Ruth Fischer (1895-1961) war 1924/25 weltweit die erste Frau an der Spitze einer Massenpartei: der Kommunistischen Partei Deutschlands. Wie niemand sonst stand sie fur die Angleichung der KPD an das autoritare sowjetische Parteimodell. Spater wurde sie - von Hitler und Stalin verfolgt - zur leidenschaftlichen Antikommunistin, die in den USA sogar gegen ihre Bruder Gerhart und Hanns Eisler sowie gegen Bertolt Brecht aussagte. Zuletzt suchte sie wieder Anschluss an eine undogmatische Linke. Ruth Fischers bewegtes Leben wird in dieser Biographie auf der Grundlage bisher unerschlossener Archivquellen, darunter FBI-Akten, erstmals ausfuhrlich dargestellt. Das Buch zeigt exemplarisch, wie Kommunismus und Antikommunismus sich im Kalten Krieg in einer Person verschranken konnten. Nicht nur bei zwei Tanz-Szenen und einem Tanz-Essay arbeiteten die Tanzerin, Choreographin und Regisseurin Ruth Berghaus und ihr Ehemann, der Komponist Paul Dessau, zusammen. Auch bei Inszenierungen von Opern wie Die Verurteilung des Lukullus, Herr Puntila und sein Knecht Matti, Lanzelot, Einstein und Leonce und Lena trug jeder der beiden Partner auf eigenstandige Weise zu musiktheatralen Ereignissen bei, die nicht selten ins Fahrwasser kulturpolitischer Diskussionen gerieten. An intimate reflection on loss, mourning and memory, made manifest through Manenti's spectral black-and-white photography Upon receiving a large-format camera in 2012, the American photographer Ruth Lauer Manenti (born 1968) at last accessed a poetic sensibility she had first sought within drawing and painting. Her spectral photographs evoke the ephemeral motion of life and the vertiginous memories it impresses. In her new series, 4 Sides of The Table, made from 2022 to 2024, Manenti continues her meditation upon time's passage. The inciting image for this series emerged from an intimate, sorrowful scene: her mother's best friend, June, reading poetry as Manenti's mother lay dying in bed. In the wake of loss, Manenti found within June a maternal replacement. She began photographing June in segmented parts from various angles: hands, legs, front, back, partial views. When June's own daughter unexpectedly died, Manenti, too, became a replacement. Together, Manenti and June document the poignant work of mourning--the effort to preserve the unseen through new material forms.
