Parasitic Phenomena in the Dynamics of Industrial Devices

Parasitic Phenomena in the Dynamics of Industrial Devices

Alberto Borboni; Rodolfo Faglia

CRC Press Inc

In the real world the dynamic behavior of a real machine presents either unforeseen or limiting phenomena: both are undesired, and can be therefore be classified as parasitic phenomena — unwanted, unforeseen, or limiting behaviors. Parasitic Phenomena in the Dynamics of Industrial Devices describes the potential causes and effects of these behaviors and provides indications that could minimize their influence on the mechanical system in question. The authors introduce the phenomena and explore them through real cases, avoiding academic introductions, but inserting the entire academic and experimental knowledge that is useful to understand and solve real-world problems. They then examine these parasitic phenomena in the machine dynamics, using two cases that cover the classical cultural division between cam devices and mechanisms. They also present concrete cases with an amount of experimental data higher than the proposed ones and with a modern approach that can be applied to various mechanical devices, acquiring real knowledge superior to one of the mere finite element systems or collections of mechanical devices. Organizes machine dynamics through systems theory to give a comprehensive vision of the design problem Details machine dynamics at an advanced mathematics level and avoids redundancy of fundamental knowledgeIntroduces real machine cases for solutions to practical problemsCovers two broad classes of mechanical devices that are widely used in the construction of instrumental goodsEmploys a mechatronic approach that can be applied to electro-mechanical, hydro-mechanical, or pneumo-mechanical machinesHighlighting industrial devices in the manufacturing industry, including industrial indexing devices and industrial robots, the book offers case studies, advanced models, design methods, and short examples of applications. It is of critical importance for any manufacturing enterprise that produces significant amounts of objects through a process with one or more automated phases.

This volume makes a compelling case for the continued relevance and significance of Herbert Spencer (1820-1904), one of the foremost intellectuals of the Victorian era whose work now tends to be regarded as being of purely historical interest. One of the originators of the evolutionary classical liberal or libertarian approach exemplified later by F. A. Hayek, Spencer engaged with such issues as the relationship between the individual and the state; the nature of majoritarian democracy; the legitimacy of private property; the consequences of the transition from relatively simple, feudal communities to complex, industrial societies; and the causes of war and the prospects of international peace. For him the future was individualist. However, as the scope of state action expanded and classical liberal ideas became increasingly marginalised during the course of his life, Spencer grew ever more pessimistic about the future prospects for liberty.

Modern electronics depend on nanoscaled technologies that present new challenges in terms of testing and diagnostics. Memories are particularly prone to defects since they exploit the technology limits to get the highest density. This book is an invaluable guide to the testing and diagnostics of the latest generation of SRAM, one of the most widely applied types of memory. Classical methods for testing memory are designed to handle the so-called "static faults," but these test solutions are not sufficient for faults that are emerging in the latest Very Deep Sub-Micron (VDSM) technologies. These new fault models, referred to as "dynamic faults", are not covered by classical test solutions and require the dedicated test sequences presented in this book.

Oil Economics and Policy

Oil Economics and Policy

In 20th century society, oil has played a fundamental role not only from the economic point of view, but also from the point of view of the political relationships established between major Western countries and oil-producing countries. A survey into oil history, its market dynamics and price evolution, is essential for a deeper understanding of modern industry and world economy, as world development depends on oil supplies, prices, and its political accessibility. Oil Economics and Policy follows the historical development of the oil industry, and inevitably also covers many aspects of energy resource economy. In so doing, it pays particular attention to one aspect, namely, the fixing of oil prices. This is mainly in order to attempt to understand whether, and by how much, the structural transformations that the oil industry has undergone during the various phases of its existence - and the various market structures deriving from them - have influenced the dynamics of oil prices. Alberto Clô is Professor of Industrial Economics at the University of Bologna. Minister of Industry and Trade during Lamberto Dini's government (January 1995-May 1996), he has been a member both of national and international scientific boards and of ministerial committees. He is author of numerous writings on industrial and energy economies and editor-in-chief of the journal Energia.

