The Three Waves of Globalization

The Three Waves of Globalization

Robertson Robbie

Zed Books Ltd
2002
nidottu
Globalization necessitates a new reading of the human story, argues historian Robbie Robertson in this thought-provoking study. Its origins, he suggests, lie in the interconnections that slowly enveloped humans since the earliest of times. But things changed dramatically 500 years ago when humanity's interconnections assumed global proportions for the first time and produced what the author sees as three consecutive waves of globalization that have radically transformed human societies and their economic activities. Managing these revolutionary changes has proved difficult. Globalization is destabilizing. The first wave after 1500 destroyed over 90 per cent of North and South America's peoples and contributed to war and revolution in Europe. It also generated an industrial revolution that shaped the second wave in the 19th century. But in the ensuing rush to monopolize the wealth and power globalization promised, classes, nations and empires escalated their rivalries. Consequently the second wave also faltered and collapsed into depression and war. Now the same fate could face us again if we ignore the social and historical lessons globalization presents us with. A globalized humanity, says Robertson, has to develop a new consciousness of itself in order to effect global solutions based on an inclusive rather than exclusive reading of history.

During World War II Bill Sinclair wrote over 2,300 pages of letters to his beloved wife, Lisbeth. Discovered in his wartime valise, Bill's photographs and private papers are now brought to life, marking 75 years since the end of the Second World War. They provide a unique perspective and alternative narrative to some of the most important events of the time. On 30th July 1941 Bill Sinclair's daughter was born but it was on that same day that he embarked on a ship that would take him to war. It would be almost four years before Bill saw his daughter for the first time due to his posting to General Headquarters in Cairo supporting key offensives including Alamein in the Western Desert Campaign of North Africa and Cassino in Italy. He was mentioned in despatches and awarded the MBE for his part in the Italian campaign. Against the backdrop of war, when circumstances permitted, football provided a brief distraction and a glimpse of normality. Bill organised and participated in matches along with famous names of the time often in front of crowds of thousands. It is an opportunity to forget, if only for a few hours.

Country and Midwestern

Country and Midwestern

Mark Guarino; Robbie Fulks

THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS
2023

The untold story of Chicago’s pivotal role as a country and folk music capital. Chicago is revered as a musical breeding ground, having launched major figures like blues legend Muddy Waters, gospel soul icon Mavis Staples, hip-hop firebrand Kanye West, and the jazz-rock band that shares its name with the city. Far less known, however, is the vital role Chicago played in the rise of prewar country music, the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s, and the contemporary offspring of those scenes. In Country and Midwestern, veteran journalist Mark Guarino tells the epic century-long story of Chicago’s influence on sounds typically associated with regions further south. Drawing on hundreds of interviews and deep archival research, Guarino tells a forgotten story of music, migration, and the ways that rural culture infiltrated urban communities through the radio, the automobile, and the railroad. The Midwest’s biggest city was the place where rural transplants could reinvent themselves and shape their music for the new commercial possibilities the city offered. Years before Nashville emerged as the commercial and spiritual center of country music, major record labels made Chicago their home and recorded legendary figures like Bill Monroe, The Carter Family, and Gene Autry. The National Barn Dance—broadcast from the city’s South Loop starting in 1924—flourished for two decades as the premier country radio show before the Grand Ole Opry. Guarino chronicles the makeshift niche scenes like “Hillbilly Heaven” in Uptown, where thousands of relocated Southerners created their own hardscrabble honky-tonk subculture, as well as the 1960s rise of the Old Town School of Folk Music, which eventually brought national attention to local luminaries like John Prine and Steve Goodman. The story continues through the end of the twentieth century and into the present day, where artists like Jon Langford, The Handsome Family, and Wilco meld contemporary experimentation with country traditions. Featuring a foreword from Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Robbie Fulks and casting a cross-genre net that stretches from Bob Dylan to punk rock, Country and Midwestern rediscovers a history as sprawling as the Windy City—celebrating the creative spirit that modernized American folk idioms, the colorful characters who took them into new terrain, and the music itself, which is still kicking down doors even today.

Tourse, Mooney, and their contributors argue that schools alone can no longer meet the complex needs of children and adolescents. The overwhelming needs of school children require that schools institute massive coordinated and collaborative efforts among various disciplines and agencies. The authors propose a restructuring of schools and social service systems to respond to the needs for interprofessional collaboration. While they focus primarily on the collaboration of social work and education, they look beyond that to relationships with other allied disciplines in public schools and explore collaborative linkages with nursing, law, counseling, pastoral counseling, and other agents of society. The collection culminates with an examination of the realities of interprofessional collaboration in urban and suburban communities. This is an important guide for researchers, policy makers, and professional educators involved with school reform and systems change in the United States.

Learning Outside the Classroom outlines theory and practice that will enable and encourage teachers to systematically and progressively incorporate meaningful outdoor learning opportunities into their daily teaching activities in a wide variety of environments and with diverse populations of pupils. This is the first textbook based around the curriculum for prospective and practising primary and secondary teachers and other outdoor educators. The principles and examples presented are intended to be adapted by teachers to suit the needs of their students in ways that draw upon content offered by the local landscape and its natural and built heritage. Although the focus of this book is ‘the real world’ beyond the classroom, it is also about good teaching — wherever it takes place. While there are chapters on practical issues such as risk-management and supervising groups outdoors, the chapters on curriculum, sustainability, curiosity, responsibility, and educational communities will serve as a valuable guide for anyone interested in applying educational theory to practice.
