A Companion to Henslowe's Diary

A Companion to Henslowe's Diary

Neil Carson

Henslowe's 'diary' is a unique source of information about the day-to-day running of the Elizabethan repertory theatre. Philip Henslowe, a theatrical entrepreneur, kept records of his financial dealings with London companies and actors from 1592–1604. The diary itself is difficult to decipher. Neil Carson's analysis is based on a much more thorough correlation of Henslowe's entries than has been attempted before, breaking down into clear tabular form the main items of income and expenditure and drawing conclusions about the management procedures of the companies, the professional relationships of actors and playwrights and the ways in which plays were written, rehearsed and programmed. Previous speculation has dismissed Henslowe himself as ignorant, disorderly and grasping. Carson shows him to have been a benign and efficient businessman whose control over the actors' professional activities was much less extensive than has often been supposed.

The end of the Second World War opened a new era for science in public life. Heisenberg in the Atomic Age explores the transformations of science's public presence in the postwar Federal Republic of Germany. It shows how Heisenberg's philosophical commentaries, circulating in the mass media, secured his role as science's public philosopher, and it reflects on his policy engagements and public political stands, which helped redefine the relationship between science and the state. With deep archival grounding, the book tracks Heisenberg's interactions with intellectuals from Heidegger to Habermas and political leaders from Adenauer to Brandt. It also traces his evolving statements about his wartime research on nuclear fission for the National Socialist regime. Working between the history of science and German history, the book's central theme is the place of scientific rationality in public life - after the atomic bomb, in the wake of the Third Reich.

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to have a child labeled "genius"? Would that "genius" guarantee your child's introduction into the good life? Would their chances for success increase with every IQ point? If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, you may be surprised to find out that high IQ may not guarantee a walk down "Easy Street." Come with Kathy Carson as she relates her experiences of life with not one, but two remarkable children..."Traversing the educational minefield has left me bumped and bruised; my head's lumpy on one side from being beaten against the wall, and my hair has turned prematurely gray from the fray. The ultimate reward to our children for years of dedication and hard work should be top-quality educations for top-quality students, not life with Quasimodo." This story is true. Don't let this happen to you!

Talking about illness is not easy. Despite recent medical advancements, diagnosis of a serious illness still comes crashing into our world and turns our lives upside down. So we turn to each other for support. "Healthy" conversations can help reduce anxiety and increase levels of hope, but those types of conversations do not happen easily. We need to learn how to better say it like it is. A body of communication theory called "General Semantics" can help us better respond to these challenges. It offers us ways to choose our words wisely to better insure shared meaning, and it reminds us how the verbal "maps" we create and share with others affects the ways we think and behave. It's so easy for us to literally talk ourselves into negative feelings and overall despair. But it does not have to be that way. Discussion strategies housed within this book can help us better say what we mean, which, in turn, can help us face our illness challenges with less anxiety and renewed hope.
