Dairy farmer George Calvert is fighting to keep the family business afloat. Worried about the future but resistant to change, he refuses to face the reality of his failing farm, his elderly mother's declining health and his troubled relationship with his youngest son, Tom. Newly returned from university, Tom isolates himself in his childhood bedroom, guarding the truth of his burgeoning identity. When animal rights activists break into the cowshed one morning and Tom appears to side with the protesters, father and son lock horns. As the Calverts begin to unravel, a decades-old secret surfaces - one that might rip them apart completely, or finally unite them. A deeply moving debut about one family's struggle to find connection in a rapidly changing world, Human, Animal is an ode to the wild, a journey of self-discovery and a hopeful path to common ground.

Ceramic Exchange and the Indian Ocean Economy (AD 400-1275). Volume I: Analysis
‘In this groundbreaking book, Seth Priestman proposes a very rigorous methodology together with a strong critical sense and meets the reader’s expectations. The book fills a gap in the archaeology of the Indian Ocean that is severely lacking quantitative analysis of the available data.’ - International Journal of Nautical ArchaeologyFrom AD 500-1000, the Indian Ocean emerged as a global commercial centre, and by around 750-800 a sophisticated trade network had been established involving the movement of goods from Japan and China in the east, to southern Africa and Spain in the west. However, the Indian Ocean's commercial system has been relatively understudied, with many of the key assumptions regarding its development based on narrative textual sources and selective archaeological evidence. This study sets out the case for the unique significance of quantified ceramic finds as an indicator of long-term changes in the scale and volume of maritime exchange in a period for which few other sources of systematic economic history survive. The publication presents archaeological data from thirteen sites distributed across the western Indian Ocean, including Siraf (Iran), Anuradhapura (Sri Lanka) and Manda (Kenya). The ceramic assemblages are considered in terms of their general compositional characteristics and the distinctions between local, regional and long-distance exchange. The volume concludes with a discussion of how this data can be used to address the broader issues of long-term economic change and the relationship between state power in the Middle East and the commercial networks of the Indian Ocean operating via the Persian Gulf.

An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes and Earth Structures is an introduction to seismology and its role in the earth sciences, and is written for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students. The fundamentals of seismic wave propagation are developed using a physical approach and then applied to show how refraction, reflection, and teleseismic techniques are used to study the structure and thus the composition and evolution of the earth. The book shows how seismic waves are used to study earthquakes and are integrated with other data to investigate the plate tectonic processes that cause earthquakes. Figures, examples, problems, and computer exercises teach students about seismology in a creative and intuitive manner. Necessary mathematical tools including vector and tensor analysis, matrix algebra, Fourier analysis, statistics of errors, signal processing, and data inversion are introduced with many relevant examples. The text also addresses the fundamentals of seismometry and applications of seismology to societal issues. Special attention is paid to help students visualize connections between different topics and view seismology as an integrated science. An Introduction to Seismology, Earthquakes, and Earth Structure gives an excellent overview for students of geophysics and tectonics, and provides a strong foundation for further studies in seismology. Multidisciplinary examples throughout the text - catering to students in varied disciplines (geology, mineralogy, petrology, physics, etc.).Most up to date book on the market - includes recent seismic events such as the 1999 Earthquakes in Turkey, Greece, and Taiwan).Chapter outlines - each chapter begins with an outline and a list of learning objectives to help students focus and study.Essential math review - an entire section reviews the essential math needed to understand seismology. This can be covered in class or left to students to review as needed.End of chapter problem sets - homework problems that cover the material presented in the chapter. Solutions to all odd numbered problem sets are listed in the back so that students can track their progress.Extensive References - classic references and more current references are listed at the end of each chapter. A set of instructor's resources containing downloadable versions of all the figures in the book, errata and answers to homework problems is available at: http://levee.wustl.edu/seismology/book/. Also available on this website are PowerPoint lecture slides corresponding to the first 5 chapters of the book.

