A Research Agenda for Emotional Geographies

A Research Agenda for Emotional Geographies

Danielle Drozdzewski; Natasha A. Webster; Tess Osborne; David Conradson

Elgar Research Agendas outline the future of research in a given area. Leading scholars are given the space to explore their subject in provocative ways, and map out the potential directions of travel. They are relevant but also visionary. This forward-looking book examines emotional geographies as both a subdiscipline and a practice. Written collaboratively, the authors demonstrate the diverse ways in which emotions influence research, knowledge and everyday life, inviting readers to recognise emotions as a fundamental component of human understanding, actions and relationships. Chapters highlight how the study of emotional geography provides crucial insights into pillars of daily life, such as power, work, care and social change. Drawing on feminist and embodied traditions, the book combines conceptual reflection, methodological innovation and lived experience to outline the impact of emotional geography on key challenges such as political unrest, the climate crisis, migration and technological change. Tracing the evolution of the field, the authors emphasise its future potential in research and practical applications, as well as its capacity to foster a more empathetic world. A Research Agenda for Emotional Geographies is an illuminating read for scholars and students of human geography, the social sciences and humanities, and particularly those interested in working with emotions across contexts. Feminist, decolonial, migration and climate change researchers will also benefit from the book’s interdisciplinary approach.

Toys go missing, of course, in a house with six children. It's as natural as apple pie and ice-cream. It's a different matter when they start appearing. When beautiful old toy soldiers-just like the ones in the antique shop down the road-start popping up on Mary Frances' bedroom window-sill, her search for clues to the curious figures leads her to a wider mystery. Things aren't where they should be. Or, perhaps, they aren't when they should be. Either way, Mary Frances and her sister Annie are going to need all the help they can get to solve the mystery. That help comes to them unexpectedly in the form of Thunderpaws, a mysterious orange cat with remarkable abilities. With Thunderpaws guiding them, Mary Frances and Annie learn to slip into the space between the lightning and the thunder and emerge into a place that looks a lot like home. Here, too, there are things going missing and other things appearing that don't belong, and a wandering man who might hold the key to the whole affair. The girls meet young boys Evan and Johnathan (who live in a suspiciously familiar-looking farmhouse), and the four children must band together with an elusive group of time-travelling orange cats to put everything back when it belongs.

Dante’s Gluttons: Food and Society from the Convivio to the Comedy explores how the medieval Italian poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) uses food to express and condition the social, political, and cultural values of his time. Combining medieval history, food studies, and literary criticism, Dante’s Gluttons historicizes food and eating in Dante, beginning in his earliest collected poetry and arriving at the end of his major work. For Dante, the consumption of food is not a frivolity, but a crux of life, and gluttony is the abdication of civic and spiritual responsibility and a danger to both the individual body and soul, as well as the greater collective. This book establishes how one of the world’s preeminent authors uses the intimacy and universality of food as a touchstone, forging a community bound by a gastronomic language rooted in the deeply human relationship with material sustenance.
Financing Poor Relief through Charitable Collections in Dutch Towns, c. 1600-1800
In the Dutch Republic, charitable collections, which formed the financial backbone of many poor relief institutions, were regularly organised by both religious and secular authorities. This book examines both the policies of church boards and town councils in organising these charitable appeals, as well as the general population's giving behaviour. Using archival sources from the towns of Delft, Utrecht, Zwolle, and 's-Hertogenbosch, Daniëlle Teeuwen shows how these authorities deployed organisational and rhetorical tactics-including creating awareness, establishing trust, and exerting pressure-to successfully promote fundraising campaigns. Not only did many relief institutions manage to collect large annual sums, but contributions came from across the socioeconomic spectrum.
