The Public-Private Nature of Charity Law

The Public-Private Nature of Charity Law

Is charity law a 'private law' or a 'public law' subject? This book maps charity law’s relationship to the public law-private law divide, arguing that charity law is best understood as a hybrid (public-private) legal tradition that is constantly seeking to maintain an equilibrium between the protection of the autonomy of property-owning individuals to direct and control their wealth, and the furtherance of competing public visions of the good. Of interest to scholars and charity lawyers alike, The Public-Private Nature of Charity Law applies its unique lens both to traditional topics such as the public benefit rule and charity law’s rules of standing, and to more contemporary issues such as the co-optation of charitable resources by threatened welfare states and the emergence of social enterprise.'This book should be read by all who are interested in the respective domains of public and private law. Kathryn Chan brings new light to the divide and reveals the way in which both public and private law inform charity law. The book is subtle, original and rigorous, with an excellent grasp of primary and secondary material.'- Paul Craig, Professor of English Law at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of St John's College'An original and thought-provoking book which takes the somewhat unruly law of charities and, with great insight and clarity, helps it to find its place on the legal map.'- Mary Synge, Associate Professor in Law at the University of Exeter'Kathryn Chan’s impressive monograph breaks new ground in its analytical approach towards charity in the modern world. Her careful study helps us to understand how charitable enterprises partake of the values and concerns of both public and private law, and to evaluate the strength and weaknesses of different approaches to the governance of charitable enterprises.'- Lionel Smith, Sir William C Macdonald Professor of Law, McGill University

SEX. Splashed across magazine covers, billboards, and computer screens--sex is casual, aggressive, and absolutely everywhere. And everybody's doing it, right? In Real Sex, heralded young author Lauren F. Winner speaks candidly to Christians about the difficulty--and the importance--of sexual chastity. With honesty and wit, she talks about her struggle to live a celibate life. Never dodging tough terms like "confession" and "sin," Winner grounds her discussion of chastity first and foremost in Scripture. She confronts cultural lies about sex and challenges how we talk about sex in church. Her biblically grounded observations and suggestions will be especially valuable to unmarried Christians struggling with the sexual mania of today's culture. Real Sex is essential reading for Christians grappling with chastity and a valuable tool for pastors.

Diverse Yet United: Communicating Truth in Charity
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to dialogue and encounter. We are expected to be welcoming and open to all people, including those who think differently from us or who hold conflicting opinions. We are also called to share the Truth, which is God's love for us in Jesus Christ. " Jesus] asks us not to fix our gaze on what divides us, but rather on what unites us, seeking to know and love Jesus better and to share the richness of his love," Pope Francis writes in Diverse yet United: Communicating Truth in Charity. Jesus' love spurs us to dialogue, helping us to listen to one another and to get to know others. His love becomes the foundation of human solidarity and renders us capable of overcoming the barriers of our own weaknesses and prejudices. Jesus' love within us creates bridges, teaches new paths, and triggers the dynamism of fraternity. Pope Francis invites us to communicate the Lord's merciful love to the whole world: "We too are given the gift of the 'tongue' of the Gospel and the 'fire' of the Holy Spirit, so that as we proclaim the risen Jesus, alive and present among us, we may warm our hearts and the hearts of peoples, bringing them closer to him, the way, the truth, and the life."
Locked-In Love: How two weeks in chastity can end the barter system, renew courtship and make a better husband.
Author Key Barrett felt he didn't understand chastity well enough to be comfortable writing about the motivations and emotional aspects behind it in his fiction and nonfiction. So, he spoke with his wife, and together they agreed he should be 'locked up' for seven days to chronicle his feelings. She, in turn, agreed to hold the key (being his 'keyholder'), only unlocking him if he needed it for safety reasons, to make sure everything is working properly, or if she had sexual interest in freeing him. What started as a simple one week journal quickly blossomed into something else entirely. By the third day he was feeling butterflies just when his wife touched his hand. By day four, she noticed he was much more engaged in their household and being an active and proactive partner. What started as a week for him quickly became two weeks for them both to journal. Through chastity and communication, they identified a sexual trade-off that existed in their marriage, a 'barter system' wherein every action he engaged in had an undercurrent of sexual pressure, a literal tat-for-tit. Freed from it through a chastity device, they were able to enjoy each other on a more meaningful and trusting level. And in lowering the quantity of sex, they raised the quality. This book takes what they learned, plus surveys and research derived from male chastity users, and shows couples how they too can end the barter system, increase communication and bring back the courtship phase, butterflies and all. Learn what you can do to improve your marriage, increase intimacy, feel more connected emotionally, and make her daily life easier with a simple, sexy, fun exercise in chastity.
