Recent advances in polymer science have made it possible to relate quantitatively molecular structure to rheological behavior. At the same time, new methods of synthesis and characterization allow the preparation and structural verification of samples having a range of branched polymeric structures. This book unites this knowledge to enable production of polymers with prescribed processability and end-product properties. Methods of polymer synthesis and characterization are described, starting from fundamentals. The foundations of linear viscoelasticity are introduced, and then the linear behavior of entangled polymers is described in detail. This is followed by a discussion of the molecular modeling of linear behavior. Tube models for both linear and branched polymers are presented. The final two chapters deal with nonlinear rheological behavior and tube models to describe nonlinearity. In this second edition, each chapter has been significantly rewritten to account for recent advances in experimental methods and theoretical modeling. It includes new and updated material on developments in polymer synthesis and characterization, computational algorithms for linear and nonlinear rheology prediction, measurement of nonlinear viscoelasticity, entanglement detection algorithms in molecular dynamics, nonlinear constitutive equations, and instabilities.

The intentions of this manual are to familiarize beginners with the process of bone marrow evaluation, to provide a succinct preparatory review of bone marrow pathology for the pathology and clinical hematology board examinations, to remediate practitioners whose knowledge of this field is not current, and to strengthen the skills of clinicians who apply bone marrow data to the care of their patients but who do not independently examine bone marrow specimens. The opening chapter, Bone Marrow Basics, is a review of information that most readers will have originally encountered in medical school. Taking nothing for granted, this material is included for the purpose of closing any possible gaps in the reader’s knowledge of elementary concepts, whether from primary omission or forgetfulness. The next chapter is an overview of the principles and utilities of special studies used for the genotyping and immunophenotyping of BM. It is vital that the reader have a general understanding of these tests, since genetics and antigen expression have now equaled or surpassed the importance of morphology for bone marrow evaluation. The vast majority of this manual is devoted to hematologic neoplasms in the bone marrow and closely follows the World Health Organization classification scheme that has become the international gold standard for the characterization of these disorders. This status has been achieved by integrating all relevant data into their disease definitions, including morphology, immunophenotype, genetics and clinical features. The final two chapters of this manual address specific approaches to evaluating bone marrow that is primarily or secondarily involved by lymphoma and cytopenias due to non-neoplastic causes. It is hoped that the impact of this manual will be some measure of demystification of the unfamiliar morphology, hi-tech ancillary studies and complex disease classification schemes that have made bone marrow pathology so intimidating to so many. Use this book as a starting-off point, and then go move some glass.

But what can they mean to Christians seeking to understand their own faith? In this special book, Rabbis Olitzky and Judson guide you through the major Jewish holidays and what they mean for the Jewish people. Each chapter explores a different holiday and explains the origin, historical background, customs and rituals that are part of observance and the holiday's Christian parallels. Examining observance in both home and synagogue--and in all Jewish denominations--this easy-to-use guide to the Jewish holidays will be a valuable resource for your own understanding of Jewish sacred time throughout the year. And by linking the Jewish holidays to familiar Christian holidays and practices, you will be better able to appreciate the roots of Christianity and how the fundamentals of Judaism relate to and reflect your own spiritual foundation.Rosh Hashanah-New YearYom Kippur-Day of AtonementSukkot-Feast of Booths (Fall Harvest Festival)Simchat Torah-Rejoicing in the TorahHanukkah-RededicationPurim-(Festival of Survival)Pesach-PassoverShavuot-(Receiving the Torah)Tisha B'Av (Mourning and Commemoration) and Other Special DaysShabbat (Day of Rest)

Quakers, Social Work, and Justice Concerns: Quakers and the Disciplines: Volume 7
In this volume of the Friends Association for Higher Education's series on Friends and the academic disciplines, ten authors apply theory and history of Quaker work for social change in offering insight into how Friends have approached social work. This collection of essays is divided into three sections. The first considers theory of social work and change. Christy Randazzo applies the work of John Paul Lederach to a theological understanding of Quaker testimony and social action. Daniel Rhodes shares about his application of Quaker principles in his educational work with social work students. Douglas Bennett describes the history and development of Quaker organizations in addressing social issues. A second section looks at individual Quakers' lives and their work. Paul Anderson examines the life of prison reformer Elizabeth Fry, Mark Bredin discusses progressive reformer Lucretia Mott, and Wendy Grab considers the Quaker influences on social work pioneer Jane Addams. The third section considers collective work of Friends in addressing social issues. Nelson Bingham explores the creation of the first mental hospital, the York Retreat, begun by Friends in England. Max L. Carter describes the work of Friends among Midwestern Indians in the early 1800s. Linda B. Selleck draws from her book Gentle Invaders to share the history of Quaker women's educational work among African Americans before and after the Civil War. Jennifer Buck details Quaker involvement in the women's Suffrage movement. About the Editors: Max L. Carter taught in Friends secondary schools in Ramallah and Philadelphia and at Earlham College and Guilford College, retiring in 2015 from Guilford as the William R. A praying mantis insect faces any danger regardless of it's opponent's size and strength. If you've seen their parade of innate fearlessness, it is easy to see why they have inspired the creation of a Chinese martial art style. This anthology assembles the work of four highly qualified authors who present rare information about praying mantis boxing. In the first chapter, Dr. Martin Eisen interviews Gin-foon Mark, a noted fifth-generation master of Guangxi Province Bamboo Grove Praying Mantis. Mark discusses training in Chinese temples and compares it with the common training methods found today. The goals, training, and results are very different. The classical methods include developing the senses for fighting, and medical applications. Dr. Daniel Amos studied praying mantis boxing in Hong Kong. When a person starts to study a martial art, he or she is actually joining a social group to do so. The social structures of Hong Kong martial arts temple cults provide Chinese shunted aside by the dominant status system with an alternative, albeit secondary, system of status achievement. Here, the author presents details of his study and the social setting. The essence of China's varied martial styles has often been preserved in writings. At the heart of this heritage are "character formulas" a short list of characters that is used to establish the most elemental characteristics of a particular martial style. In the third chapter, Dwight Edwards provides an analysis of "The Twelve Character Formula of Seven Star Praying Mantis Boxing." In the following chapter, Ilya Profatilov shares the results of years of researching the mantis systems in China. Old manuscripts describe the origins, theory, and curriculum of praying mantis boxing. Additionally, oral folk traditions, legends, fantastic stories, and songs are utlized. Referencing such sources, the author details the history of this realistic combat system, showing that it preserves its original techniques and classical forms. In the final chapter Profatilov discusses a favored close-range technique he recounts from his tutalage under Master Lin Tangfang (1920-2009) in a small village in Shandong Province. He uses the past to inspire his practice, as we hope this anthology will stimulate further research and practice to all readers.
