The Routledge International Handbook on Raymond Aron

This handbook is the most comprehensive volume devoted to Raymond Aron’s manifold interests. Providing the most up to date scholarship on Aron’s work - from his earliest to his last writings - it reveals him to be more than a philosopher and a sociologist; he was also a first-rate political thinker, an expert on international relations, and an insightful cultural critic. With attention to Aron’s politics, his conceptions of history and his ideas regarding the future, as well as his thought on war and peace, industry and ideology, it also considers Aron’s connections with other leading figures such as Julien Freund, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. A demonstration of Aron’s status as one of Europe’s greatest 20th century thinkers, The Routledge International Handbook on Raymond Aron will appeal to all those interested in appreciating the breadth and depth of Raymond Aron’s works and his contributions to our understanding of many modern socio-political questions. As such, it will appeal to scholars with interests in the history of philosophy, the history of sociology, social theory and political sociology.

The Evolution of Urban Heritage Conservation and the Role of Raymond Lemaire
The 1960s and 1970s saw a marked change in the approach to built heritage conservation. From a focus on the preservation of individual buildings, attention turned to the conservation, regeneration, and reuse of entire historic districts. A key player in this process was the Belgian art and architecture historian Raymond Lemaire (1921–1997), yet beyond those in conservation circles few people know of his work and influence or even recognize his name.In this book, Claudine Houbart traces how the change came about and the role played by Lemaire. She describes his work and influence and in so doing provides a history of urban conservation over the last four decades of the twentieth century and beyond. The first chapter summarizes Lemaire’s background from his training during the Second World War and his work as a Monuments Man immediately after the war, to his role in the drafting of the Venice Charter and his appointment as Secretary General of ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). The next chapter describes the rehabilitation of Great Beguinage in Louvain. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project was directed by Lemaire and is a perfect example of the restoration of an entire district. The following chapter provides case studies of his work in Brussels, demonstrating his methodology in action. The final chapter discusses the transposition of the model of the historic city to urban projects and summarizes Lemaire’s influence on heritage conservation today, particularly integrated conservation. His participation in drafting key conservation documents sponsored by the Council of Europe, UNESCO and ICOMOS, and his desire to revise the Venice Charter are discussed. The book’s conclusion reflects on what has gone before, ending aptly with Lemaire’s own words ‘the past, properly understood, is one of the references for judging the value of today and tomorrow’.

Not for the timid. Prepare to be offended This is the story of my brother who we all lovingly call "Wally". Wally was a unique character even in the developmentally disabled world. He never thought of himself as "disabled" but more of a leader of the less fortunate. He drove us crazy and I'm not sure he always knew it... Even when we told him about it. Tons of love in our family but if it weren't for Wally that was the glue, I'm not sure we would be as close as we are today. Read this story and I assure you that amazement and disbelief will follow... Even though the stories are true. Sometimes I think most people take things too seriously. In the moment, it's easy to get upset while it's happening to you but if you don't take it too seriously, you'll be better off. That's really what this book is all about. So many things happened to me and my family because of Wally. We should probably be in psyche ward at this point but we learned to laugh at the things he did. When people hear our stories about Wally they usually are amazed. Amazed at the story but more amazed that we can laugh about it. You might think we are ridiculing him but we're really not. We all laughed at each other out of love and frustration. It's a phenomenon for sure but you may know what I'm talking about if you have a certain kind of sense of humor. At this point, I can let people cut me off in traffic and it doesn't bother me a bit. When I see someone doing something stupid, I don't have that anger that a lot of people have. I can look in amazement and maybe have a good chuckle. I may very well fall on the floor laughing. So when you're reading the book keep this in mind. We loved Wally with everything we had. Mind, heart and soul. When I write about what happened, I tend to look at it from our family's point of view. So that point of view may be a little skewed and you may take it the wrong way. I try to explain our feelings in the book, but this writing thing is hard. lol. It's hard to get onto paper exactly what happened, how it happened and how it effected us. Either way, I hope you can have fun ready the book as much as I did writing it. I couldn't put the keyboard down once I got started because I would remember more and more and I went along. Kind of like now, I can probably list ten things that weren't in the book. Uh oh, a sequel? You never know. I think I got most of it out in this one. The next may have to be just a revision or something. I'll keep you updated. If you have someone in your life this isn't completely there in the brain dept, do me a favor. Try to take a step back and truly enjoy the situation. Try not to look down on that person. They could be the most brilliant mind on the planet but none of us understand. I think Wally was like that. I often call him a genius because of his perspective on things. He was something to watch for sure. If you ever wanted an expert opinion on anything, something from a different point of view. You could always ask Wally. And he would for sure tell you. He didn't hold back because he didn't have a care in the world. Including your feelings. Don't get me wrong... That kid would kill or die for us... No really, he would really kill or die for us in the family. That's the kind of guy you want around. All that passion he direct toward the bad guy. I don't envy anyone getting on Wally's bad side. It's the guys with a pure heart you have to look out for and Wally had that for sure. I don't fear the evil person. I fear the person the evil person is trying to hurt. Wally was a bear in that aspect. Read this book. If you want reality and insanity in a humorous format. This is it for sure. Wally will bring out every emotion you have. I think the stories will grab onto you and never let go. It will change how you think about people and treat people. Thanks for reading. This book is based on a true story but you probably won't believe it anyway.
