Critical Curriculum Studies
A CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title 2012!Critical Curriculum Studies offers a novel framework for thinking about how curriculum relates to students’ understanding of the world around them. Wayne Au brings together curriculum theory, critical educational studies, and feminist standpoint theory with practical examples of teaching for social justice to argue for a transformative curriculum that challenges existing inequity in social, educational, and economic relations. Making use of the work of important scholars such as Freire, Vygotsky, Hartsock, Harding, and others, Critical Curriculum Studies, argues that we must understand the relationship between the curriculum and the types of consciousness we carry out into the world.
Gender, Race, and the Politics of Role Modelling

Gender, Race, and the Politics of Role Modelling

Wayne Martino; Goli Rezai-Rashti

Routledge
2011
sidottu
This book provides an illuminating account of teachers’ own reflections on their experiences of teaching in urban schools. It was conceived as a direct response to policy-related and media-generated concerns about male teacher shortage and offers a critique of the call for more male role models in elementary schools to address important issues regarding gender, race and the politics of representation. By including the perspectives of minority teachers and students, and by drawing on feminist, queer and anti-racist frameworks, this book rejects the familiar tendency to resort to role modelling as a basis for explaining or addressing boys’ disaffection with schooling. Indeed, the authors argue, on the basis of their research in urban schools in Canada and Australia, that educational policy concerned with male teacher shortage and the plight of disadvantaged minority boys would benefit from engaging with analytic perspectives and empirical literature that takes readers beyond hegemonic discourses of role modelling. A compelling case is presented for the need to disarticulate discourses about role modelling from a politics of representation that is committed to addressing the reality of the impact of racial and structural inequalities on both minority teachers and students’ participation in the education system. The book also provides insight into the persistence of gender inequality as it relates to the status of elementary school teaching as women’s work.

Healing, Intention and Energy Medicine

Healing, Intention and Energy Medicine

Wayne B. Jonas; Cindy Crawford

Churchill Livingstone
2003
nidottu
This book provides a clear and authoritative summary of the results and clinical implications of research in spiritual healing, energy medicine and the effects of intentionality. Recent publications in the Archives of Internal Medicine, the Western Journal of Medicine, JAMA and the Annals of Internal Medicine have focused on prayer, distant healing and spiritual healing. Therapeutic touch is taught in many nursing schools and laying-on-of-hands and mental healing are of great interest to the public. But what is the science behind these practices? Is there any research? Is it any good? What are the implications of this research for medicine and science? How should investigation of spiritual healing proceed, if at all? These are the questions this book explores. This book derives from a project sponsored by the Lawrence S. Rockefeller for the purpose of rigorously evaluating the science of spiritual healing. To produce the book, some of the best researchers in these areas were asked to use a standard set of quality criteria for the evaluation of science and clinical research. A conference of scientists, physicians, ministers and others then reviewed and discussed this literature and addressed methods for their further evaluation. The conference was organised by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Duke University, Wake Forest University and the Institute of Noetic Sciences. The evidence level of these areas was rated using standards established by government groups and published in JAMA for classification of the amount and quality of evidence in medicine. Each area was summarised, and clinical implications identified. Recommendations for future research and investigating the impact of healing practices in the clinical setting were also made. Provides the most authoritative discussion of the science of healing intention and energy medicine. Offers a clear analysis and assessment of research results and their relative quality. Explores the clinical implications for research results and demonstrates how they may be applied in practice. Provides guidelines for further research and study on the subject.

Having finished his first year of college, Felix Fist sets off to complete his year of wandering: Leaving a dreary room in a derelict building on Anaheim in Long Beach on the border of the ghetto, Felix hitches rides to Oregon, works for the first and only time helping harvest grain, then takes to the road again traveling back to his place of origins where he encounters friends he thought he knew. His trip back through purple mountains, painted desert, and grasslands followed by a layover with a weird woman whose mystic manner and insatiable libido prompt him to stay, he experiences a long night walk to a small Midwest town and a troubling assault he accepts with a tinge of perverse pleasure. Finally arrived at his grandmother's on Milwaukee's Southside, Felix hears of family "misunderstandings" as well as news of people whom he had known before he left: Meeting with a former high school friend whom he had admired, he reunites with a woman he had met in high school whom he had considered his first love now married with children. After reconnecting with Fat Jack, the urban cowboy, Felix considers a former lover, he reunites with a married woman with whom he had a courtly "affair" that unrequited had prompted him to leave when offered the chance to attend college in California. Then at a dinner with estranged family celebrating his return at which he tries to resolve family "misunderstandings," he reconsiders why he thought he had returned safely home.

It is the fundamental book on the subject, and statisticians will benefit from adding this book to their collection or to university or departmental libraries." -Biometrics "Given the large and diverse literature on measurement error/errors-in-variables problems, Fuller's book is most welcome. Anyone with an interest in the subject should certainly have this book." -Journal of the American Statistical Association "The author is to be commended for providing a complete presentation of a very important topic. Statisticians working with measurement error problems will benefit from adding this book to their collection." -Technometrics " . . . this book is a remarkable achievement and the product of impressive top-grade scholarly work." -Journal of Applied Econometrics Measurement Error Models offers coverage of estimation for situations where the model variables are observed subject to measurement error. Regression models are included with errors in the variables, latent variable models, and factor models. Results from several areas of application are discussed, including recent results for nonlinear models and for models with unequal variances. The estimation of true values for the fixed model, prediction of true values under the random model, model checks, and the analysis of residuals are addressed, and in addition, procedures are illustrated with data drawn from nearly twenty real data sets.

2009
sidottu
Discover the latest developments and current practices in survey sampling Survey sampling is an important component of research in many fields, and as the importance of survey sampling continues to grow, sophisticated sampling techniques that are both economical and scientifically reliable are essential to planning statistical research and the design of experiments. Sampling Statistics presents estimation techniques and sampling concepts to facilitate the application of model-based procedures to survey samples. The book begins with an introduction to standard probability sampling concepts, which provides the foundation for studying samples selected from a finite population. The development of the theory of complex sampling methods is detailed, and subsequent chapters explore the construction of estimators, sample design, replication variance estimation, and procedures such as nonresponse adjustment and small area estimation where models play a key role. A final chapter covers analytic studies in which survey data are used for the estimation of parameters for a subject matter model. The author draws upon his extensive experience with survey samples in the book's numerous examples. Both the production of "general use" databases and the analytic study of a limited number of characteristics are discussed. Exercises at the end of each chapter allow readers to test their comprehension of the presented concepts and techniques, and the references provide further resources for study. Sampling Statistics is an ideal book for courses in survey sampling at the graduate level. It is also a valuable reference for practicing statisticians who analyze survey data or are involved in the design of sample surveys.
