Jonathan Edwards, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and the Supernatural Will in American Literature
Brad Bannon

In a work that will be of interest to students and scholars of American Literature, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, the History of Ideas, and Religious Studies, Brad Bannon examines Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s engagement with the philosophical theology of Jonathan Edwards. A closer look at Coleridge’s response to Edwards clarifies the important influence that both thinkers had on seminal works of the nineteenth century, ranging from the antebellum period to the aftermath of the American Civil War—from Poe’s fiction and Emerson’s essays to Melville’s Billy Budd and Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage. Similarly, Coleridge’s early espousal of an abolitionist theology that had evolved from Edwards and been shaped by John Woolman and Olaudah Equiano sheds light on the way that American Romantics later worked to affirm a philosophy of supernatural self-determination. Ultimately, what Coleridge offered the American Romantics was a supernatural modification of Edwards’ theological determinism, a compromise that provided Emerson and other nineteenth-century thinkers with an acceptable extension of an essentially Calvinist theology. Indeed, a thoroughgoing skepticism with respect to salvation, as well as a faith in the absolute inscrutability of Providence, led both the Transcendentalists and the Dark Romantics to speculate freely on the possibility of supernatural self-determination while doubting that anything other than God, or nature, could harness the power of causation.

The field of employee engagement has experienced unprecedented growth over the last three decades. Despite remarkable progress in both practice and scholarship, there remains tremendous confusion about what employee engagement is, what it means, and how organizations can take proactive steps to harness the full power of an engaged workforce. This short-form book provides readers a unique and research-based road map through the rapidly evolving research around employee engagement, including the identification of key literature and theory along with expert, timesaving connections to how theory has informed practice. The author covers the various disciplinary approaches and schools of thought, thematically bridging scholarly literature – including and identifying the historically significant and most current – to better understand how the research is evolving and what new opportunities for scholarship are emerging. Essential reading for scholars of human resource management, leadership and management more broadly, the book is also a valuable read for reflective practitioners globally.
This book addresses endemic issues of racism in news media at what is a critical moment in time, as journalists around the world speak out en masse against the prejudice and inequality in the industry. As the events of 2020 – the death of George Floyd, the rise in prominence of the Black Lives Matter movement – have drawn new and focused attention to inequality, white supremacy, and systemic racism, including in the media, this volume chronicles this racial reckoning, revisiting and examining the issues that it has raised. The author analyses media output by racialized and Indigenous journalists, identifying the racial make-up of newsrooms; the dominance of white perspectives in news coverage; interpretations of ethics downplaying systemic racism and bias; ignorance of racist history in editorial decisions and news content; and diversity and inclusion measures. The actions taken by news organizations in response to the reckoning are also detailed and placed in the context of existing race and media scholarship, to offer emerging strategies to address journalism’s longstanding issues with racism in news content and newsrooms. Grounding the interplay between news media and race within this pivotal moment in history, this text will be an important resource for students and scholars of journalism, journalism ethics, sociology, cultural studies, organizational studies, media and communication studies.

This accessible guide comprehensively addresses why psychotherapy of diverse forms often falters and provides effective strategies to succeed. Psychotherapy on occasion does not progress as both the client and therapist would like it to, and affecting deep-lasting change can be difficult and elusive. By addressing the spectrum of reasons for this occurrence inclusive of client, therapist, and interactive influences, barriers to psychotherapy progress can be managed, optimizing outcomes for the wellbeing of clients and success of psychotherapists. Given that the client, therapist, and interaction between both parties is integral to psychotherapy, coverage is provided in three sections: client influences, therapist influences, and interactive influences. Within each chapter, relevant literature is reviewed, key sources of the barrier to psychotherapy presented, and strategies for addressing the problem provided, with several case examples and vignettes. This book is essential for psychotherapists of all backgrounds, including students of psychotherapy.

With ever-increasing competitive pressures, the need to reduce the time-to-value (or time-to-bail) of a “big idea” – a new product, an organizational transformation, a healthcare initiative, or a humanitarian development project – has never been greater. Unfortunately, the current digital infrastructure for vision delivery teams is woefully inadequate. Improvement opportunities lie in replacing it with one that is designed to support teams working together in a unifying manner. The focus of this book is describing the Digital Office Complex and the accompanying digital teaming and governing capabilities needed to reengineer vision delivery.Digital Office Complex: Reengineering Vision Delivery by Transforming Teaming offers an in-depth understanding of the elements of “digital teaming and governing” and how they can be applied to vision delivery to accelerate and improve performance. The book identifies and describes the requirements for an integrated infrastructure to support: team goal management, teamwork coordination, team decision support, team “work product” support, and approval workflow capabilities in addition to “team-to-team” navigation, “team-to-team” coordination, and “team-to-team” data exchange. The aim for this book is to describe and illustrate “digital teaming and governing” practices using the Digital Office Complex to improve performance. The book goes on to a team-centric delivery method for initiatives and artificial intelligence capabilities to augment teamwork. The book concludes with critical success factors for implementation and an approach for reengineering vision delivery.Written for people who desire to implement the next level of high-performance teaming to improve organizational performance, this book is an ideal read for management consultants, executives, strategy managers, project managers, HR managers, team leaders, team members, and students in business and engineering programs.
