Crime, Madness and Politics in Modern France

Robert A. Nye places in historical context a medical concept of deviance that developed in France in the last half of the nineteenth century, when medical models of cultural crisis linked thinking about crime, mental illness, prostitution, alcoholism, suicide, and other pathologies to French national decline. This in-depth study of civil trial courts in any American city during the nineteenth century. Examining cases brought before the Boston civil courts between 1880 and 1900, Robert Silverman shows how the business of these tribunals mirrors social and economic changes within the urban community and how these changes made the 1890s a turning point in the function of law. Liberal America and the Third World

Liberal America and the Third World

Robert A. Packenham

In Europe after World War II, U.S. economic aid helped to ensure economic revival, political stability, and democracy. In the Third World, however, aid has been associated with very different tendencies: uneven political development, violence, political instability, and authoritarian rule in most countries. Despite these differing patterns of political change in Europe and the Third World, however, American conceptions of political development have remained largely constant: democracy, stability, anti-communism. Why did the objectives and theories of U.S. aid officials and social scientists remain largely the same in the face of such negative results and despite the seeming inappropriateness of their ideas in the Third World context? Robert Packenham believes that the thinking of both officials and social scientists was profoundly influenced by the "Liberal Tradition" and its view of the American historical experience. Thus, he finds that U.S. opposition to revolution in the Third World steins not only from perceptions of security needs but also from the very conceptions of development that arc held by Americans. American pessimism about the consequences of revolution is intimately related to American optimism about the political effects of economic growth. In his final chapter the author offers some suggestions for a future policy. Originally published in 1973. Ghosts. UFOs. Demonic activity. Shadow Governments. Margaret Sasha Davies had always felt more was going on in the world than the mainstream media was reporting. So when the left-leaning Brit met staunchly conservative Lucas Harrell while attending school in Charleston, an unusual and lasting friendship began. Lucas felt the same way and, over the years, the two built a large database of alternative news and paranormal material, investigating everything from cryptozoology to political corruption. Now a state law enforcement officer, Lucas feeds information to Sasha for her radio and internet show, Sasha's Realm. She, in turn, helps him solve some very bizarre cases. When Lucas is partnered with straight-laced Navy veteran Carol Ann "Skipper" LeBlanc, the pseudonym "White Man in the Graveyard" is resurrected to protect his identity as Sasha's source. From the Spanish Moss-draped oaks of the Low Country to the pine thickets of the Sand Hills, Lucas and Skipper confront some of South Carolina's creepiest haunts and legends. Like when a massive thunderstorm leaves rural Lee County without electricity and a long-forgotten nightmare from African-American folklore returns. A missing person case puts the agents in the middle of it all to face the dreaded "Flats and Blacks." They also discover that an old Cherokee blanket or a musty, stuffed animal can become the best friends that lonely children can have. They find out that even common farm animals can be trouble when filled with the wrong spirits and, of course, voodoo is nothing to casually dabble in. Lucas and Skipper are rescued by a WWII hero; the only problem is that he died in that war. A flamboyant Civil War officer also makes an appearance, to see how the South is fairing in the war of Northern aggression. Apparently, death isn't even the end of the story, provided you negotiated your contract well. If that wasn't enough, they stumble upon the descendants of a race of giants known as the Nephilim. Though not quite as massive as their forefathers chronicled in the Christian Bible, these "mighty men of renown" nonetheless prove to be quite a handful. And they've not forgotten the old plan to subdue the Seed of Adam "The white man in the graveyard," the old man said. "He's tryin' to put back what never shoulda' been let out." Those were the words that made Lucas a local legend and began his journey through the supernatural.

