Wilson invokes her own Black biracial identity in her mixed-media pieces, inspired by art historical traditions as much as the plants outside her door This first major monograph features nearly two decades of work by American artist Paula Wilson (born 1975), who frequently intermixes her identity as a Black biracial artist, living in a rural desert town in New Mexico, with narratives and motifs across time and place. Toward the Sky’s Back Door documents her wide-ranging career with essays by leading scholars Taylor Renee Aldridge, Ebony Y. Rhodes and Stephanie Sparling Williams, and a new interview with the artist. Wilson embraces a both/and approach to art and living, using the same techniques, materials and motifs to make rugs and clothing as she does for art on the gallery wall. Throughout her work, little to nothing is discarded, with scraps from one artwork recycled into another, reflecting both a practice of eco-sustainability and a model for creating something new from fragments left behind. This volume presents paintings, sculpture, prints, collages and videos, with different mediums frequently intermixed in a single work, ranging in scale from small paper-mosaic work to beyond-life-size female figures. This book was published in conjunction with Tang Museum

An “assiduously researched” (The Wall Street Journal), “powerful...dispassionate new biography” (The Christian Science Monitor) of Woodrow Wilson, focused on his role in the long national struggle for racial equality and women’s voting rights.More than a century after his death, Woodrow Wilson’s influence on American politics remains strong while his contradictions loom larger than ever. With panoramic sweep, Woodrow Wilson: The Light Withdrawn examines his life and times, focusing especially on the 28th president’s opposition to the movements for racial equality and women’s voting rights. The Wilson who emerges is a man superbly unsuited to the moment when, as he ascended to the presidency in 1912, the struggle for women’s voting rights in America reached the tipping point. The first southern Democrat to occupy the White House since the Civil War era brought with him to Washington like-minded men who quickly set to work segregating the federal government. Wilson’s own sympathy for Jim Crow and states’ rights animated his decades-long hostility to the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, which promised universal suffrage backed by federal enforcement. Women demonstrating for voting rights found themselves demonized in government propaganda, beaten and starved while illegally imprisoned, and even confined to the insane asylum. When, in the twilight of his second term, two-thirds of Congress stood on the threshold of passing the Anthony Amendment, Wilson abruptly switched his position. But in sympathy with like-minded southern Democrats, he endorsed a plan to rewrite the Anthony Amendment to protect Jim Crow restrictions on the voting rights of Black women. The heroes responsible for the eventual success of the unadulterated Anthony Amendment are brought to life by Christopher Cox, an author steeped in the ways of Washington and political power. This is a “Pulitzer Prize–worthy history” (The Washington Examiner) that puts you at the center of one of the greatest advances in the history of American democracy.
Woodrow Wilson's Wars

Woodrow Wilson's Wars

Woodrow Wilson's presidential administration (1913-1921) was marked not only by America's participation in World War I, but also by numerous armed interventions by the United States in other countries. Spanning the globe, these actions included the years-long occupations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, a border war with Mexico, and the use of Marines guarding American citizens during unrest in Chinese cities. Author Mark Benbow examines what these American policy decisions and military adventures reveal of Wilson as commander-in-chief, and the powers and duties of the office. Wilson tended to let his cabinet officials operate their own departments as they wished as long as their actions did not contradict his overall policies. However, as regards foreign policy, Wilson took an active role overseeing American diplomats. His policy toward the military followed a similar pattern, though sometimes military commanders' actions. affected Wilson's diplomatic goals. Benbow focuses on those conflicts between military reality, the pragmatic needs of policy, and the larger goals of crafting a lasting foreign policy.

It has been said, "Nothing happens by accident in politics." It could also be said that no dystopian novel happens by accident either: an author summons the real shadowy or partially hidden political forces, and the imagination gives it life.Wen Wilson is such a tale. It is the story of a writer/ activist who is caught up in America's transition from a democratic republic to a totalitarian regime. Wen Wilson is a known agitator because of his writings. The powers-that-be do not understand how he knows what he knows; they have actively suppressed his writings and banned the publication of future books. They attempt to silence him. They hound him, driving him from city to city, so he finds no rest. He stops at Dan-U Farms.
