are such an attractive man Roger. Please don't lock your doors at night. Getting through windows is something neither I or my mother are good at."Serena gave a wicked laugh and smiled."Oh yes, there is one other thing, Roger. Mum knows about me just as I know about her. We support each other. We are very happy to either share, or take turns. Thanks, Roger. See you soon."The EROS CRESCENT novels take you on a journey like no other - to places you couldn't imagine - a female friendly sex club or a privately owned members-only dogging venue; the toy-boy life of a writer working on the Amalfi coast and much much more. MARIA and the other novellas - JESSICA, HELEN, MARY, THE CLUB and JANICE - are extracts taken from The Fifi Code, Eros Crescent and Mount Eros.
A Less Agreeable Man: A Pride and Prejudice Variation
Dull, plain and practical, Mary Bennet was the girl men always overlooked. Nobody thought she'd garner a second glance, much less a husband. But she did, and now she's grateful to be engaged to Mr. Michaels, the steady, even tempered steward of Rosings Park. By all appearances, they are made for each other, serious, hard-working, and boring. Michaels finds managing Rosings Park relatively straight forward, but he desperately needs a helpmeet like Mary, able to manage his employers: the once proud Lady Catherine de Bourgh who is descending into madness and her currently proud nephew and heir, Colonel Fitzwilliam, whose extravagant lifestyle has left him ill-equipped for economy and privation.Colonel Fitzwilliam had faced cannon fire and sabers, taken a musket ball to the shoulder and another to the thigh, stood against Napoleon and lived to tell of it, but barking out orders and the point of his sword aren't helping him save Rosings Park from financial ruin. Something must change quickly if he wants to salvage any of his inheritance. He needs help, but Michaels is tedious and Michaels' fianc e, the opinionated Mary Bennet, is stubborn and not to be borne. Apparently, quiet was not the same thing as meek, and reserved did not mean mild. The audacity of the woman, lecturing him on how he should manage his barmy aunt. The fact that she is usually right doesn't help. Miss Bennet gets under his skin, growing worse by the day until he finds it very difficult to remember that she's engaged to another man. Can order be restored to Rosings Park or will Lady Catherine's madness ruin them all? A Jane Austen inspired sweet regency romance.
