Haunted by the Civil War

Haunted by the Civil War

How the legacy of the Civil War—as presented by writers, poets, and artists of the time—has shaped American visions of democracyIn Haunted by the Civil War, Shirley Samuels explores the work of Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Herman Melville, Frederick Douglass, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and others to investigate the long cultural shadow of America’s cataclysmic sundering. Juxtaposing these texts with images—ranging from paintings by Winslow Homer to newspaper and magazine illustrations of political controversies—Samuels argues that the Civil War still haunts our attitudes toward democracy. The recent toppling of Confederate monuments, the continuing protests over racial and sexual discrimination, immigration, and Indigenous land rights: each of these forms part of the war’s legacy.Examining the fraught deliberations about an ideal American democracy in the early republic, Samuels turns to the language of sensation in the poetry of Melville, Dickinson, and Whitman alongside Lincoln’s relation to the poetic and visual culture of his time. She considers the haunted afterlives of war in the work of Louisa May Alcott and Harriet Beecher Stowe as well as in popular nineteenth-century inspirational fiction. And she investigates the literature of men at sea (and on rivers, enabling both connection and escape), as seen in Melville and Mark Twain, while examining women’s wartime work and experience, in writings by Gilman and Frances Harper. Why does the Civil War still haunt us? To find the answer, Samuels identifies not only the ghosts that cannot rest but also the cultural practices that name them.

"How Your Senses control Your Mind," is a simplistic concept on what you can do to control what is stored in your mind, and how you can control what happens to you through proper use. How you use your senses is how you perceive the world around you. It introduces you to your senses and gives you information on how to use them properly to store positive reactions in your mind. The more positive reactions you have to your senses, the more you have the ability to fight depression, anxiety and even guard against Alzheimer's. When you have proper use of your senses you'll have more positive reactions stored in your mind, that will repeat itself each time your senses are used in a positive way. This book has nothing to do with abusive situations and things you have no control over and it does not detour you from getting professional help when necessary. The mind when compared to a computer is your hard drive. How you use, respond and even react to your senses is stored in that hard drive and will resurface in many repetitive ways. When you have a positive response stored in your mind, it will resurface, giving you a more secure and positive outlook on life. If you have many negative reactions to your senses and they are stored in your mind, when they resurface, your outlook on life will be more emotional. Living your life through your emotions will cause an emotional overload that will shut down your senses, which in turn will shut down your mind. Shirley suffered with depression and anxiety for seven years and the solutions she describes in her book are, what she claims, God showed her. Through His guidance she has overcome depression and anxiety and her mind is clear from emotional overloud. "How Your Senses Control Your Mind," is a simple guide to how to use your senses as God intended and shows you how to let The Holy Spirit guide your life.

From Dunbar to Destiny: One Woman's Journey Through Desegregation and Beyond
This book chronicles the life of a black woman who was raised in Tucson, Arizona during the 1940's and early 1950's when public schools, public accommodations, as well as most other public entities, were racially segregated. The story tells how, during her developmental years, Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary and Junior High School's leader and its teachers prepared young Shirley Robinson for the many academic challenges and social obstacles that she would confront and overcome throughout her life. The role of integration at a critical stage in her schooling is vividly recalled by the author in her descriptions of key people who played significant roles in helping her to establish goals and pathways to a successful life. It is through these recollections and others that she weaves a tale of courage and indomitable spirit that carried her through a journey of difficult personal and professional trials to reach the station in life that she now enjoys.