By captivating millions during his six-year, fifty-country tenure as the New York Times’s “Frugal Traveler,” Seth Kugel has become one of our most internationally beloved travel writers. While his famously unassuming journeys around the globe have forged a signature philosophy of whimsy and practicality, they have also revealed the seemingly infinite booby traps of on-the-grid tourism. In a book with widespread cultural reverberations, Kugel takes the modern travel industry to task, determined to reignite humanity’s age-old sense of adventure that has virtually been vanquished by the spontaneity-obliterating likes of Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and Starwood points. Woven throughout with vivid tales of his perfectly imperfect adventures, Rediscovering Travel explains—often hilariously—how to make the most of new digital technologies without being shackled to them. For the tight-belted tourist and the first-class flyer, the eager student and the comfort-seeking retiree, Kugel shows how we too can rediscover the joy of discovery.

Recently deceased lawyer and all-around schlemiel Simon Ackerman suddenly finds himself desperate to get into Hell, which, God forbid, turns out to be the better place to both visit and spend eternity. Struggling against the demons before him as well as the demons within, Simon encounters other proud denizens of Hell, including William Shakespeare, Frank Sinatra, Vlad the Impaler, and a chic, fashionable Mother Theresa, among others. At the end of his journey, Simon finds himself face to face with the most timeless conundrum of all - what do you do when you are finally being held accountable for your actions on Earth, being held accountable to a completely different set of standards, and most importantly, where do you truly wish to end up when you leave it? "... simultaneously nutty and witty ... with a philosophical message that never gets in the way of the laughs ... it's impossible not to like a show whose opening number includes Hitler and Einstein joining voices in the Arlen-Koehler standard 'Let's Fall in Love.' The cast, with several members playing multiple roles, strikes a likable note of matter-of-fact absurdity." -Anita Gates, The New York Times "Panitch's screwball metaphysical comedy has an undeniable huckster charm, as well as crackling performances and a handful of wickedly funny punch lines." -Mitch Montgomery, BackStage "Think of George Bernard Shaw's DON JUAN IN HELL starring Sid Caesar ... With its heart in the kind of smart, irreverent sketch comedy Steve Allen used to do, and its head in a struggle for the soul of a good man, HELL is a bona fide entertainment with ideas ... Panitch has a graceful touch reminiscent of Marivaux." -The Los Angeles Times

Wisdom, Inc.: 30 Business Virtues That Turn Ordinary People Into Extraordinary Leaders
A look at the 30 virtues of good business that have inspired success in thousands of leaders, by the man voted Boss of the Year, 1994. Persistent, honest, resourceful, creative -- these adjectives begin to define the qualities of a great business leader. Along with the 26 other virtues enumerated in Wisdom, Inc., they are the fundamentals behind a business strategy that works, but they often get lost beneath passing fads and the color of one's parachute. Seth Godin's simple, highly readable handbook of business virtues will help everyone from assistant managers to CEOs cultivate habits that lead to a lifetime of good business. Godin interviewed 1,500 top executives from a wide range of industries to isolate the 30 virtues consistently named by respondents. Each virtue is addressed with inspirational stories of historical business leaders who distinguished themselves by exhibiting that virtue, as well as modern-day accounts by the executives interviewed demonstrating how the virtue has contributed to their companies' successes. Most important, each virtue is accompanied by a section entitled "To Do Today," which provides concrete suggestions for immediately incorporating the virtue into a daily routine. Both practical and inspirational, Wisdom, Inc. is a perfect gift or anyone in business.
Texts from the Late Old Babylonian Period

