One of the more relevant - if not the most relevant - mathematical logicians of the 20th century, who was able to prove a theorem that, in the opinion of the ma- jority, states the failure of human knowledge even within mathematics (after Kant had definitively destroyed any epistemological and metaphysical realism, being followed by almost all the later thinkers), claims that mathematics proper, and then science based on it, needs to be founded on something which is absolutely true, objective and evident It seems that only ideological blindness may prevent perceiving such a situa- tion, and consequently engaging ourselves with a serious work about the problem of foundations. One may reasonably start from the foundational claims of contem- porary sciences and compare them with the results of the great syntheses of Greek and Mediaeval logic and metaphysics, which, historically allowed the development of modern sciences. The present book, would represent a small initial attempt in such direction. Translated from italian - Original title: Il problema dei fondamenti. Un'avventurosa navigazione dagli insiemi agli enti passando per G del e Tommaso d'Aquino, Cantagalli, Siena (I) 2009
This textbook is addressed to graduate students in mathematics or other disciplines who wish to understand the essential concepts of functional analysis and their applications to partial differential equations. The book is intentionally concise, presenting all the fundamental concepts and results but omitting the more specialized topics. Enough of the theory of Sobolev spaces and semigroups of linear operators is included as needed to develop significant applications to elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic PDEs. Throughout the book, care has been taken to explain the connections between theorems in functional analysis and familiar results of finite-dimensional linear algebra. The main concepts and ideas used in the proofs are illustrated with a large number of figures. A rich collection of homework problems is included at the end of most chapters. The book is suitable as a text for a one-semester graduate course.

This book argues that narrations of rhetorical performances in late antique literature can be interpreted as a reflection of the ongoing debates of the time. Competition among cultural elites, strategies of self-presentation and the making of religious orthodoxy often took the shape of narrations of rhetorical performances in which comments on the display of oratorical skills also incorporated moral and ethical judgments about the performer. Using texts from late antique authors (in particular, Themistius, Synesius of Cyrene, and Libanius of Antioch), this book proposes that this type of narrative should be understood as a valuable way to decipher the cultural and religious landscape of the fourth century AD. The volume pays particular attention to narrations of deficient rhetorical deliveries, arguing that the accounts of flaws and mistakes in oratorical displays and rhetorical performances reveal how late antique literature echoed the concerns of the time. Criticisms of deficient deliveries in different speaking occasions (declamations, public speeches, oratorical agones, school exercises, sermons) were often disguised as accusations of practising magic, heresy or cultural apostasy. A close reading of the sources shows that these oratorical deficiencies hid struggles over religious, cultural and political issues.
Studying the careers of popular actors Amedeo Nazzari and Alberto Sordi, Acting Across Borders explores the question of how Italian cinema from the 1930s to 1980s has considered human mobility. Through close readings of a selection of films, Alberto Zambenedetti examines the concept of italianit (Italian-ness) as manifested in contexts related to migration, diaspora, exile, tourism, travel and their supporting infrastructures. In this wide-ranging study, the methodologies of Film Studies and the Mobilities Framework are combined to illuminate an undertheorised yet vital tradition in the history of the national cinema.

This book explores the history of Muslim-Christian theological exchanges in Iran during the 17th and early 18th centuries. Focused on the work of the renegade missionary 'Ali Quli Jadid al-Islam (d. 1734), it contributes to ongoing debates on the nature of confessionalism, interreligious encounters, and cultural translation in early modern Muslim empires. By disentangling the connections between polemics and other forms of Islamic learning and by emphasizing the Shi'i character of the case in question, this study accounts for the dynamism of polemics as an ever-evolving genre capable to adapt to different historical contexts.

I began my spiritual awakening after my flying accident in May of 1997. By "awakening" I refer to the awareness of what is within and all around us, an awareness of past events, which occurred in my life, even as early as when I was about 5 years old. It is precisely for this reason that I have included parts of my whole life in this book, to underscore the extent to which our whole lives and events are well orchestrated for a magnificent purpose. Not manipulated as puppets on a string, but collected lovingly by large caring hands that scoop up the broken fragments and weave them together as threads in a tapestry. Or like a potter who re-works the clay, using every portion of it to re-mold it into a shape of His design. But this only occurs once the potter has been allowed to model the dough, when we turn ourselves in for service. Little did I realize along the way that my calling would be a religious one. Along I went in my merry life, as many of us do, not knowing specifically what my future might bring and lacking His curious piercing foresight, I never realized the impact of what was actually happening today, let alone some of the fabulous purposes that could be wrought from the events of yesterday. As I went through my prior life, (by the way, I will use this term from now on in the book to describe my life "prior" to the flying accident) I went along growing up with all of our typical earthly accomplishment needs. The childhood accomplishments, teenage, and even adult needs, as we perceive them to be diligently and respectively accomplished. From the basic needs to the social psychological needs of even surpassing the "Jones's". No pun intended but most people can't handle merely keeping up with the Jones's but are actually taught to top them in the higher education levels of our training. I, like some "fortunate" individuals, had succeeded in attaining my Masters Degree of International Business Administration at one of the most highly acclaimed Graduate Schools of this country. Miami University, located in the international hub of the United States, was noted as being one of the best Graduate Schools in the International Business arena. In addition to all the above mentioned drives and ambitions, I also had another need, a need to attain high levels of adrenalin in my blood for short periods of times during the month. Yes at least once a month but preferably once a week I went through my entire life searching for a constant supply and ever increasing potency of adrenalin. I went from dirt bike riding as a kid to flat tracking as a teenager. From scuba diving with sharks over 19 feet long to sky diving in college after a drunken bet the night before, this was not enough What always intrigued me was the art of flying and boy was it an art. Stunt flying was my favorite source of adrenalin and an artistic one at that, maybe not a Rembrandt but most certainly a well worked Picasso, from the gentle curves to the rash Lomshavocks, a work of art indeed As I was saying in the beginning of this Preface, I began my spiritual awakening after my flying accident in May of 1997. Awakening is the awareness of what is within and all around us; awareness of some very real and fantastic things that started to happen, an awareness of past, and now present events, which occurred in my life. I have had an exciting life, no doubt, as shown in part during my descriptions in chapter 3, "Growing Years Of Adventure".
