Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading
This book presents models that capture the nonlinear response of piles subjected to lateral forces. Utilising a consistent approach encompassing new mathematical models, it offers solutions presented as closed-form expressions and underpinned by the same set of 3-5 measurable soil-input parameters. These focus on nonlinear response of mono piles, anchored piles, pile groups, and torsional piles, as well as passive piles subjected to soil movement induced in shearing, sliding slopes or excavation, and earthquake shaking. The models can also be used for pipelines and similar beam structures. Solutions are provided in the form of design charts, with each parameter obtained using available test data and illustrated with real-world cases. The models reveal, for the first time, the mysterious mechanisms of amplification resulting from back-rotation, which have incurred the collapse of structures such as the Showa Bridge and Nicoll Highway, as well as the distortion of piles during earthquakes. Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading is ideal for practicing foundation engineers and students at graduate level. Wei Dong Guo is co-founder of Hans Innovation Group and former Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer and is a Fellow of Engineers Australia by whom he was awarded the 2012 Warren Medal.

The complexities of designing piles for lateral loads are manifold as there are many forces that are critical to the design of big structures such as bridges, offshore and waterfront structures and retaining walls. The loads on structures should be supported either horizontally or laterally or in both directions and most structures have in common that they are founded on piles. To create solid foundations, the pile designer is driven towards finding the critical load on a certain structure, either by causing overloaded or by causing too much lateral deflection. This 3rd edition of Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading explores and explains design and analysis procedures for laterally loaded piles and pile groups, accounting for the nonlinear soil resistance, as related to the lateral deflection of the pile. It addresses the analysis of piles of varying stiffness installed into soils and rock formations with a variety of characteristics, accounting for the axial load at the top of the pile and for the rotational restrain of the pile head. The presented method using load-transfer functions is currently applied in practice by thousands of engineering offices in the world. Moreover, various experimental case design examples are given to complement theory. The rich list of relevant publications will serve the user into further reading.Numerous developments have taken place in the years since the second edition was published. Hence, new features in this third edition are added, and include new chapters on p-y criteria for crushable soils and rock formations, and a chapter on new challenges in analysis and design of monopiles for offshore wind turbine foundations and drilled piers with large-diameters. Additional subjects treated include updated group reduction factors on the behaviour of pile groups with a large number of piles, and the substructure method which is used in current engineering practices for laterally-loaded piles under dynamic loading.Designed as a textbook for senior undergraduate/graduate student courses in pile engineering and foundation engineering and related subject areas, this 3rd edition of Single Piles and Pile Groups Under Lateral Loading is also aimed at professionals in civil and mining engineering and in applied earth sciences.

From the Polepit to the Pulpit was birthed from traumatic experiences that guided the life and destiny of a young woman that would inevitably enslave her life to rejection, abuse, emotional and psychological death, but would later be resurrected by the Power of God. From the Polepit to the Pulpit reveals how God transformed a young woman who did not see herself as significant in the lives of others to a woman filled with passion, purpose, and exceeding potential. As a result of her resurrection, Racheemba has become a trailblazer in this generation, advocating for women who suffer from low-self-esteem, low-self-image and mental abuse. This book reveals the different circumstances that took place in her life as she encountered tremendous adversity and was defined by society as another statistic in the foster care system. But God saw in her what she could not see in herself and took what should have been her down fall and turned it into her uprising. In "From the Pole Pit to the Pulpit," you will be empowered to not see your situation as an obstacle, but as the vehicle that will catapult your life to complete wholeness that will supersede what you could have ever imagined for your life, ministry, family and your destiny. This book will prove to you that your life is not a mistake but a miracle that has been ordained to rescue the lives of others through the power of healing, deliverance and restoration. What you thought was "No Way Out," was God's plan of escape for you that took place at Calvary in way of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ from which you have been set free. Finally, you will discover the "You" that God has created and put here on earth to serve as a conduit to bring Glory and Honor to his name.

In 1836, the French King Louis-Philippe, enthusiastic for Southern Hemisphere exploration, supported J. Dumont d'Urville's plan for a circumnavigation focusing on the South Seas. D'Urville (1790–1842) had already distinguished himself on two Pacific expeditions and was eager to rival the achievements of James Cook. Between 1837 and 1840, the ships Astrolabe and Zélée explored the waters of the Antarctic area and Oceania in extremely harsh conditions: almost forty crew members died or deserted. However, d'Urville discovered a new portion of the Antarctic coast, shed light on the ethnography of several Pacific islands and brought back multitudes of botanical specimens. His impressive contributions to the fields of geography, natural history and ethnography were gathered in this ten-volume work, published between 1841 and 1846. In Volume 1, published in 1841, d'Urville recounts the perils of the journey from France to the Strait of Magellan, via Rio de Janeiro.
