In "Acres of Diamonds," Russell Conwell shows success is a spiritual idea--the result of spiritual principles. Though not a "get rich guide," Conwell's book shows how to find a fortune-if you know where to look. There are as many opportunities for success today as in Conwell's time, if not more so, because they are found first and foremost in one's own conscience. Through his ministry and philosophy that "all good things are possible," Conwell opened the doors of opportunity for untold millions. "Acres of Diamonds" echoes his core belief-that each of us is placed here on earth for the primary purpose of helping others. Conwell was a minister, the founder of Temple University, and two hospitals where no one was ever turned away for lack of money. He was also a famous lecturer. In his lecture, the story is told of a man who sells his farm to travel far and wide in search of diamonds. There is a moral to the story in "Acres of Diamonds," a story which Conwell presented as a lecture more than 6,000 and to untold numbers of people.

Bertrand Russell’s Life and Legacy
Almost five decades after his death, there is still ample reason to pay attention to the life and legacy of Bertrand Russell. This is true not only because of his role as one of the founders of analytic philosophy, but also because of his important place in twentieth-century history as an educator, public intellectual, critic of organized religion, humanist, and peace activist. The papers in this anthology explore Russell's life and legacy from a wide variety of perspectives. This is altogether fitting, given the many-sided nature of Russell, his life, and his work. The first section of the book considers Russell the man, and draws lessons from Russell's complicated personal life. The second examines Russell the philosopher, and the philosophical world within which his work was embedded. The third scrutinizes Russell the atheist and critic of organized religion, inquiring which parts of his critical stance are worth emulating today. The final section revisits Russell the political activist; it directs an eye both at Russell's own long career of peace activism, but also at his place in a highly political family tradition of which he was justifiably proud. This book thus constitutes an invitation, if one were needed, to the world of Bertrand Russell. Those new to Russell, but with an interest in biography, philosophy, religion, or politics, will hopefully find something to learn here. This may spark an interest in learning more about Russell. But this book is not just intended for the Russell neophyte. The book sheds fresh light on a number of topics central to Russell studies--his connections to other philosophers, for example. Scholars well-versed in Russell studies will enjoy grappling with the treatment given to these topics here.

Bertrand Russell: The Colours of Pacifism analyzes the tenacious commitment of one of the twentieth century’s most extraordinary intellectuals to the cause of civilization, progress, and human rights. Through his active and pragmatic pacifism, Russell sought to confront the problems stemming from the unstable and dramatic political conditions of his age: the beginning of the Great War, the establishment of the League of Nations, the rise of totalitarian regimes, the outbreak of the Second World War, the dawn of the Atomic Age, the escalation of the Cold War, the weakness of the United Nations, and the need for world government. His reflections on the subject of peace, which constitute the main focus of this book, led him into dialogue with some of the greatest figures of his time, including Romain Rolland, Albert Einstein, Thomas Woodrow Wilson, Leon Trotsky, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Nikita Khrushchev, and John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Shining new light on a lifelong preoccupation in Russell’s work and thinking, this essay is a landmark study that will appeal to students, scholars, and anyone curious about the philosopher’s engagement with the world around him.

