A Problem-based Introduction To Special And General Relativity: Including Worked Problems And Discussions Of The Ehrenfest Paradox And The Maxwell Equations
It is Einstein's Theory of Relativity that braids space and time into a thread from which the fabric of existence is woven; it is Relativity that forces the existence of magnetism, and the Pauli Principle, and the biochemistry of living things. A Newtonian universe would be sterile. There is a fever-dream alienness to Einstein's theory, which offers students a first opportunity to see how profoundly different physical reality is from our familiar (and grossly inaccurate) classical picture. This divergence springs inescapably from a single, simple observation: the speed with which a beam of light travels through empty space is always, always, always 299,792,458 meters per second. It does not matter if the source of light is moving with respect to the measuring apparatus. The speed of light never changes. This book comprises fourteen units spanning Special and General Relativity. If used as a course textbook, the material can serve as the backbone of weekly meetings in which students work together in small groups (closely supervised by the instructor) to solve a number of simple problems, then to discuss the conclusions one can draw from the results. In this way, students will derive for themselves some of the surprising features of our post-classical reality. We will review mathematical techniques as required. Students will be expected to become comfortable using calculus to solve problems as necessary.Completion of each of the four longer problems presented at the end of each unit will require two or three hours.

The Laird of Cool's Ghost, Being a Copy of Several Conferences and Meetings That Past Betwixt the Revd. Mr Ogilvie, Late Minister of the Gospel at Innerwick in East Lothian, and the Ghost of Mr Maxwell, Late Laird of Cool
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.Delve into what it was like to live during the eighteenth century by reading the first-hand accounts of everyday people, including city dwellers and farmers, businessmen and bankers, artisans and merchants, artists and their patrons, politicians and their constituents. Original texts make the American, French, and Industrial revolutions vividly contemporary.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. On the Plains, and Among the Peaks: or, How Mrs. Maxwell Made Her Natural History Collection
American naturalist and taxidermist Martha Maxwell became famous in the 1870s for her skill and expertise in collecting and preserving specimens of Colorado’s wildlife but is virtually unknown today. On the Plains, and Among the Peaks, written in 1879 by Maxwell’s half-sister Mary Dartt, provides a fascinating case study of how women practiced natural history and taxidermy, as well as a fresh look at the early exploration and settlement of Colorado. Dartt’s book tells the story of Maxwell’s lifelong passion and dedication to work and education that made her a pioneer in more ways than one. It catalogs her important scientific contributions and development of museum habitat groupings and lifelike taxidermy mounts, showcases engaging accounts of wilderness excursions on the frontier of the Western United States in the 1860s and 1870s, and testifies to her resolve to show that women were capable of succeeding in traditionally male-dominated fields. This scholarly edition of On the Plains, and Among the Peaks will spark renewed interest in Maxwell and Dartt as neglected figures in nineteenth-century US history and literature, opening a conversation that other literary scholars and historians will join to further situate their work within the numerous disciplines to which it speaks, including nineteenth-century American literature; women’s, western, environmental, and natural history; and gender, museum, and animal studies.
Mathematics For Engineers - Volume 3: Systems Of Differential Equations, N-th Order Differential Equations, Fourier Series And Fourier Transform, Partial Differential Equations, Vector Analysis And Maxwell Equations, Splines
This third and final volume in our Mathematics for Engineers series serves as a companion text to the third-semester mathematics preliminaries for students and lecturers in electrical engineering and other engineering disciplines.Ordinary and partially differential equations play a central role in graduate engineering courses. This topic is one of the main focus of the third volume. In addition to describing engineering problems using differential equations, we analyze signals produced by oscillations and vibrations. This requires frequency analysis of the signals, which leads to the topic of Fourier series for periodic signals and Fourier transform for non-periodic signals. This volume provides students at universities and colleges with a vivid presentation of these topics as a practical aid to higher mathematics. Mathematical terms are clearly motivated, systematically equated and visualized in many animations. A large number of examples and applications illustrate and deepen the material, and the numerous exercises (with solutions on the book's homepage) make it easier to prepare for exams.
