Rethinking Teacher Education is a thorough and critical analysis of the ambivalences and uncertainties that face those in teacher education. The authors draw on their different experiences of teacher education to try to make sense of current practices and where they might lead. The book analyzes past and present constructions of teacher education and offers insights into how a re-evaluation might address teachers' positions in relation to knowledge, learners, economic demands and democratic values. The issues addressed include:* political and economic uncertainty and teacher education* philosophical uncertainty and teacher education* modernist policy solutions* psychology: an agent of modernity in teacher education* sociocultural and other collaborative responses to uncertainty. The book will be of interest to all those involved in teacher education, including sociologists, psychologists and philosophers of education.

This new book presents a clear conceptual framework for understanding the transfer of policy ideas between EU states, together with an empirical study of regulatory change within European utilities. Policy transfer is a new instrument for understanding EU policy-making. This volume shows how the nature of institutions, interdependence between trans-national and national jurisdictions and social systems, relate policy actors across geographical boundaries, identifying four basic types of EU policy transfer and learning:‘uploading’– how member states compete to shape the EU agenda in line with their own institutional arrangements and policy preferences ‘downloading’– how states adapt to changing EU incentives and constraints ‘socialization’ – how EU policy norms are internalized in the belief systems of domestic actors ‘information exchange’ between national actors in the course of EU interactions leading to a horizontal diffusion of policy ideas. The authors use an institutionalist perspective to show how these forms of policy transfer operate across the diverse systems of governance found across the EU. Policy Transfer in European Union Governance will be of great interest to students and scholars of European Union politics and policy, comparative public policy and political economy.

Social inequality and social disadvantage provide an all too fertile soil that sustains the majority of the serious mental health problems suffered by children in our society. The complexity of the issues clinicians routinely encounter in working with children with mental health problems is widely acknowledged. However, few books concern themselves with how such difficult populations can be effectively approached and the strategies that are likely to deliver effective treatment to them. This book, based on a highly successful seminar for grant-giving children's charities held at the Anna Freud Centre and sponsored by John Lyon's Charity, provides pragmatic solutions to this major therapeutic challenge of our age. The chapters bridge statutory and voluntary initiatives and are held firmly together by the commitment to evidence-based, systematically offered, programmatic and innovative approaches that can help those who, although hard to reach, are in greatest need of our efforts: the socially excluded children and families in our society. As such, this book will be invaluable to psychologists, psychotherapists, counselors and family therapists.

Embodying advances in cognitive psychology since the publication of Bloom's taxonomy, this revision of that framework is designed to help teachers understand and implement standards-based curriculums as well as facilitate constructing and analyzing their own. A revision only in the sense that it builds on the original framework, it is a completely new manuscript in both text and organization. Its two-dimensional framework interrelates knowledge with the cognitive processes students use to gain and work with knowledge. Together, these define the goals, curriculum standards, and objectives students are expected to learn. The framework facilitates the exploration of curriculums from four perspectives-what is intended to be taught, how it is to be taught, how learning is to be assessed, and how well the intended aims, instruction and assessments are aligned for effective education. This "revisited" framework allows you to connect learning from all these perspectives.
The Bieberbach Conjecture

For over 70 years, the Bieberbach conjecture has intrigued the mathematical world. Many students of mathematics, who have had a first course in function theory, have tried their hand at a proof. But many have invested fruitless years of carefully manipulating inequalities in an attempt to establish the correct bound. In 1977, Louis de Branges of Purdue University took up the challenge of this famous unsolved problem, but in his case the outcome was different. He will be recognized as the mathematician who proved Bieberbach's conjecture. And more importantly, his method came from totally unexpected sources: operator theory and special functions. This book, based on the Symposium on the Occasion of the Proof, tells the story behind this fascinating proof and offers insight into the nature of the conjecture, its history and its proof. A special and unusual feature of the book is the enlightened personal accounts of the people involved in the exciting events surrounding the proof.Especially attractive are the photographs of mathematicians who have made significant contributions to univalent functions, the area of complex analysis which provides the setting for the Bieberbach conjecture.Research mathematicians, especially analysts, are sure to enjoy the articles in this volume. Most articles require only a basic knowledge of real and complex analysis. The survey articles are accessible to non-specialists, and the personal accounts of all who have played a part in this important discovery will fascinate any reader. 'The remarks by de Branges himself about the discovery of his proof should be read by all young mathematicians. He describes the difficulty he had in convincing the experts in the field that a mathematician, whose work was considered to lie in an entirely different area, had actually proved a problem of such long standing. When a mathematician is sure that he has the solution of a problem, he must persist until he convinces others or is actually proved wrong' - Prepublication comments by James A. Hummel, The University of Maryland, College Park.

The linear sampling method is the oldest and most developed of the qualitative methods in inverse scattering theory. It is based on solving a linear integral equation and then using the equation's solution as an indicator function for the determination of the support of the scattering object. This book describes the linear sampling method for a variety of electromagnetic scattering problems. It presents uniqueness theorems and the derivation of various inequalities on the material properties of the scattering object from a knowledge of the far field pattern of the scattered wave. Also covered are the approximation properties of Herglotz wave functions; the behavior of solutions to the interior transmission problem,a novel interior boundary value problem; and numerical examples of the inversion scheme

The Neolithic Flint Mines of England

Only rarely in Europe do the surface remains of Neolithic flint mines remain so dramatically for all to see as those located along the South Downs and in the Breckland of England. Even within England they represent a diminishing resource and only ten sites have been recorded with any certainty. As examples of our earliest industrial heritage they represent archaeological sites of the first importance and have a special part to play in the history of technology. However, despite a lengthy history of archaeological investigation, they have rarely been considered nationally as a class of monument. Although some sites such as Grime's Graves are well known through excavation campaigns, others are known only through obscure articles and unpublished archival material. Many of those that survive as earthworks or cropmarks have never been surveyed previously or accurately planned. Consequently, English Heritage has compiled detailed plans of the surface areas of all of the known flint mines and investigated the sites of other potential examples. Using a combination of field survey, aerial photography and archival research, this volume looks at each site in its own right as a major and important complex and - for the first time - offers a synthesis of the evidence to date.

Ever since its inception in 1829 the Metropolitan Police Service has seen change on a daily basis, not least in recent years with budget cuts and the closure of police stations. Recording the stories of these buildings, BEHIND THE BLUE LAMP reveals the histories of more than 400 police stations operated by the Metropolitan Police over the course of its existence, from pre-Peel Parish watch houses to the New Scotland Yard headquarters on Victoria Embankment. The lives of the officers who served and sometimes lived in these police stations are related, charting a developing social history across the capital of almost two centuries. An account of the evolution of the Metropolitan Police District is also given, including histories of the various Divisions, and details of the developing uniforms, equipment and badges of rank over the course of more that 190 years are recorded.
