Higher Education Policy in Developing and Western Nations
Recognizing that institutes of higher education function simultaneously in local and global contexts, this volume explores the applications of domestic and global policies in a range of industrialized nations in North America and Australia, and developing ones of Brazil, Indonesia, Myanmar, and in Southern Africa and the Caribbean The chapters focus on policies relating to global matters such as diversity, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) innovations, and development amid natural disasters and conflicts. In each case, authors consider how policies were envisioned, how they compare to the realities of implementation, and how far they have been successfully supported by the communities and translated into legislations and formal or informal programs. Based upon decades of research and executive positions by senior scholars and perspectives of emerging professionals, the volume concentrates on motifs that portray relationships among policies and comparative analysis that reveals the need for global collaborations. This important book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars, postgraduates, and government and philanthropic professionals in the fields of higher education, public and educational policy, comparative education, and international affairs.

The Literary Legacy of Child Sexual Abuse

The Literary Legacy of Child Sexual Abuse

This book examines the representation of child sexual abuse in five American novels written from 1850 to the present. The historical range of the novels shows that child sexual abuse is not a new problem, although it has been called by other names in other eras. The introduction explains what literature and literary criticism bring to persistent questions that arise when children are sexually abused. Psychoanalytic concepts developed by Freud, Ferenczi, Kohut, and Lacan inform readings of the novels. Theories of trauma, shame, psychosis, and perversion provide insights into the characters represented in the stories. Each chapter is guided by a difficult question that has arisen from real-life situations of child sexual abuse. These are previewed in the “Personal Preface” and “Introduction” and succinctly reviewed in the “Afterword” that weaves the chapters together. Legal and therapeutic interventions respond with their disciplinary resources to the questions as they concern victims, perpetrators, and witnesses. Literary criticism offers another analytic framework that can significantly inform those responses.

Life can be difficult, painful, and at times unpredictable. Whether we are stressed, overwhelmed by life, or faced with a life changing event, we can be left feeling lost, alone, fearful or unworthy. And yet, within these thoughts and feelings of despair there is a deeper knowing, that we are more and deserve more. When Beverly Creran had her life upheaved by divorce after a seemingly secure thirty years of marriage, she lost sight of who she was. She drifted with no real sense of purpose or direction to her life, until she decided to take matters into her own hands. Dedicating herself to her own well being, learning about self love, conscious awareness, spiritual healing, and meditation, she was able to move away from a victim mentality to reclaim her life on her own terms. And she wants you to know that no matter where you find yourself, you can do the same. This book will not change who you are. Instead, it will allow you to grow back into your true self, by better understanding the heart, mind, body and soul connection and it will ultimately lead you to discover that you truly are so much more than you think.