Pontious Pilate does not suffer fools well. Yet his reputation for harsh governing hides a just man, who is torn inside between his own sense of moral integrity and his duty to Rome. As Pilate holds court over Passover Jerusalem, a routine civil complaint brings Jesus of Nazareth before the Roman Prefect. Pilate's interrogation of the supposed heretic evolves into a passionately mystical conversation that begins to undue the Prefect of Judea emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Pilate is faced with a dynamic and engaging Jesus Christ that history has not recorded this intimately before. As Jesus begins to affect the lives of those around the Prefect, it is Pilate himself who struggles most with the questions his dialectic with Jesus raises about his life and beliefs.Robert A. Revel uses a powerful encounter between one of the most famous personalities to ever walk the earth, and the man who condemned him to death, to explore themes of individual responsibility, sacrifice, and what it means to be human.
The Parkslopian: Growing up in Park Slope Brooklyn 50s-80s and Iconic things of our time
Did you grow up in Park Slope, Brooklyn? Do you yearn for the old days, and wish you could have a more permanent scrapbook of the toys and games and mom and pop stores from your childhood? The genesis for The Parkslopian came out of a desire to broaden the scope of the memoir genre to allow the reader to place him or herself into the story, or to use it as a tool to share his or her childhood with loved ones. The memoir genre is criticized for being narcissistic-who cares about the memories of one non-famous person? Therefore, the series of Brooklyn neighborhood coffee table books that includes The Parkslopian was developed in order to crowdsource and compile recollections of times long past using modern social media. Rather than limiting the story of Brooklyn in the 1950s through the 1980s to one person's flawed memory, The Parkslopian is a compilation of stories about the treasured and iconic things that shaped the childhoods (and parenthoods) of those who lived in Brooklyn during the most fascinating era of the twentieth century. This coffee table book is divided into entertaining and bite-sized pieces, and does not need to be read cover to cover. It allows you to share your memories of Park Slope with your friends who grew up elsewhere, and compare the iconic things that were shared throughout the nation while contrasting the special elements that made the Park Slope heritage unique. It is a smorgasbord of reminiscences to last you and your loved ones years-an infusion of the past into a lengthy future. After the 1980s came to an end, a generation of yuppies started moving into Park Slope, driving up prices and driving out longtime residents. They may call themselves "Park Slopers" and believe that they saved the neighborhood from itself, but true Parkslopians have a much longer, richer relationship with the neighborhood and its former community. Are you a Park Sloper or a Parkslopian? Either way, your connection to the neighborhood is truly your own, but this book will help you and those you love recognize the building blocks that fed every single one of those relationships and ultimately tied them together. The rich history that preceded Park Slope's current state must not be forgotten, and The Parkslopian endeavors to keep the past alive, if only on the page. The purchase of this book, and the others in the series, will allow you to witness firsthand how the revolution of social media truly keeps us all connected-first to our own roots, then to our new friends. By using a language today's kids will understand, you can better share with your children what your childhood was like before Park Slope changed forever. It may be more expensive to live there now, but Parkslopians know that Park Slope's worth has long been established-and the reasons are now in print for the very first time. Join the fun by giving this book a prized perch in your home, and visit www.parkslopian.com for more information on Brooklyn and more nostalgia.
Prime Deceit: What If the Fountain of Youth Fell Into the Wrong Hands?
You Should Be Laughing At Them They get us into wars and never get us out. They get us into debt and never get us out. They want to run your life, but couldn't run a lemonade stand. And they laugh at us?They're the establishment, the powers that be-call them what you will. Guided by the unshakeable belief that they're entitled to rule, they've made a holy mess of America...and the world. Their Ivy League credentials only confirm that degrees are often bestowed on idiots. In the Kingdom of Lies, ruled by the Arrogant and the Absurd, truth is an enemy. So are satire and humor. If the pompous proclamations and inevitable ineptitude of these bozos leave you unsure whether to laugh, cry, or emigrate, why not laugh? What if the Fountain of Youth fell into the wrong hands? If there were a way to reverse aging, the establishment's decrepit fossils would want it. Brilliant researcher Ted Wirth and his team of scientists discover a hormone that extends the lives of lab mice. The government comes a calling...the powers that be have a plan.In war-torn Syria, among the many nations keeping the fate of Syria out of the hands of Syrians, a battle rages. Or does it? A suicide mission destroys a vital American industrial asset. It's terrorism. Or is it? The world's grand masters are moving the pieces in a game only they understand. Or do they?An author that can generate the phrase "Blow it out your ass, Mr. President. Send in Vice President Winslow." and make it believable gains my immediate applause and appreciation. To do so within a novel that so explicitly describes the pure evil wielded by the power brokers and administrators of our world and the degradations heaped on the rest of mankind with no thought of their own moral depravity, is genius.Teddy H. Jones, Amazon reader reviewAre you looking for...A satire that will make you laugh, think, shake your head, wince, and howl with rage...sometimes at the same time?Characters you'd like to know? It would need almost no alterations. It is tightly crafted, compelling, current, dramatic, and thrilling. Apart from its style, this book perfectly reflects the skepticism of the public in regards to the most powerful institutions of our day.Robert Gore is a find, and a gifted writer.Titus FlaviusFinally a book that is well written fiction based on plausible characters, not caricatures, without the blatant preaching of a thinly-veiled conspiracy theory; a book to actually enjoy reading.JohnFull disclosure, I also had received a pre-publication ebook from the author for review. Just as another poster did, I also purchased the book because I like it so much. Yes, I got it free and then went and bought it anyway I would classify this book as a real page turner and like all of Robert's books, once you start it, you simply do not want to put it down.Jean DunneStrike a revolutionary blow against the powers that be

Few Florida communities felt the impact of World War II as much as the Atlantic-coast town of Fort Pierce. With a population that soared along with its economy, the small city made an important contribution to Allied victory by hosting a major military training base. Prior to that, the war had come only as close as the German submarines stalking targets off the southern coast of the peninsula. In 1943, however, the U.S. Navy commissioned its newest amphibious training base in Fort Pierce, and tens of thousands of young men would eventually prepare for combat on the town's sunny shores. The intensive physical and mental training was hardly a day at the beach, and within a few months, Fort Pierce had become a major military post with a national reputation. It also became the training site of some of the most elite units of the armed forces, including the Scouts and Raiders, U.S. Army Rangers, and the legendary frogmen.
