GoodReads Top 200 Best 21st Century Nonfiction, 2021. Pulitzer Prize in History nominee, 2018. Ranked Second on Amazon Bestseller list, Presidents category, March 2017. Historians place the assassination of John F. Kennedy among the biggest watershed events of the 20th century. While numerous books cover the 1963 tragedy from a conspiracy or lone-assassin viewpoint, this work by veteran journalist Kevin James Shay focuses on presenting what occurred between Kennedy's 1960 presidential triumph and his assassination in an objective manner. The narrative, infused with behind-the-scenes details that have been brought to light in recent years, provides a compelling account that is particularly geared towards the average reader, not the assassination researcher. Shay witnessed Kennedy's funeral in Washington, D.C., as a boy and grew up in Dallas. He has researched the killing off and on since 1978, when eyewitness Bill Newman entered his college newspaper office and led him on a search. While Shay leans about lean 75 percent toward the conspiracy side, he is almost 100 percent certain that Oswald was involved in some way. Whether he was a patsy, government informant, or actually fired his rifle at Kennedy remains up in the air. Even some lone-assassin believers admit that the evidence against Oswald back then was circumstantial enough that a good lawyer would have gotten an acquittal. There are many questions about the evidence, cover-up by LBJ and the Warren Commission, the people who saw Ruby and Oswald together, the threats in Chicago, Florida, and other places, and more, that make the conspiracy side more believable. Shay unearths some information not highlighted much before, such as other assassination attempts on Kennedy's life and the involvement of Willie Somersett. The Klan leader opposed the racial violence in the 1950s and 1960s to the point that he risked his life exposing and helping to prevent it as a government informant. He likely helped save and prolong Kennedy's life at least once.

The author is a direct descendent of the adventurous Baron Jean-Vincent d'Abbadie de Saint-Castin (immortalized by Longfellow) and Pidianiske, daughter of Penobscot Chief Madockawando. Feted as a veteran of the liberation of Europe, Charles Shay unexpectedly finds himself in the footsteps of his French ancestry, being received in Basque villages, in the region of Castine (184 illustrations). "Charles Norman Shay is a Penobscot Indian elder at Indian Island, Maine. Born in 1924, he enjoyed his childhood years living on this small island in the Penobscot River, opposite Old Town. He is the grandson of the author of The Life and Traditions of the Red Man (1893), Joseph Nicolar, and proud of his heritage. Reviewing his own long life, he decided to share his personal story as a result of a pilgrimage he made to Omaha Beach in 2007, more than sixty years after he waded ashore as a nineteen-year-old combat medic in a 1st Division assault platoon in the first wave of D-Day. He has received much recognition for his contribution to the war effort, including the Legion of Honor from the French president. In this memoir, the author offers us a window into his personal life so full of unexpected twists and turns that took him across the globe." -Dr. Harald E.L. Eva A Remarkably Wonderful Girl Was The result of an evil plan. My name is Tim O'Bannon. I was a detective on the NYCPD. I was shot and killed. I was dead for 32 minutes. As they wheeled me to the morgue, I woke up. Since they didn't know what to do with a dead cop, I was retired. I opened a PI business, "Unusual Investigations." My first case fit the name, it was Extremely Unusual. I was hired by Jackson Fairbanks, President of Fairbanks Holding. The Fairbanks family owned the largest container shipping company in the country and 120 other related businesses. He hired me to determine if a 15-year-old girl was who she claimed to be. This is what Eva told me. "My mother was kidnapped in 1982, she was twelve years old. Six years later, she was forced to marry a man she didn't know. I was born ten months later, in 1989. We lived on a large ranch in Montana. We were treated well and allowed to go to church. They threatened to kill Mom's parents if we ran. I was very well educated by my mother and one of her kidnappers. When I was 15, I could speak 5 languages and do calculous. My mother planned our escape for 15 years. We split up. She sent me to l the Franciscan Family Center in Idaho, two months later to New York. To deliver this letter to Mom's Uncle. I don't know where Mom is." I took the case, found her mother, found the kidnappers. But that's not story. The story is watching the next ten years of Eva's remarkable life.

Shay looks at the crucial yet unheralded role played by support troops in World War I, in particular those in the medical branch. The unarmed men of the 103rd Field Hospital Company, 26th (Yankee) Division spent a year and a half in France performing their duty bravely under arduous conditions. The experiences of the men of the 103rd Field Hospital were undoubtedly shared by any member of a frontline field hospital. Based on nearly four years of research, including original archival material, he fills an important gap in the military history of World War I. A Grateful Heart is a detailed account of the 103rd Field Hospital Company, 26th (Yankee) Division in World War I. All aspects of the company are examined. The book is more than a chronological narrative and it places the unit in the context of the larger role of the 26th Division. It features original maps and passenger lists showing the members of the unit who sailed to France in 1917 and who returned in 1919.

