Since the time of the Reformation, most of Protestantism has celebrated two sacraments - "baptism and supper". And while the Roman Catholic church and the Eastern Orthodox church celebrate five more, almost all Christians celebrate baptism and communion. This book will provide a brief history into the practice of those two sacraments, and show how those practices diverged over time between denominations. Part One discusses the celebration of the Lord's Supper (also known as the Eucharist, communion, etc.) Part Two will discuss baptism, and provides a chapter on the question of "Infant verses Believers' Baptism". Both sections discuss references in the Old and New Testaments, as well as the Early Church Fathers, the Reformation, and the practice of the sacraments today. An appendix discusses the question of whether the baptism practiced by John the Baptist might have had Essene roots. A Brief History of the Sacraments: Baptism and Communion

Part One of this book examines early Jewish and Christian thought on the topic of heaven. In the Old Testament, heaven is a place where God and the angels reside - but not (seemingly) a place where the righteous go when they die. By the time of the New Testament, heaven is starting to assume its modern connotation as a paradise where the righteous go to be with God when they die. This view becomes even more prominent in apocryphal writings in the early church. Part Two of this book focuses on the antithesis of Heaven - Hell. It also takes a look at Satan and his minions. In the Old Testament, there is not really a concept of Hell as Christians know it today. Rather, Sheol is a place where people go after they die - good or bad. In most references to Sheol, it is not clear that beings have any consciousness there. It is simply the "abode of the dead". By the time of the New Testament, however, Hell as we know it today has become a hot (or cold) place of punishment for the unrighteous, ruled over by Satan, a fallen angel. The inter-Testamental writings (Dead Sea Scrolls, Apocrypha) help bridge the theological gap between Sheol and Hell. An appendix which discusses the origins of the Apocrypha and the Dead Sea Scrolls rounds this book out.

What is the relationship of the church to theology? How does the church relate to the work of creative theological authorship, particularly when authors propose novel claims? Even more, how do ecclesial models, particularly of ecclesial authority, underwrite or authorize how theology is done? Saler takes up these challenging and provocative questions and argues for a fresh ecclesiology of the church as event, specifically as a diffusively spatialized event. Establishing this claim through the fascinating historical encounters between thinkers like Thomas More and William Tyndale, John Henry Newman and Friedrich Schleiermacher, Between Magisterium and Marketplace provides a theological genealogy of modern ecclesiology, arguing that modern and contemporary ecclesiology is a theological contest not between Barth and Schleiermacher, but rather Newman and Schleiermacher. Constructing an alternative path, Saler turns to the work of a diverse array of authors past and present to argue for a humble yet hopeful view of the theological task in light of contemporary ecclesial opportunities.

A story following an inner-city college student from a middle class working family in Brooklyn, through his journey to manhood. The book follows Peter Sassi through the trials and tribulations of all four years of his college experience. He is a computer science major at an engineering school. It explores romantic encounters and deep dividing family issues facing a young adult, as well as the peaks and valleys of adventures brought by his new found freedom. It delves into the importance of friendship and companionship and the dark side of emotions as Peter struggles through depression, anxiety and loss. Peter Sassi is not your typical college student and as a student at a commuter school, he did not have the typical college experience. Polytechnic University, located in Downtown Brooklyn, may not have the typical campus most would imagine, but Peter discovers that "his" campus stretches beyond the school's property and encompasses the entire city of New York. This allows Peter to obtain an internship for a large Wall Street Bank as a programmer, and it is the opportunity that the City can provide that keeps Peter going. College brings Peter independence, which gives him both happiness and hardship. As an only child, raised by a single mother, living in the comfort of his grandparent's home, Peter is raised as a typical Italian-American boy. As he ventures out to college, a new marriage changes the dynamics of his family which forces Peter to move out on his own and support himself as he struggles to maintain his sanity and continue pursuing his dreams. A big personal loss pushes Peter over the edge to an abyss full of sadness and prescription drugs, causing him to temporarily lose his grip on his hopes and dreams. With the help of his friends and loved-ones, Peter finds the strength to endure his personal demons and fight for the life he always wanted. His unique college experience leads Peter to a new sense of reality and hope, as he enters the "real world".

The ambitiously named Western and Atlantic Railroad ceased to exist in 1890, and at its peak commanded a main line only 137-miles long. Yet today, it is still one of the most easily recognizable names in the history of American railroading. Why? The W&A played an important role in two of the most famous incidents in the Civil War, including the Andrews Raid (a.k.a. Great Locomotive Chase) in 1862, and Sherman's Atlanta Campaign (1864), where it served as the Union supply line. This book will examine the brief but significant life of this famous railroad, as well as the history of its most famous locomotive - the "General". The book also contains a step-by-step "Retracing the Route of the Andrews Raid" section, which describes thirteen sites associated with the Raid that have extant remains. The "General" is the most revered and famous locomotive in the world. It was the star of the Civil War Andrews Raid. It was the subject of at least three movies, including "Railroad Raiders of '62", "The General", starring Buster Keaton, and "The Great Locomotive Chase" starring Fess Parker. It has been the subject of countless books and articles. The later history of the General is almost as exciting as the Chase itself. In April 1962, the General retraced its route from the Great Locomotive Chase under its own power. From 1967-1970, the General was the center of a complicated legal battle between Chattanooga, Tennessee (on one side) and the L&N Railroad and the State of Georgia (on the other side). Part of this battle included the blockading of the main line of the old W&A railroad just south of Chattanooga, TN. The legal battle went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to be resolved. This edition contains over 65 black and white photos, historical maps and engravings.