Bailey & Russell's AdventuresBy: Jeff T. Seymour Through the adorable antics of a pair of puppies, Bailey & Russell's Adventures, first and foremost, teaches children about safety. During their adventures they make friends, and with those friends they learn how to communicate using technology but doing so safely. There is a hidden family element to the book as well. The friends aren't just other animals but kids as well, therefore they feel the need as superheroes to watch over them. The other hidden part of the story is these dogs were adopted, while not said, it's insinuated. Their mother is the Lady of the Torch, which is where patriotism begins. The educational elements cover math and history along with some cultural aspects about traditions during various holidays. There are also some elements where different language sentences are used to show the importance of learning to be bilingual as the child pursues growth. In short, it's a humorous book, fictional and nonfictional in some cases, that shows a kid can be a kid but do so safely while learning about different cultures and different people. Born in 1905, Bill Russell demonstrated diverse musical interests from an early age. A contemporary of John Cage, Henry Cowell and Lou Harrison, his significance as a percussion composer is well known among aficionados and his work as a musicologist of New Orleans jazz music is equally acclaimed. He was a major figure in the revival of interest in the music of that city, notably from his recordings of trumpet player Bunk Johnson in the 1940s. He became the first curator of the Tulane Jazz Archives when they were established in 1958. This is the first full-length book about Bill Russell's life that is largely 'in his own words'. It is based on personal interviews conducted with Russell about the diversity of his life's work, interspersed with views and anecdotes from his friends and associates written especially for the book, together with archive material and a wealth of photos. These sources are woven together to give a portrait of an extremely talented, modest man who forsook an academic career to become a champion of the music and musicians of New Orleans.
Bertrand Russell at the Free Trade Hall: Heroes of a Literary Loner
An ageing, self-taught literary loner - and a book-lover still, in a world increasingly dominated by electronic gadgetry - Brian Darwent here reflects on the literary figures of times now past who have loomed largest in his thoughts through many years of untutored reading (and writing), and sometimes penetrated his real life more deeply. In addition to the philosopher Bertrand Russell, whom he heard speak in Manchester in 1964 at the age of ninety-one, they include Kurt Vonnegut, Somerset Maugham, Malcolm Muggeridge, James Thurber, William Saroyan and the economist JK Galbraith - all in their day famous names, but too often missing now from bookshop and library shelves. As the author himself explains: "At my advanced age I hate to see writers who have meant a lot to me being elbowed from the shelves by new names. Of course you can't really complain. It's the sort of thing that must happen to most people, I expect, if they live long enough. You're left with the feeling that you've been caught out, somehow. Left up a blind alley. Protesting in vain."Blending personal recollections, biography and non-academic literary comment, the book is not a calculated product of cold research. Derived from knowledge freely absorbed over many years, its aim is to show that books - real books - and their authors can have a deep and lasting meaning in our lives.

Acres of Diamonds by Russell H. Conwell
Includes Conwell's 'Acres of Diamonds' and Robert Shackleton's 'His Life and Achievements'. 'Acres of Diamonds' is a lecture that Russell Conwell, founder of Temple University, delivered more than 6,000 times across the country. Through this lecture, Conwell debunks the idea that it is noble to be poor, an idea that far too many Christians share. He illustrates that it is our duty as Christians to use our gifts to honestly earn riches, because you can do more good with riches than without. Conwell successfully illustrates the difference between the popular expression 'money is the root of all evil' and the complete Biblical passage which states 'the love of money is the root of all evil'. The love of money is idolatry, but money itself is neither good nor evil. It is simply a tool which may be used for either good or evil. In these pages we learn the virtues of earning money through honest, hard work. We learn to look for opportunities to serve others in our own back yard by simply finding a need and filling it. If you wish to be great, begin with who you are right now, where you are right now. Follow these principles, and you will uncover your own acres of diamonds. Larry Hehn, Author of 'Get the Prize: Nine Keys for a Life of Victory'.

This book repairs and revives the Theory of Knowledge research program of Russell’s Principia era. Chapter 1, 'Introduction and Overview', explains the program’s agenda. Inspired by the non-Fregean logicism of Principia Mathematica, it endorses the revolution within mathematics presenting it as a study of relations. The synthetic a priori logic of Principia is the essence of philosophy considered as a science which exposes the dogmatisms about abstract particulars and metaphysical necessities that create prisons that fetter the mind. Incipient in The Problems of Philosophy, the program’s acquaintance epistemology embraced a multiple-relation theory of belief. It reached an impasse in 1913, having been itself retrofitted with abstract particular logical forms to address problems of direction and compositionality. With its acquaintance epistemology in limbo, ScientificMethod in Philosophy became the sequel to Problems. Chapter 2 explains Russell’s feeling intellectually dishonest. Wittgenstein’s demand that logic exclude nonsense belief played no role. The 1919 neutral monist era ensued, but Russell found no epistemology for the logic essential to philosophy. Repairing, Chapters 4–6 solve the impasse. Reviving, Chapters 3 and 7 vigorously defend the facts about Principia. Studies of modality and entailment are viable while Principia remains a universal logic above the civil wars of the metaphysicians.