This manuscript provides a blueprint for people conducting focus groups. The examples are highly useful and in combination with the book give people the information they need to actually run a focus group. . . . Chapter nine is uniquely useful for educators who frequently work with children and teachers in school settings. The concrete examples will be extremely helpful to focus group moderators. . . . The book will be useful for reference and for courses in survey research. I will recommend the book for both purposes. --Kathy Green, University of Denver "This book does a nice job of providing readers with the specific steps necessary to conduct focus groups. If a person had never heard of a 'focus group interview' before reading this book, they would have an excellent comprehension of the history, specific methods, and pitfalls of using the focus group interview methodology." --Thomas M. Archer, The Ohio State University Why use focus groups in educational and psychological research? The focus group interview is a research tool that holds great promise for application in educational and psychological research. Focus groups offer an effective way to obtain knowledge about what key stakeholders think and feel resulting in information that yields better surveys, evaluations, and research studies. Although there are numerous books and articles that address focus groups, most are directed at business and marketing. Focus Group Interviews in Education and Psychology shows the specific steps to take to conduct focus groups in educational and psychological settings. Through the use of numerous examples, the authors show readers how to prepare for a focus group, create a moderator's guide, select a setting, and analyze the results gleaned from focus groups. In addition, they devote an entire chapter to doing focus groups with adolescents and children. Each chapter contains numerous procedural tables as well as end-of-chapter applications for performing "trial runs" of the techniques discussed. Qualitative and quantitative researchers and students in education and psychology will find this book a useful guide for refining their research instruments and for opening new vistas to understanding their subjects' responses. Focus Group Interviews in Education and Psychology is an invaluable tool that is beneficial to researchers and professionals in research methods/evaluation, psychology, education, and social work.

“Don’t fire until you see the whites of their eyes” remains one of the enduring, and most stirring, quotations of the Revolutionary War, and it was very likely uttered at the Battle of Bunker Hill by General Israel Putnam. Despite this, and Putnam’s renown as a battlefield commander and his colorful military service far and wide, Putnam has never received his due from modern historians. In The Whites of Their Eyes, Michael Shay tells the exciting life of Israel Putnam.Born near Salem, Massachusetts, in 1718, Putnam relocated in 1740 to northeastern Connecticut, where he was a slaveowner and, according to folk legend, killed Connecticut’s last wolf, in a cave known as Israel Putnam Wolf Den, which is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. During the French and Indian War, Putnam enlisted as a private and rose to the rank of colonel. He served with Robert Rogers, famous Ranger founder and leader, and a popular phrase of the time said, “Rogers always sent, but Putnam led his men to action.” In 1759, Putnam led an assault on French Fort Carillon (later Ticonderoga); in 1760, he marched against Montreal; in 1762, he survived a shipwreck and yellow fever during an expedition against Cuba; and in 1763, he was sent to defend Detroit during Pontiac’s rebellion. When the Revolutionary War broke out, Putnam—who had been radicalized by the Stamp Act—was among those immediately considered for high command. Named one of the Continental Army’s first four major generals, he helped plan and lead at the Battle of Bunker Hill, where he gave the order about “the whites of their eyes” and argued in favor of fortifying Breed’s Hill, in addition to Bunker Hill. Most of the battle would take place on Breed’s. During the battles for Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Long Island during the summer of 1776, Putnam proved himself a capable and courageous battlefield commander with a special eye for fortifications, but he sometimes faltered in tactical and strategic decision-making. In the fall of 1777, the British tricked Putnam into withdrawing from the Hudson Highlands near West Point. Relieved of command, Putnam was exonerated by a court of inquiry, but—nearly sixty and opposed by powerful political elements from New York, including Alexander Hamilton—he spent the rest of the war on non-battlefield duty in Connecticut before being paralyzed by a stroke in 1779.The Whites of Their Eyes recounts the life and times of Israel Putnam, a larger-than-life general, a gregarious tavern keeper and farmer, who was a folk hero in Connecticut and the probable source of legendary words during the Revolutionary War—and whose exploits make him one of the most interesting officers in American military history.

In August 1917, the U.S. 26th “Yankee” Division was formally activated for service in World War I. When the soldiers arrived in France, they were accompanied by more than three dozen volunteer chaplains. These clergymen experienced all the horrors of war, shared all the privations of the common soldier, and earned the love and affection of their “boys.” Two died, several were gassed or wounded, and many were decorated by France and the United States for their heroism, yet their stories have been lost to history. Through extensive research in published and archival sources, as well as firsthand materials obtained from the families of several chaplains, Michael E. Shay brings to life the story of these valiant men - a story of courage in the face of the horrors of war and of extreme devotion to the men they served.Just as important, Sky Pilots follows the chaplains home and on to their subsequent careers. For many, their war experiences shaped their ministries, particularly in the area of ecumenism and the Social Gospel. Others left the ministry altogether. To fill in the chaplains’ stories, Shay also examines the evolution of the U.S. Army Chaplain Corps, the education of the newly appointed chaplains, and the birth of the Yankee Division. This exploration of the noncombatants who earned the love and respect of the doughboys should appeal to armchair historians and scholars alike. Enhanced with photographs and an appendix summarising the biographical information for each man, Sky Pilots is the first comprehensive look at the role of the Army chaplaincy at the divisional level.
