The Bloomsbury Companion to Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kubrick is one of the most revered directors in cinema history. His 13 films, including classics such as Paths of Glory, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, and The Shining, attracted controversy, acclaim, a devoted cult following, and enormous critical interest. Bringing together an international team of leading scholars and emergent voices, this Companion provides comprehensive coverage of Stanley Kubrick’s contribution to cinema. After a substantial introduction outlining Kubrick's life and career and the film's production and reception contexts, the volume consists of 39 contributions on key themes that both summarise previous work and offer new, often archive-based, state-of-the-art research. In addition, it is specifically tailored to the needs of students wanting an authoritative, accessible overview of academic work on Kubrick.

In Movies with Stanley Cavell in Mind, some of the scholars who have become essential for our understanding of Stanley Cavell’s writing on film gather to use his landmark contributions to help us read new films—from Hollywood and elsewhere—that exist beyond his immediate reach and reading. In extending the scope of Cavell’s film philosophy, we naturally find ourselves contending with it and amending it, as the case may be. Through a series of interpretive vignettes, the group effort situates, for the expert and novitiate alike, how Cavell’s writing on film can profitably enrich one’s experience of cinema generally and also inform how we might continue the practice of serious philosophical criticism of specific films mindful of his sensibility. The resulting conversations between texts, traditions, disciplines, genres, and generations creates propitious conditions for discovering what it means to watch and listen to movies with Stanley Cavell in mind.
The Thought of Stanley Cavell and Cinema
Stanley Cavell was, by many accounts, America's greatest philosophical thinker of film. Like Bazin in France and Perkins in England, Cavell did not just transform the American capacity to take film as a subject for philosophical criticism; he had to first invent that legitimacy. Part of that effort involved the creation of several key now-canonical texts in film studies, among them the seminal The World Viewed along with Pursuits of Happiness and Contesting Tears. The present collection offers, for the first time anywhere, a concerted effort mounted by some of today's most compelling writers on film to take careful account of Cavell's legacy. The contributors think anew about what precisely Cavell contributed, what holds up, what is in need to revision or updating, and how his writing continues to be of vital significance and relevance for any contemporary approach to the philosophy of film.

If the trials of childhood form the adult, then Stanley Newberry is growing into a grotesquely misshapen lump of a thing. All the popular people tell him so. Since he first met his classmates in grade school, Fat Stanley has singly borne the brunt of their endless insults, taunts and abuses. Passing from eighth grade to their first year in high school, purple-nurples and Indian-burns have long since given way to chocolate-swirlies and blackened eyes, but Fat Stanley has grown wiser and warier, too.Bastard twins born of terror and torment, fear and cynicism render him increasingly aware of their malicious overtures. Each year, his tormentors must develop evermore elaborate pretexts to draw the fat kid out of his shell, but each summer also returns him to their academic fold, fatter, uglier and weirder than the season gone before. When eventual bouts of suburban boredom inevitably turn their heads, Fat Stanley will always be his classmates' most fascinating social obsession and their greatest sadistic challenge. This school year, his dedicated torturers have fabricated their most elaborate ruse to date. Epic in its scope and intended effects, Fat Stanley's detractors will relentlessly promote and prosecute their malign project through the course of the fall, and then long into winter. Each progressively humiliating and destructive prank will build to the next until the entire community ultimately reels from its bloody climax. Fat Stanley will not survive it and in the aftermath a guilty few will envy the dead.

He again tops the crowd--he surpasses himself, the old iron brought to the white heat of simplicity."" That's what Robert Lowell said of the poetry of Stanley Kunitz (1905-2006) and his evolving artistry. The interviews and conversations contained in this volume derive from four decades of Kunitz's distinguished career. They touch on aesthetic motifs in his poetry, the roots of his work, his friendships in the sister arts of painting and sculpture, his interactions with Lowell and Theodore Roethke, and his comments on a host of poets: John Keats, Walt Whitman, Randall Jarrell, Wallace Stevens, and Anna Akhmatova.Kunitz emerged from a mid-sized industrial town in central Massachusetts, surviving family tragedy and a sense of personal isolation and loneliness, to become an eloquent spokesman for poetry and for the power of the human imagination. Kunitz has commented, ""If we want to know what it felt like to be alive at any given moment in the long odyssey of the race, it is to poetry we must turn."" His own odyssey from ""metaphysical loneliness"" to a sense of community with fellow writers and artists--by building institutions like Poets House and the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts--is ever present in these interviews.
