The central argument of the thesis, the representation and reception of otherness, is followed throughout White’s novels with the support of a complex critical instrumentarium made up of postcolonial theory, reader response theory, cultural-critical frameworks, alterity theory, and narratology. Otherness in its manifold representations is a main component of Patrick White’s fiction. It functions on several levels and this requires a deeper entanglement on the part of the reader. The different levels previously referred to are embodied in the various Others who people White’s novels: ethnic Others as members of the Australian multicultural society and the Aborigines as colonial Others, as well as gender Others, who also play an important role in White’s fictional world. Reading Patrick White is an exercise in tolerance, endurance and acceptance of alternatives. But the efforts of the reader do not remain unrewarded. In his endeavour to change what it meant to imagine Australia, the writer broke down the barriers of what it meant to imagine otherness.

Noch lange Zeit nach seinem Erscheinen 1985 war dieser ..".spannend e] und artistisch e]" Roman in vielen Feuilletons zu finden und wurde bis heute ber acht Mio. Mal verkauft und in 33 Sprachen bersetzt. Auch das Erstlingswerk von Patrick S skind - der Einakter "Der Kontraba " - erfreute sich schon bei seiner Ver ffentlichung gro er Resonanz: In den Jahren 1984/85 war es mit 25 Inszenierungen und 522 Auff hrungen das meist gespielte St ck auf deutschen B hnen. Der Erfolg ist wohl der Schlichtheit und dabei dennoch bestehenden Zeitlosigkeit des Dramas zugeschrieben: Exemplarisch wird dem Publikum ein weltfremder Mensch unserer anonymen Gesellschaft, vorgef hrt. Diese Hausarbeit hat den Protagonisten im "Kontraba ," seine Einsamkeit und sein dadurch resultierendes gest rtes Verh ltnis zur Umwelt als Schwerpunkt. Das Werk ist laut Angaben S skinds im Sommer 1980 entstanden und wurde im Juni 1981 als H rspielfassung beim WDR aufgezeichnet, bevor es am 22. September desselben Jahres zur Urauff hrung in M nchen kam. Nikolaus Paryla f hrte in diesem Einakter Regie und spielte zugleich die Hauptrolle des Bassisten. Erst zwei Monate sp ter -in der Novemberausgabe der Fachzeitschrift Theater heute- wurde die erste Druckfassung ver ffentlicht. 1984 erschien das St ck als Buchfassung im Diogenes-Verlag. Mit diesem Werk gelang S skind sein literarischer Durchbruch.
