Leading People into a Better Future through Information System Interaction and Engagement
Climate change has become one of the most significant challenges humanity faces. As greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, not only will natural disasters strike considerably more frequently and severely, but whole swaths of land will become uninhabitable and infertile as farmland. It is apparent that long-term approaches like reaching net-zero with new technologies are important, but so are short-term measures to avoid tipping points and passing points of no return. The transport sector accounts for nearly a quarter (23%) of energy related-emissions, and 40-60% of these transport-related emissions stem from commuting and business traveling. One short-term approach to lower transport emissions is ridesharing: When two or more commuters team up, significant emissions can be saved. As a result, business trip ridesharing (BTRS), the sharing of individual vehicles for commuting and business trips among employees, has gained increased attention from organizations and academia alike. BTRS shares similar adoption challenges like ridesharing and shared-mobility overall: From individuals' prevalence to solving the matching and allocation problem of shared resources. This thesis investigates the role that Green Information Systems (Green IS) can play to support BTRS adoption.
Sloshing of Cryogenic Liquids in a Cylindrical Tank under normal Gravity Conditions
Particularly in the upper stage development of rockets (launchers), gravity dominated fluid motion in upper stage tanks (sloshing) during flight represents an undesired dynamic effect. On the one hand the sloshing forces lead to disturbances, which have to be compensated by the reaction control system. On the other hand, when cryogenic fluids are considered, the fluctuations in tank pressure may be critical under some circumstances compromising the structural stability of the tank. In this field, the utilization of cryogenic propellants represents a high challenge to layout and design of the propulsion components including the propellant tanks. This work deals with two effects that are directly coupled to the sloshing content inside the propellant tank. To investigate these effects a dedicated test setup has been developed. At first, the damping characteristics of sloshing cryogenic nitrogen - which is used as a substitute for the rocket propellants liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen - are determined. The results are correlated to the theory based on storable propellants. The main part of this work is linked to a characteristic pressure drop inside the propellant tank caused by the sloshing liquid. For the effect to occur, the tank must be pressurized to enable the formation of a thermal stratification below the liquid surface. Sloshing leads to the mixing of liquid in this region with subcooled liquid from the bulk. This affects the decrease of the temperature at the free surface leading to the condensation of superheated vapor. Thus, the pressure in the tank must decreases. Three different pressurization concepts are introduced in this work; self-pressurization where the tank is pressurized by evaporating liquid caused by the heat flowing into the tank. Furthermore, the tank is pressurized with gaseous nitrogen taken from an external gas bottle and at last gaseous helium from an external supply is used for pressurization purpose. By the application of helium as no

Mark and Patrik meet in Warsaw and spend the night together. Both are mature and married, fully aware that their relationship is impossible. While their minds understand the consequences, their hearts ignore the warnings. Mark is a successful, high-ranking manager at an international company in Poland. He grew up in a communist country that later transformed into a fundamentalist religious state, where hundreds of communities identify as "gay-free zones." Mark is vulnerable and cautious, keeping his sexual preferences a secret. On the other hand, Patrik is a retired professor who has been married to a man for over fifty years. He is openly gay and lives in a non-homophobic country. This love story is inspired by real-life events and historical contexts that shape their experiences. Their explicit lovemaking is authentic, filled with emotion, romance, and power. The narrative offers a glimpse into the past and present, illustrating how societal norms and cultures have historically posed barriers to same-sex love. It highlights the courage and resilience of individuals who dare to love against the odds.As they contemplate the possibility of living openly as a couple, both agree on their goal to remove the barriers that stand in their way. They find themselves still determining their life together, what the future will hold, and whether they will succeed.
Leading with Obeya: Using a Big Room to Lead Successful Strategies
In 2014 when Tim Wiegel was introduced to the concept of Obeya, pieces of a puzzle started falling into place. The Obeya (Japanese for 'big room') is a physical space where visual management is used to align operational teams and leadership in their efforts to translate strategy into meaningful day-to-day work and results. Toyota started using Obeya during the development of the Prius in the 90's. Both the car itself and the way it was developed were a huge success from a project management perspective. A growing number of companies and teams are learning about the advantages of working with Obeya in industry, consumer goods, IT, finance, telcom, healthcare, government and ngo's.Using Obeya not just for a project, but to lead the organization itself is the answer to a much needed alignment between leadership and operational teams. It helps develop the ability to have meetings that create meaningful context and avoid distractions such as bias, ego and over-complexity. When used throughout the organization, it supports the development of a systematic approach to leadership that enables consistent, coherent and effective decision-making. In search for cause-and-effect under the umbrella of a committed purpose and clarity on strategic direction, the systems-thinking approach of Leading With Obeya helps teams move from fire-fighting to improving the performance of their organizational system sustainably.Working with Obeya is a way to maximize your human leadership potential.Leading With Obeya is the first comprehensive book about how to do it right. Tim Wiegel is a dedicated Obeya coach who has witnessed firsthand the breakthrough changes within teams when strategy leads to meaningful action and performance. He aims to drive development of community knowledge of Obeya with the Obeya Knowledge Network, involvement in the Obeya Association and regular blogposts at ObeyaCoaching.com