1.1 General Framework In most arid and semi-arid countries, water resource management is an issue that is both important and controversial. Most water resources experts now acknowledge that water conflicts are not caused by physical scarcity but are mainly due to poor water management (Rosegrant et al. 2002; Benoit and Comeau 2005; Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture 2007; Garrido and Dinar 2010, among others). The scientific and technological advances of the past 50 years have led to new ways to solve many water-related conflicts, often with tools that seemed unthinkable a few decades ago (Llamas 2005; Lopez-Gunn and Llamas 2008). This study deals with the estimation and analysis of Spain’s water footprint, both from a hydrological and economic perspective. Its ultimate objective is to report on the allocative efficiency of water and economic resources. This analysis can provide a transparent and multidisciplinary framework for informing and optimising water policy decisions, contributing at the same time to the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC). It also responds to the current mandate of the Spanish Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, which recently issued instructions for drafting river basin management plans in compliance with the EU Water Framework Directive, with a deadline of end of year 2009 and then every 6 years (BOE 2008).

Plant control systems are subject to the undesirable influence of exogenous commands and disturbances. To track and reject these the authors have designed a feedback control system based on embedding a model of them within the controller itself - the "internal model". From a review of the principles of internal-model-based feedback control design, this book moves on to expound recent enhancements to such designs and then to their implementation in systems operating under conditions of great uncertainty. The case studies presented involve control systems coping with a high degree of nonlinear behaviour. The key issues addressed in each are the design of an adaptive internal model for the specific tracking task and of stabilizing control capable of steering the tracking error to zero while keeping all internal states bounded for any arbitrarily large but bounded envelope of initial data and uncertain parameters. Nested saturated controls form the basis of novel tools for asymptotic analysis and design.

The purpose of this book is to present a self-contained and coordinated de scription of several design methods for nonlinear control systems, with special emphasis on the problem of achieving stability, globally or on arbitrarily large domains, in the presence of model uncertainties. The book is intended to be a continuation of my earlier book Nonlinear Control Systems, dealing with the fundamentals of the theory of nonlinear control systems, whose third edition was published in 1995. In this respect, it is written in the form of a "second volume" of a single work, and uses a numbering system that continues the one adopted in the earlier book, with which the overlap is essentially insignificant. The book is intended as a graduate text as well as a reference to scientists and engineers interested in the design of feedback laws for nonlinear control systems. In the last decade, methods for global stabilization of nonlinear systems have experienced a vigorous growth.

Through the results of a developed case study of information system for low temperature geothermal energy, GIS to Support Cost-effective Decisions on Renewable Sources addresses the issue of the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in evaluating cost-effectiveness of renewable resource exploitation on a regional scale. Focusing on the design of a Decision Support System, a process is presented aimed to transform geographic data into knowledge useful for analysis and decision-making on the economic exploitation of geothermal energy. This detailed description includes a literature review and technical issues related to data collection, data mining, decision analysis for the informative system developed for the case study. A multi-disciplinary approach to GIS design is presented which is also an innovative example of fusion of georeferenced data acquired from multiple sources including remote sensing, networks of sensors and socio-economic censuses. GIS to Support Cost-effective Decisions on Renewable Sources is a useful, practical reference for engineers, managers and researchers involved in the design of GIS, decision support systems, investment planning/strategy in renewable energy and ICT innovation in this field.
Active Control of Flexible Structures

Active Control of Flexible Structures

A complete solution for problems of vibration control in structures that may be subject to a broadband primary vibration field, this book addresses the following steps: experimental identification of the dynamic model of the structure; optimal placement of sensors and actuators; formulation of control constraints in terms of controller frequency response shape; controller design and simulation; and controller implementation and rapid prototyping. The identification procedure is a gray-box approach tailored to the estimation of modal parameters of large-scale flexible structures. The actuator/sensor placement algorithm maximizes a modal controllability index improving the effectiveness of the control. Considering limitations of sensors and actuators, the controller is chosen as a stable, band-pass MIMO system resulting from the closed-form solution of a robust control problem. Experimental results on an aeronautical stiffened skin panel are presented using rapid-prototyping hardware.
