Religious Education and the Public Sphere
Religious Education and the Public Sphere reveals, through an analysis of theory and practice, that religious education is resting on historic and persistent assumptions about both religion and education. Drawing on work from Arendt and Weil, new ideas emerge regarding religious education's constituent elements: education and religion. It offers a new and timely proposal for religious education and argues for a broader understanding of religion, bringing a fresh contribution to current discussions regarding the relationship between religion and education in the public sphere. Some practical considerations emerging from theory developing through the earlier parts of the book are presented in the final section, including the teacher's role and what should guide religious education curriculum. At a time when there is raised interest in the role of religion in the public sphere internationally, this book aims to contribute something new, both theoretically and practically, to discussions regarding the role of religion in education is and relevant to educational contexts worldwide. This book will be vital reading for academics and researchers in the fields of religion and religious studies, education, philosophy of education and religious education, and will also be of great interest to teachers and policy makers working in the field of religious education in the public sphere.

This book was written as the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic began to have a devastating effect on employment across the globe. The crisis has served to highlight many deepseated, often longstanding challenges to employment relationships. These include uncertainties and fears about the impact of technological advances, concerns about safety and wellbeing and controversies around emerging business and employment models. It is difficult to avoid the fear that the combination of these and other practices will lead to a ‘race to the bottom’. The book calls for a radical rethink and reassessment of the core values underlying employment relationships. In Work in Challenging and Uncertain Times, the authors take a refreshingly realistic view of how contemporary work relationships are managed and look to how they will need to change in the future. Some key questions are posed, such as ‘who is the employer in complex skills supply chains?’; ‘how do we ensure a skilled workforce in a context of fragmentation and increasing individualization?’; ‘in a context of AI, robots etc., what does it mean to be human?’ and ‘how do we achieve change and improvement’?Based on extensive research presented in an accessible and engaging style, the book provides insights valuable to students of employment relationships, HRM and employment law as well as to practitioners and policy-makers. It draws on a range of academic disciplines and thoughts from interviews with key practitioners and commentators on workplace as well as students.

Tawera and his sister are inseparable, in a relationship that is impossible for others to share. In fact his whole family is bonded by secrets, their genealogy stitched together by pride, shame and sometimes despair. Baby No - eyes has several threads running through it. One is the death of Te Paania's child, which is based on the true story of a dead child who was returned to her whanau with her eyes missing. In the years after her death, Baby has a continuing presence throughout the novel. The second thread involves an iwi group, who are involved in a land claim that results in them occupying a downtown council site. The ghost of Baby No - eyes accompanies Gran Kura, Te Paania and Tawera, as Te Paania immerses herself in political issues and Tawera becomes a teenager, and as Gran reaches the end of her life.

Spare, rhythmic text and pairs of simple circular shapes convey opposite relationships in the arc of a day in this very simple concept book. Dots here, dots there, you can see dots everywhere Some are loud, and some are quiet. Some are happy, and some are sad. Some dots even taste yummy, while others taste bad. Graphic designer Patricia Intriago sets bold, circular shapes against a stark white background to emphasize opposite dot relationships.

Seeing a Color-Blind Future

Patricia J Williams

Farrar, Straus and Giroux

In these five eloquent and passionate pieces (which she gave as the prestigious Reith Lectures for the BBC) Patricia J. Williams asks how we might achieve a world where "color doesn't matter"--where whiteness is not equated with normalcy and blackness with exoticism and danger. Drawing on her own experience, Williams delineates the great divide between "the poles of other people's imagination and the nice calm center of oneself where dignity resides," and discusses how it might be bridged as a first step toward resolving racism. Williams offers us a new starting point--"a sensible and sustained consideration"--from which we might begin to deal honestly with the legacy and current realities of our prejudices.
The Talented Mr Ripley / Ripley under Ground / Ripley's Game
Three classic crime novels by a master of the macabre appear here together inhardcover for the first time.Suave, agreeable, and completely amoral, Patricia Highsmith's hero, theinimitable Tom Ripley, stops at nothing--not even murder-- to accomplish hisgoals. In achieving for himself the opulent life that he was denied as a child,Ripley shows himself to be a master of illusion and manipulation and adisturbingly sympathetic combination of genius and psychopath. As Highsmithnavigates the mesmerizing tangle of Ripley's deadly and sinister games, she turnsthe mystery genre inside out and takes us into the mind of a man utterlyindifferent to evil. The Talented Mr. RipleyIn a chilling literary hall of mirrors, Patricia Highsmith introduces Tom Ripley. Like a hero in a latter-day Henry James novel, is sent to Italy with a commission to coax a prodigal young American back to his wealthy father. But Ripley finds himself very fond of Dickie Greenleaf. He wants to be like him--exactly like him. Suave, agreeable, and utterly amoral, Ripley stops at nothing--certainly not only one murder--to accomplish his goal. Turning the mystery form inside out, Highsmith shows the terrifying abilities afforded to a man unhindered by the concept of evil.Ripley Under GroundIn this harrowing illumination of the psychotic mind, the enviable Tom Ripley has a lovely house in the French countryside, a beautiful and very rich wife, and an art collection worthy of a connoisseur. But such a gracious life has not come easily. One inopportune inquiry, one inconvenient friend, and Ripley's world will come tumbling down--unless he takes decisive steps. In a mesmerizing novel that coolly subverts all traditional notions of literary justice, Ripley enthralls us even as we watch him perform acts of pure and unspeakable evil.Ripley's GameConnoisseur of art, harpsichord aficionado, gardener extraordinaire, and genius of improvisational murder, the inimitable Tom Ripley finds his complacency shaken when he is scorned at a posh gala. While an ordinary psychopath might repay the insult with some mild act of retribution, what Ripley has in mind is far more subtle, and infinitely more sinister. A social slight doesn't warrant murder of course-- just a chain of events that may lead to it. "Patricia Highsmith is often called a mystery or crime writer, which is a bitlike calling Picasso a draftsman." --Cleveland Plain Dealer"One of our greatest modernist writers." --Gore Vidal

This final, magnificent picture book from three-time Coretta Scott King Award winner and Newbery Honor author Patricia McKissack is a poignant and uplifting celebration of the joy of giving. "Misery loves company," Mama says to James Otis. It's been a rough couple of months for them, but Mama says as long as they have their health and strength, they're blessed. One Sunday before Valentine's Day, Reverend Dennis makes an announcement during the service-- the Temples have lost everything in a fire, and the church is collecting anything that might be useful to them. James thinks hard about what he can add to the Temple's "love box," but what does he have worth giving? With her extraordinary gift for storytelling, McKissack--with stunning illustrations by Harrison--delivers a touching, powerful tale of compassion and reminds us all that what is given from the heart, reaches the heart.
