In Important Innovations: Collection, Volume 4 we showcase innovation in green, sustainable, zero emissions energy innovation. The examples are fascinating and include outer space orbiting "magic carpets" of solar panels that soak up the sun and transmit electricity back to earth. Also, innovation in fusion technology, which is the same process that keeps the sun and stars burning for billions of years. Nuke fusion converts a small amount of hydrogen into electricity and promises to make other forms of generating electricity obsolete. We showcase small nuclear reactors travelling by truck to deliver power where it's needed. Commercial scale energy kites generating electricity from the wind. Rooftop devices that draw sun power to generate electricity and cold energy from outer space to heat and air condition homes. We detail the first trains and electric planes operating on hydrogen fuel cells. Also, we focus on huge solar farms floating on bodies of water for greater efficiencies. Highly efficient batteries developed from living organisms and powered by light or water are also detailed. The world is demanding cheap, efficient and readily available sources of green, sustainable energy. As a journalist, I'm finding the global scientific community is delivering exciting breakthrough innovations across the energy field. RING OF DOWNS The North Downs' Eastern Ring as a Mandala A ring of Downs echoed through the valleys and on the scarps above, singing of nature's life: the voices of our minds and hearts in harmony with wind and earth and air and fire, a patterned circle these create in pictures of ourselves. Ring of Downs, sequel to A Dog on the Downs, again explores the countryside through evocative images and 'landscape-triggered prose', but this time describing that part of Kent's Downs where the North Downs' Way splits to go northeast through Canterbury and southeast through the Folkestone Downs. In as much as this route forms an imperfect circular shape upon the land, so too have I read it to reflect a spiritual 'mandala' which Tibetans and Jungians regard as a symbol of wholeness. Here the inner, imaginative parts of ourselves are in correspondence with outer nature, that precious resource in need of nurture, right upon our doorsteps, wherever we might be.

Little Matches Lib/E: A Memoir of Grief and Light
"Gripping and true in all ways. This fine, affecting memoir will stay with me for a very long time."--Meg Wolitzer, author of The Female Persuasion"In this vividly written memoir novelist O'Hara shares a painful but ultimately beautiful account of her daughter Caitlin's life with cystic fibrosis. . . . Her compelling story will resonate with anyone seeking a light in the darkest depths of grief."--Library JournalIn the vein of The Year of Magical Thinking and Beautiful Boy, an emotionally raw and inspiring memoir that illuminates a mother's grief over the loss of her adult child and considers the hope of soulful connections that transcend the boundary of life and death. When their only child was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at the age of two, Maryanne O'Hara and her husband were told that Caitlin could live a long life or be dead in a matter of months. Thirty-one years later, Caitlin lost her battle with this devastating disease following an excruciating two-year wait on the transplant list and a last-minute race to locate a pair of healthy lungs. The sudden spiral of events left Maryanne in an existential crisis, searching to find an answer to the eternal question: Why we are here? During her final years, Caitlin had become a source of wisdom and comfort for her mother--the partner with whom she shared a deep spiritual quest to understand what it meant to have a soul. After Caitlin's passing, Maryanne began to notice signs--poignant, persistent synchronicities that seemed to lean toward proof of Caitlin's enduring presence.Weaving together a series of interconnected meditations with illuminating glimpses of life rendered via text messages, e-mails, and journal entries, Little Matches is a profound reflection on life and death, motherhood, the pain of chronic uncertainty, and finding inspiration in the unexpected sparks that light our way through the darkness.

‘Everything about [this] book, which combines a healthy dose of lucid neuroscience with a dash of sensitive personal narrative, delights ... a beautifully balanced piece of popular-science writing’ Boyd Tonkin, Independent 'For people interested in language, this is a must. You'll find yourself focusing on words in new ways. Read it slowly - it will take time to sink in.’William Leith, Sunday Telegraph 'An inspiring celebration of the science of reading.’ P.D. Smith, Guardian 'We were never born to read', says Maryanne Wolf. 'No specific genes ever dictated reading's development. Human beings invented reading only a few thousand years ago. And with this invention, we changed the very organisation of our brain, which in turn expanded the ways we were able to think, which altered the intellectual evolution of our species.' In "Proust and the Squid", Maryanne Wolf explores our brains' near-miraculous ability to arrange and re-arrange themselves in response to external circumstances. She examines how this 'open architecture', the elasticity of our brains, helps and hinders humans in their attempts to learn to read, and to process the written language. She also investigates what happens to people whose brains make it difficult to acquire these skills, such as those with dyslexia. Wolf, a world expert on the reading brain, brings both a personal passion and deft style to this, the story of the reading brain. It is a pop science masterpiece on a subject that anyone who loves reading will be sure to find fascinating.

Through the 1880s the very essence of representation, meaning and process in Western art were profoundly interrogated. Plausible representations of the external world were cast aside in favour of non-naturalism expressed in varying degrees, from modest distortions of reality to pure abstraction. The decades that followed, up to the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, were a complex, vibrant period of artistic questioning, searching, risk-taking and innovation. Concentrating on this period of great upheaval, this book will explore the constructive dialogue between painting and sculpture, and the influential roles played by three giants of the era, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, across European art as a whole. While acknowledging the centrality of Paris as a cultural capital, it will also uniquely highlight other centres of artistic ferment in Europe, from Brussels and Barcelona to Berlin and Vienna, and track the variety of routes into modernism in the early twentieth century. This fully illustrated catalogue will contain four essays, introductions to each city of ferment and biographies of the artists.