George Washington and Alexandria: A Founding Friendship
George Washington and Alexandria recounts and celebrates the life, legacy, and leadership of the city's hometown hero and the father of the nation. No other city in America had the impact that Alexandria had on George Washington's personal life and professional career. From his first job as surveyor until the last day of his life, Washington was supported by his neighbors, friends, and family from Alexandria. Alexandrians helped make him the father of our nation. In return, Washington helped shape the city and, by extension, the new American nation. Washington's half brothers were the first landowners and trustees to the city of Alexandria, and prominent local families like the Fairfaxes were influential in Washington's life. Alexandria merchants, John Carlyle, John Dalton, and William Ramsay, did business with Washington and supported him during the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War. During the Revolutionary War, other citizens like John Fitzgerald and Robert Harrison served as his aides de camp, and doctors like James Craik and William Brown served Washington and his family. After the war, Washington helped start the Alexandria Academy and the Potomac Company, and he was a shareholder in the Bank of Alexandria. He was an active member in Alexandria's Christ Church. While Washington's home was Mount Vernon, his hometown was Alexandria. It was fitting that the city would celebrate his return from the Revolutionary War, see him off as president, and build enduring memorials to his legacy.
In Pursuit of Unicorns: A Journey Through 50 Years of Biotechnology, Updated Edition
Modern biotechnology-genetic engineering and cell manipulation-originated with the 1973 demonstration that genes from different organisms could be recombined and propagated in Escherichia coli. More than 50 years on, biotech is now a science that defines the 21st century. While still a young scientist, Tim Harris committed himself to this emerging industry. Now an accomplished investigator who became an astute, seasoned, and successful biotech business executive, he has written a captivating memoir chronicling the birth and maturation of the industry that now touches everyone's lives. He combines accounts of scientific successes and failures with a personal story of ambition, challenge, and discovery. From the pioneering early days of gene cloning and monoclonal antibodies to the current cutting-edge advancements in cell therapy, gene editing, and personalized medicine, Harris provides a candidly honest insider's view of biotech's remarkable evolution and its profound impact on health care. His story is rich in detail about the accomplishments, struggles, and triumphs played out in the laboratories and boardrooms of the many different companies set up to exploit the technology, and the often colourful personalities involved. It is a fascinating blend of science, business, and ethics. Harris's reflections on the complexities that come with rapid technological progress, and the responsibilities of scientists in shaping the future, are thought-provoking and timely. Tim Harris's story is one of passion, resilience, and an unwavering commitment from those involved to making a difference. His book is a compelling read for working scientists (especially early- and mid-career academic and industry researchers wondering how to apply their research to human health), biotechnology entrepreneurs and investors, and anyone fascinated by how profoundly biotechnology has changed our world and where it is leading us in the future.
The power of storytelling - a critical theory-based analysis
Whether in films, books, advertising or strategic brand management, stories are omnipresent and give the material world an emotional component that offers consumers orientation and a welcome distraction from the flood of information due to ever-increasing advertising penetration. This paper serves as a critical analysis of the possible applications, success criteria and future prospects for successful storytelling in relation to strategic brand management in companies. The thesis deliberately excludes other strategic aspects and possible applications of storytelling, such as support in management processes or long-term employee loyalty to the company, in order to make the most of the limited space available in a master's thesis by analysing the relevant scientific models and limiting the scope to relevant cases in the field of strategic marketing management.
The Pied Piper & The King's Ding-A-Ling
The Pied Piper & The King's Ding-A-Ling is Tim Cashmore's magical chucklefest of a pantomime. This traditional pantomime-style script is a reworking of the familiar tale of the Pied Piper, mixed with contemporary references including Brexit and Donald Trump. There is a huge ding-dong where someone fails to make true on a promise. From then, the plot is stuffed with magic beans, a love potion, revenge, a medical complaint, betrayal, an ever-ringing bell and peals of laughter. The characters include a rude king, an overworked town crier, a crotchety queen, a downtrodden princess and a poor piper. This being panto, all the good characters get what they deserve and all the baddies get what's coming to them too - with bells on Perfect for friends to read and perform, but equally amusing to read by yourself and laugh at the antics of the hilarious characters.

Frost on My Moustache: The Arctic Exploits of a Lord and a Loafer
Guided by the fastidious journals of an eminent Victorian adventurer by the name of Lord Dufferin, Time Moore sets off to prove his mettle in the most stunningly inhospitable place on Earth-the Arctic. Armed only with his searing wit, wicked humor, and seasickness pills, our pale suburbanite-wracked by second thoughts of tactical retreat-confronts mind-numbing cold, blood-thirsty polar bears, a convoy of born-again Vikings, and, perhaps most chilling of all, herring porridge. When he is not humiliating himself through displays of ignorance and incompetence, Moore casts a sharp eye on the local flora and fauna, immersing readers in the splendors and wonders of this treacherously beautiful region. A deliciously and inexhaustibly funny book, Frost on My Moustache deserves to be placed alongside those by Evelyn Waugh, Eric Newby, and Bill Bryson.
The Brendan Voyage: Sailing to America in a Leather Boat to Prove the Legend of the Irish Sailor Saints
Could an Irish monk in the sixth century really have sailed all the way across the Atlantic in a small open boat, thus beating Columbus to the New World by almost a thousand years? Relying on the medieval text of St. Brendan, award-winning adventure writer Tim Severin painstakingly researched and built a boat identical to the leather curragh that carried Brendan on his epic voyage. He found a centuries-old, family-run tannery to prepare the ox hides in the medieval way; he undertook an exhaustive search for skilled harness makers (the only people who would know how to stitch the three-quarter-inch-thick hides together); he located one of the last pieces of Irish-grown timber tall enough to make the mainmast. But his courage and resourcefulness were truly tested on the open seas, including one heart-pounding episode when he and his crew repaired a dangerous tear in the leather hull by hanging over the side--their heads sometimes submerged under the freezing waves--to restitch the leather. A modern classic in the tradition of Kon-Tiki, The Brendan Voyage seamlessly blends high adventure and historical relevance. It has been translated into twenty-seven languages since its original publication in 1978. With a new Introduction by Malachy McCourt, author of A Monk Swimming
