The words came from his mouth,'Don't say anything about this to your mum. She won't believe you.' At the age of 11, a beautiful happy girl found herself thrust into a nightmare of abuse and violation that ripped her world apart. At the mercy of three men, she endured a four-year ordeal of sexual exploitation and degradation before eventually finding the strength to say 'no more'. Confusion and shame made her keep her secret for 16 years. This is her remarkable story. Sarah has endured what no child should. Subjected to extreme abuse from a family 'friend', she turned to her father only to experience the same treatment from him. Utterly devastated, Sarah even stared to wonder if she was somehow to blame for this most unforgivable of betrayals and was driven to attempted suicide - a life was nearly destroyed by the selfishness of three deeply troubled and wicked men.

Sarah's Laughter provides a reflection on suffering that is deeply personal and both theologically and philosophically astute.Vinoth Ramachandra draws on his distinctive positioning as a Sri Lankan Christian theologian - one who has lived and ministered in contexts shaped by the destruction of natural disasters and the violence of human evil - to confront the intellectual, moral, and political challenges posed to faith in the increasingly broken world of the twenty-first century. Yet far from being an abstract discussion of theodicy, this book is intimate and vulnerable, embracing the biblical practice of lament and inviting an authentic response to grief - one that makes space for serious doubt and profound questioning. Sharing his own ongoing journey with suffering and a questing faith, Ramachandra reminds us that lament and joy, faith and protest, clarity and ambiguity, belong together in faithful Christian discipleship. It is not in bypassing the darkness of the world, but in embracing it - in imitation of the incarnate God - that we may glimpse the new creation.

Sarah Winchester was a brilliant, creative and generous woman. She lost her only child, Annie, at six weeks old. Her beloved husband William, heir to the Winchester Rifle fortune, died at a young age from tuberculosis. Sarah never recovered from her two heartbreaking losses. Yet through all her pain she was focused on helping those in need.Sarah spent major parts of her adult life on two building projects. Both of them live on today, 97 years after her death. In San Jose, California, Sarah built an architectural marvel, a mansion in the American Queen Anne revival style reflecting great beauty and great innovation. The mansion has operated since 1923 as a tourist attraction known as the Winchester Mystery House. The house is a California Historical Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout the years rumors have been associated with Sarah and her house. The rumors suggest that the grief-stricken widow sought comfort from a medium in Boston who told her she was being cursed by the spirits of those killed by the Winchester rifle. She should move west, the medium said, and build a house and never stop building. As long as construction continued, she was told, she would not die. The rooms would shelter the good spirits and the sound of hammers would drive away the bad spirits. These rumors led to Sarah being portrayed as eccentric and crazy. In West Haven, Connecticut, Sarah funded the building and operation of a hospital for patients with tuberculosis. The hospital, honoring her husband, was named the William Wirt Winchester Annex for Tuberculosis. Sarah was especially concerned with helping those of limited economic means. Over the years thousands of lives have been saved through the work of this hospital. Although the hospital no longer exists, the fund Sarah created continues to support the Winchester Chest Clinic, now part of the Yale New Haven Hospital.Sarah's hospital remains virtually unknown, whereas Sarah's mansion is toured by a steady stream of visitors from around the world. The mansion was the setting for the 2018 film Winchester, a paranormal thriller starring Academy-Award-winning actress Helen Mirren. The movie was advertised as "inspired by true events." It is true that Sarah and the house both existed, but that is where the "true" events end. The rumors surrounding the house continue to be told. Historical research including newspaper and magazine articles, personal correspondence, and interviews with Sarah's contemporaries reveals an alternative explanation of Sarah Winchester and her mansion.

"When you give something, you cannot expect it to be returned." So says Lady Matcham when she gives Sarah the beautiful blue cloak to keep her warm on her long journey from North Hampshire to Sussex. It's 1814 and rumours abound in the country. Will Napoleon attempt to invade, despite his losses at Trafalgar? Aunt Babs, who is expecting another baby, has had a serious fall and thirteen-year-old Sarah has been sent to help the family, as her cousins are either too unwilling or too young to help their mother. Uncle Tobias is the Chief Coast Guard and he and his menpatrol the inlet of Firlingham. This is the first time Sarah has seen the sea, and she begins to suspect her uncle may be in league with smugglers or, perhaps, even worse. He warns her that the chalk cliffs of Firlingham are beautiful yet dangerous, and the slightest slip could prove fatal... It is Benjamin, the young Caribbean sailor, who fought alongside Lord Nelson at Trafalgar, who helps her to deliver an important message to the Admiralty but then, at the last moment, it seems that all of their hard work will be for nothing. Will she be in time to save England?

In the year there was in North Carolina, west of Broad River, and near the site of what is now known as Rutherfordton, a settlement called Gilbert Town. Within five or six miles of this village on a certain September day in the year above mentioned, two lads, equipped for a hunting trip, had halted in the woods. One was Nathan Shelby, a boy sixteen years of age, and nephew of that Isaac Shelby whose name is so prominent in the early history of North Carolina; the other, Evan McDowells, son of Colonel Charles McDowells, was one year younger than Nathan. But for the fact that these two lads were sorely needed at their homes, both would have been enrolled either among the American forces, or with those hardy pioneers who were then known as Mountain Men, for the time was come when the struggling colonists required every arm that could raise a musket. On the previous month the American forces under General Gates had been defeated by Cornwallis at Camden. Tarleton had dispersed Sumter's forces at Rocky Mount, and the southern colonists appeared to have been entirely subdued by the royal troops.

She was totally in her element as she did her very best to ease the pain caused by the appalling injuries of the wounded Allied soldiers, but with a heavy heart she knew that the day - a normal Friday in September 1916 - would be just like any other day, with dreadful sights of men walking in, (or be delivered by ambulance) often dreadfully injured, totally exhausted and mentally shattered. Those who were too severely injured to walk made up the regular stream to be delivered by ambulance. A number of the injured young men would have such terrible injuries that they were beyond the wildest possibility of recovery, and clearly stood no chance of survival. Indeed, many of the new soldiers were found to be dead on arrival. Yet each and every single one would bring tears to Sarah's eyes.
