This book contains limericks galore, Packed with puns, but also much more: Academic lights And helpful insights May be seen as o'er pages you pore. Is the Bible (gasp ) boring? This set of limericks may change your mind, or at least supply you with enough puns to keep your students awake all semester and enough rhymes to jog their memories before the exam. Or perhaps you want to get onto (or removed from) the church sign committee. Looking at familiar (or less familiar) biblical passages and events in church history from a different angle may even provide new insights--especially if the viewing angle is slightly askew. And, as Proverbs 17:22 says, "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine," so buckle your seatbelt for a ride on the Romans road less taken.

Oxford Street

Greek mythology, schools of psychology, and a child growing up on Oxford Street create the structure for this collection of poems where childhood emotions are explored. The poetic intersection of myth, reality, and analysis offer the hermeneutic framework to unravel "powerlessness" and "fear" of a child. The collection opens to a six-year-old boy's world on "Oxford Street" where the reader enters the boy's home, discovers the rooms, and unlocks the symbols. The mythical figure of Apollo that runs parallel to Oxford Street connects to--and disconnects from--the Greek pantheon of gods in the restructured family relation of gods. Apollo experiences freedom in the open fields of Thessaly but restraint triggered by thoughts of Hestia and Zeus. Interpreting Oxford Street in terms of the relation between the powerlessness and fear of a child, Freud, Jung, Maslow, Adler, Erikson, Sullivan are included in the poetry as avenues of revisiting childhood.

The Rosary signifies prayer--a form of daily prayer and meditation for millions of Roman Catholics across the world--and has been for centuries. The Rosary unites the followers of Christ as one family in a common faith, baptism, and Lord. The power of the Rosary stems not only from the intercession of the Mother of our Savior, but each of the twenty mysteries finds its source in the Bible. The truth of the word of God teaches us not only that the Father sent his Son to save us from our sins so we may have eternal life, but also how we live our communion with Christ through our daily choices. The Rosary and the Bible lead us to Jesus Christ; the Scriptures point to Jesus, and Jesus is at the very center of the Rosary. And so, the Rosary and the Bible provide us with the armor we need to help us in combat: against Satan's deceptions, lies, and attacks. To know the truth, we need the word of God, and to live in truth Jesus gives us his mother at the cross, "This is your mother." We need the grace of God, Mary's intercession, and the word of God in spiritual combat.

Conveying Lived Experience through Rock and Pop Music Lyrics

Conveying Lived Experience through Rock and Pop Music Lyrics explores rock and pop music lyrics of the last seventy years to elucidate a broad spectrum of themes about the collective human experience. The opening chapters discuss personal topics, with a first chapter about developing a romantic relationship and a second chapter about breaking up. Subsequently, lyrics describing nostalgia, that is, the longing for the past, as well as those about leaving home, going on the road, and returning home are considered. More social topics are treated in chapters devoted to lyrics about the outsider in society, those experiencing mental illness, and alcohol and drug use. Next, songs of social and political critique are surveyed, followed by an examination of utopian and dystopian lyrics. Finally, rock and pop songs about religious topics are considered, first with a chapter on the use of the prophetic voice, and then with a description of lyrics about hell and the devil, as well as heaven, angels, and God. This broad survey of several hundred songs, using a close reading approach, shows how rock and pop lyrics convey the lived experience of people in contemporary society.

too little beast: too much human ii is David C. McLean's expansion & revision of his chapbook from Black Editions Press, too much human. The manifesto in the introduction has been rewritten to extend it from antinatalism to also include posthumanism. This extension was provoked by his growing dislike for humans & their goddam ideology, & his worship of another non-human, the love of his life, the wonderful Emma, McLean's brilliant muse & inspiration. This revision constitutes what is probably the last poetry book by McLean that will not be part of the poems for Emma series.

This is a novel that became an anti-novel. It quotes extensively from Lyotard, Artaud, Nietzsche, & Burton's "The Anatomy of Melancholy". It explores the posthuman, antinatalism, overpopulation, & ecology. It is primarily an attempt by the author to identify his love for his muse, Emma, in the form of a bizarre prose poem that grew into a bizarre novel. Sacher-Masoch & St. Augustine of Hippo are sampled in & cited, with footnotes & everything. Deleuze & Guattari with their becoming-animal are featured as well, at some length.
The Heart of the Heartland: Norwegian American Community in the Twin Cities
An in-depth look at the Norwegian American community of Minneapolis-St. Paul and its deep and complex role in the economic, political, and cultural life of the Twin Cities over more than 170 years. Since the earliest days of European settlement in the region, tens of thousands of Norwegians have found their way to Minnesota, adding a distinctive Scandinavian flavor to the state's ethnic and cultural mix. Many early arrivals settled in the cities, while others who initially chose the countryside often departed for urban settings after they had mastered the English language and become accustomed to the ways of their adopted home. The growing Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul became home to Norwegian immigrants and their migrating compatriots alike. These Norwegian Americans took up employment in a range of fields, in both the public and private sectors. They also assembled in churches and charitable organizations, carrying on homeland traditions even as they took on prominent roles in the larger urban scene. By the early twentieth century, public events like Syttende mai drew not only Norwegian Americans but Twin Cities residents more broadly, a level of recognition that explains the persistent sense of Norwegian-ness among later generations. Minnesotans of Norwegian descent in the twenty-first century may not speak their ancestral tongue, but they lovingly uphold many cultural practices of their ancestral home. In The Heart of the Heartland, author David C. Mauk brings together personal interviews, demographic research, and archival exploration to inform stories of assimilation, ascendency, and collaboration among Minnesota's Norwegian Americans and their neighbors over 170 years. The narrative traces not only Twin Cities business, industrial, neighborhood, and cultural histories but also the significant and varied roles Norwegian Americans have played in the region's development.

The Mystery of the Bright StarA hundred years ago, when women were fighting for the right to vote and Hollywood barely existed, Chicago was the center of filmmaking--bustling with movie studios, movie stars, and millionaires. The Windy City produced more motion pictures and had more stars than anyplace else in the world. The brightest star of the era was Catherine Farr, beautiful, intelligent, and beloved by millions. Then she vanished. In March 1920, the Bright Star of the movies boarded a train and never got off.Was she murdered? The prime suspect was her lover, movie director Toby Swanney. But she had angered many people because of her outspoken beliefs. Or perhaps she simply left everything behind to live life on her terms, like so many of the independent women in her films.A hundred years later, her great-great-nephew, a young screenwriter in Hollywood, returns to the small town where Catherine Farr was born to investigate the mystery. As Elliott Farr pieces together the clues of what happened, he rediscovers the rich history of the early movies--the explosion of talent, the remarkable personalities, and the excitement of creating a new art form for the twentieth century--while uncovering what actually happened to the Bright Star of the early movies."David C. Smith takes a long-forgotten piece of American cinema history and creates a mesmerizing story filled with unique characters. Like the movies of long ago, Bright Star is great entertainment." --Michael F. Blake, Author and Two-Time Emmy Award Winner"An engrossing tale of a fictional star's memoir and her puzzling fate."&emdash;Kirkus Reviews