Texts from the Late Old Babylonian Period

Seth F. C. Richardson

American Schools of Oriental Research
2011
sidottu
Illustrated with 177 b/w plates. This volume publishes and discusses 186 cuneiform documents from the Late Old Babylonian period (1683-1595 B.C.), including 95 hand copies, mostly from Sippar texts in British Museum collections. The Late O.B. epoch marks the last of five centuries of uninterrupted textual production in lower Mesopotamia. This selection of texts focuses mostly on less well-known text types of the time, reflecting innovations in documentary practices - some isolated to the period, others precursive to the Kassite period. In extensive notes, the reader will find discussions of provisioning systems, chronology, terminologies, land redistribution and ritual and military economies, in addition to the expected apparatus of indexes, concordances and catalogues.
The Legal and Economic Aspects of Gray Market Goods
The first comprehensive work on the subject, this volume covers all the legal and economic issues raised by gray market goods--genuine trademarked goods manufactured with the authority of the trademark owner but imported without that entity's permission. Seth Lipner analyzes in detail the relevant judicial decisions, administrative actions, and legislation and provides a thorough discussion of the trademark law, copyright, antitrust, customs practice, and fraud issues involved in the importation of gray market goods. Designed to help both the legal and business communities understand and evaluate gray market situations, the book is written with a minimum of legal jargon and contains a supplement of relevant statutes and governmental regulations. The author also provides realistic projections about the future viability of gray market goods.Following an introductory chapter that explores the business and economics of the gray market, Professor Lipner reviews a number of early gray market cases. Subsequent chapters address specific issues raised by gray market activities and litigation. The chapter on trademarks includes in-depth discussion of such topics as proving local goodwill, injury and the gray market, and the single international enterprise disqualification. Turning to antitrust issues, Professor Lipner covers the history of vertical restraints, antitrust law and the gray market, and specific cases. The succeeding chapters examine, in turn, customs service policies vis-a-vis gray market goods, the question of title, and copyright law and the gray market. The final section examines the effects of state laws, the International Trade Commission, and how the laws of foreign countries affect gray market trade in the United States. Discussion of cases is included throughout to illustrate points made in the text. Attorneys involved in international trade practice as well as importers, trademark owners, and licensees will find this book an indispensable guide to the business and litigation of controversies over gray market goods.
Codependency in the Workplace

Codependency in the Workplace

Seth Allcorn

Praeger Publishers Inc
1992
sidottu
Codependency is an important psychological aspect of the workplace that adversely affects both those who experience codependency and those who are the subject of the codependent's compelling agenda of interpersonal control. In this important book, Seth Allcorn explores codependency in the workplace beginning with its origins in the family. Many new insights are provided about the characteristic self-defeating and paradoxical patterns of thinking, feeling, and action that also impoverish those who work with the codependent. The author develops important new theoretical perspectives and models of codependency by drawing upon psychoanalytic theory. The three faces of codependency are described for the first time and a sophisticated psychodynamic model of the psychological gridlock of codependency explains the codependent's self-defeating and interpersonally destructive agenda of control. Allcorn concludes his book with ideas about how managers can deal more effectively with the presence of codependency in their organization. The author begins by defining codependency and uses a model to explain how it arises in pathological families of origin. He then describes three faces of codependency and relates them to fourteen common behavior attributes and the workplace. Allcorn explores how this disorder manifests itself in different genders and situations, outlines a learning model and a Family Pathology Matrix, and shows how different pairings of parental behavior contribute to the development of the three faces of codependency. The difficulties which codependency introduces into the workplace is a primary focus, and the book concludes with a search for solutions within the organizational culture that may alleviate the need for codependent defenses and lead to one-on-one interventions at work. This book will be of interest to employee assistance staff, training personnel, counselors and therapists, consultants, and students of the psychodynamics of organizational life.
Workplace Superstars in Resistant Organizations

Workplace Superstars in Resistant Organizations

Seth Allcorn

Praeger Publishers Inc
1991

Despite our national preoccupation with achievement, little attention seems to be paid to the pursuit of excellence on an individual basis. For while it's easy to talk about the collective excellence of an organization, Seth Allcorn argues, no one really wants to be threatened by the superior individual performance of another. In this work, Allcorn examines the paradox of human nature that places individuals of distinction in the position of being rejected and ostracized by their peers. He explores the psychological underpinnings of this phenomenon and suggests ways of revising organizational culture to foster individual excellence.Focusing on the psychological aspects of people and the workplace, Allcorn divides his study into three sections. The first offers an introduction to the search for excellence and discusses the identification of workplace superstars. Also examined are the organizational trends that inhibit individual achievement, the interaction between the superstars and others, and the psychology of office behavior. Section two details the different types of superstars found in organizations and their approaches to achieving excellence. Finally, section three explores some possibilities for adapting current organizational structures to allow and encourage greater pursuit of personal excellence. With its basis in the author's practical experience in middle management, this volume will be a valuable resource for students and professionals in human resource management as well as the management and business fields.
