Plain Meetinghouses

Plain Meetinghouses

Beth Oberholtzer

Old Order Mennonites are deeply faithful, agrarian-rooted, Swiss-German Anabaptists who have called Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, home for 300 years. Their meetinghouses silently embody their religious traditions, and yet few outsiders have seen the startling utilitarian beauty of these rural structures up close. The author and photographer were allowed rare access to 22 austere houses of worship. The result is a one-of-a-kind book featuring over 300 photos and diagrams that document all aspects of the meetinghouses, from the design of their benches and buggy sheds to the arrangement of tables central to worship. As fast-growing Lancaster County encroaches on the Old Order way of life, their communities are changing. This book is a record of an extraordinary religious heritage.

Every day in Lancaster County, thousands of Plain-sect farm families hitch up draft horses to work their fields, and carriage horses to take them from place to place. These animals are foundational to a faith community that bans automobiles and tractors in a desire to live simple, agrarian-based lives. Stories and interviews accompany over 240 candid photos depicting the most common horses at work and play in Lancaster County—from foals frolicking at their mother's side to six Belgians hitched abreast to harrow a field. The book features six draft horse breeds and five carriage horse breeds—Belgian, Percheron, Mule, Suffolk, Spotted Draft, Haflinger, Standardbred, Morgan, American Saddlebred, Dutch Harness, and Friesian. The photos and stories show how they are trained and cared for, offering profound insight into the emotional connection that Plain people have with their horses.

Sometimes people walk into our lives. Sometimes they fly in upon a dragon's wing. This is the love story of an unlikely pair, a raven and a dragon, with their own lives and their own goals, who are drawn back to each other time and again. Through the ups and downs experienced by any pair from very different worlds, their story proves that any creature--anyone--can move through rough times to achieve life goals and to love both themselves and others. This fantastical deck of 78 cards beautifully illustrates how awareness of both the light and dark components of the self and how they affect our life can empower one to make a plan to improve and to grow. Follow Ravyness and Drakon through their Tarot journey, as they reflect and give that gentle, supportive nudge to one another to become their higher selves. The context and story line easily connect to the human experience, encouraging growth within relationships as well as personal growth. Inspired by the creator's work as a teacher and her part in a nationwide movement to show high school students how to make healthy choices for their future.
Amish Gardens of Lancaster County

Amish Gardens of Lancaster County

A rare, intimate tour of more than 18 Amish vegetable gardens celebrates their eclectic mix of the utilitarian and decorative. Kitchen gardens are a long-standing Amish tradition, characterized by their eclectic mix of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and colorful flowers. Planned by the women of the household, they are used not only to feed their families but as an artistic outlet. This book explores the family gardens as a portrait of the women who design, tend, and harvest them. Color photographs of more than 18 gardens capture their trademark mix of orderliness and ornamentation: marigolds tucked among the melons, cockscombs with the cabbage, and a whimsically painted chair, iron gate, or old balustrade. Included are 32 family recipes straight from the garden: hot-pepper jam, fried green tomatoes, sweet dill pickles, sauerkraut for a crowd, corn fritters, and creamed celery. Like the resourceful women who tend them, each garden has its own personality and beauty.

Thinking Planning and Urbanism

Thinking Planning and Urbanism

When manufacturers and retailers vacate traditional locations, they leave holes in a city's fabric that signal a shifting urban-industrial terrain. Who should mend these spaces, and how should they approach the problem?Using Toronto's Dundas Square and surrounding area as a case study, Thinking Planning and Urbanism meticulously reconstructs the redevelopment process to explore the theories and practices used. It traces the labyrinth of competing interests that can sideline and nearly overwhelm the public planning function. In these circumstances, Moore Milroy concludes, practising planners are marooned by planning theories that begin from the premise that urban space is a social construction and only secondarily a function of technology and aesthetics. This book makes plain the nature of the gap between the practice of planning and its theories, a gap that inhibits planners from effectively championing creative actions to deal with postindustrial problems. The findings drawn from this case will be widely recognized in redevelopment elsewhere and thus will be extremely useful to students and practitioners of urban design, public administration, municipal law, and urban and regional planning.

Science of the Seance

Science of the Seance

Beth A. Robertson

University of British Columbia Press

In the 1920s and '30s, people gathered in darkened rooms to explore the paranormal through seances. They were motivated by grief, spiritual devotion, or a desire to be entertained. Beth A. Robertson resurrects the story of a small transnational group and their quest for objective knowledge of the supernatural, casting new light on how science, metaphysics, and the senses collided to inform gendered norms in this era.Robertson draws back the curtain to reveal a world inhabited by researchers, spirits, and spiritual mediums. Representing themselves as masters of the senses, untainted by the effeminized subjectivity of the body, psychical researchers in Canada, the UK, and the US believed that they could use machines and empirical methods to transform the seance into a laboratory of the spirits and a transnational empirical project. However, mediums and ghostly subjects could and did challenge their claims to scientific expertise and authority.
