Ned Cooper had made plenty of enemies with his loud vocal attacks on every religion that wasn't his, but it didn't seem to Halvar that was enough to justify a knife in the back. Nevertheless, there he is--dead as one of his own barrels. Then Guardsman Zoltan meets a similar fate, and with even more suspects given his protection racket on the docks and his constant harassment of the women in the souk. Are these murders personal, or might they be connected to the muskets the captain of the Belle Fleur was smuggling into Manatas? Was Master Albrecht making gunpowder for those guns? Will Halvar still have a job after his contract expires on New Year's Day?The intrepid Dane is once again knee-deep in corpses and on the wrong end of pointed weapons. Can he solve all the mysteries before his term of office ends? And what will he do, stuck in Nova Mundum, if someone doesn't renew his contract?
Pola Drach, Independent Eye in a city founded by refugees from a dying Earth, is hired to find a student's missing notebook. The problem is, the notebook was lost while the young man was engaged in activities deeply frowned on by his community.Pola tracks the notebook to the abode of the young "joyboy" her client was engaged with, only to find him dead and the notebook missing. Then her client himself is murdered, and it's clear someone very badly wants Pola not to continue looking for the missing notebook. Badly enough to try to kill her as well. What looks like a simple task becomes more and more complicated, and Pola must work with two other Independent Eyes to reveal financial skullduggery, blackmail, and forbidden passion that leads to murder.
Nothing is what it seems in the City of Lorr...Just ask Pola Drach, Independent Eye. In a city founded by refugees from a dying earth long ago, she pursues dark secrets and exposes the shadowy underbelly of society. Who killed the ambitious model? And was that who she really was? Who's forcing shopkeepers to buy worthless stock, and circulating funny money? Why is the youngest scion of one of the city's richest families suddenly a target? Most important for Pola--Who wants her dead?
Winterfest is no holiday for Independent Eye Pola Drach. It started simply enough-a missing young woman. Granted, there's no love lost between Pola and Captain Sara Atterson, but that's irrelevant. A job is a job. This one takes her deep into the world of artists and the theater, which is a different experience from digging in the closets of the wealthy. She's not impressed.Audra Martino was an innocent, drawn to causes to "save things", as one fellow apprentice said. What happened to her after she left the gallery where her work was exhibited for the first time? And what happened to her sketchbook? There are secrets in the dark, and before Pola is done she'll go deep into more than one.
The sole purpose of this collection of short stories is to make you laugh. As a veterinarian, my chief source of humor is animals, so most of the stories are about animals. Here you will find bears flying airplanes, tortoises with dyslexia, cats rescuing teddy bears, purple sea dragons rescuing humans, and baby birds going to school on a work truck. Have fun
Female athletes are too often perceived as interlopers in the historically male-dominated world of sports. Obstacles specific to women are of particular focus in A Locker Room of Her Own. Race, sexual orientation, and the similar qualities ancillary to gender bear special exploration in how they impact an athlete's story. Central to this volume is the contention that women in their role as inherent outsiders are placed in a unique position even more complicated than the usual experiences of inequality and discord associated with race and sports. The contributors explore and critique the notion that in order to be considered among the pantheon of athletic heroes one cannot deviate from the traditional demographic profile, that of the white male. These essays look specifically and critically at the nature of gender and sexuality within the contested nexus of race, reputation, and sport. The collection explores the reputations of iconic and pioneering sports figures and the cultural and social forces that helped to forge their unique and often problematic legacies. Women athletes discussed in this volume include Babe Didrikson Zaharias, the women of the AAGPBL, Billie Jean King, Venus and Serena Williams, Marion Jones, Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova, Sheryl Swoopes, Florence Griffith Joyner, Roberta Gibb and Kathrine Switzer, and Danica Patrick.

Roberta J. Newman and Joel Nathan Rosen have written an authoritative social history of the Negro Leagues. This book examines how the relationship between black baseball and black businesses functioned, particularly in urban areas with significant African American populations--Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Newark, New York, Philadelphia, and more. Inextricably bound together by circumstance, these sports and business alliances faced destruction and upheaval. Once Jackie Robinson and a select handful of black baseball's elite gained acceptance in Major League Baseball and financial stability in the mainstream economy, shock waves traveled throughout the black business world. Though the economic impact on Negro League baseball is perhaps obvious due to its demise, the impact on other black-owned businesses and on segregated neighborhoods is often undervalued if not outright ignored in current accounts. There have been many books written on great individual players who played in the Negro Leagues and/or integrated the Major Leagues. But Newman and Rosen move beyond hagiography to analyze what happens when a community has its economic footing undermined while simultaneously being called upon to celebrate a larger social progress. In this regard, Black Baseball, Black Business moves beyond the diamond to explore baseball's desegregation narrative in a critical and wide ranging fashion.
Parents want a special relationship with their children Parents care. They want to guide their children through the rough spots in life and help them make the right decisions. Research shows that a special parental connection is extremely important in safeguarding children against dangers such as substance abuse, sexual promiscuity, criminal activity, and suicide. This is more important than ever before in today's troubled world. But what does making this connection mean? Based on Bowen family systems theory, Connecting with Our Children shows parents how to build the connection found in better relationships. Now parents have a new way to think about and respond to family problems. The author examines common concerns, such as: * How substance abuse can repeat through generations* Why fusions between family members drive conflict* How family anxiety can erupt into violence* Whether stepfamilies can create a new family unit* What roles faith and humor play in a family* How effective are special contributions made by connections with grandparentsNumerous practical examples and stories illustrate familiar situations and concerns, so that parents can learn how to deal with the often confusing situations surrounding their children, as well as those within their own lives. With a different perspective, parents can learn to overcome these difficulties, creating a stronger family and a happier, more open relationship between parent and child.
