Hope in Times of War: A Theological Ethic of Contemporary Conflict builds on the work of Karl Barth and H. Richard Niebuhr concerning the second World War to propose an alternative to the classical just-war theory. This theological ethic argues that God must remain primary in ethical decision-making, while allowing for meaningful human action in response to prior divine acts in history. In this way we can be realistic as to the boundaries of human action while remaining hopeful for the future. We do this by realizing that human beings are not rational beings who seek logic and rationality in all their experiences but as symbol-users who strive to understand ourselves and our world by means of symbols or patterns from our traditions. For Christians, Jesus Christ is central to these symbols, and Trinitarian symbols can be used to understand the ethical problem presented by war. The book's final chapter applies this model to Yugoslavia and demonstrates how one ought to think ethically about conflict situations.

It is rarely taught in undergraduate or even graduate curricula that the only conformal maps in Euclidean space of dimension greater than two are those generated by similarities and inversions in spheres. This is in stark contrast to the wealth of conformal maps in the plane. This fact is taught in most complex analysis courses. The principal aim of this text is to give a treatment of this paucity of conformal maps in higher dimensions. The exposition includes both an analytic proof, due to Nevanlinna, in general dimension and a differential geometric proof in dimension three. For completeness, enough complex analysis is developed to prove the abundance of conformal maps in the plane.In addition, the book develops inversion theory as a subject, along with the auxiliary theme of circle-preserving maps. A particular feature is the inclusion of a paper by Caratheodory with the remarkable result that any circle-preserving transformation is necessarily a Mobius transformation - not even the continuity of the transformation is assumed. The text is at the level of advanced undergraduates and is suitable for a capstone course, topics course, senior seminar or as an independent study text.Students and readers with university courses in differential geometry or complex analysis bring with them background to build on, but such courses are not essential prerequisites.

In Only One Place of Redress David E. Bernstein offers a bold reinterpretation of American legal history: he argues that American labor and occupational laws, enacted by state and federal governments after the Civil War and into the twentieth century, benefited dominant groups in society to the detriment of those who lacked political power. Both intentionally and incidentally, claims Bernstein, these laws restricted in particular the job mobility and economic opportunity of blacks.A pioneer in applying the insights of public choice theory to legal history, Bernstein contends that the much-maligned jurisprudence of the Lochner era-with its emphasis on freedom of contract and private market ordering-actually discouraged discrimination and assisted groups with little political clout. To support this thesis he examines the motivation behind and practical impact of laws restricting interstate labor recruitment, occupational licensing laws, railroad labor laws, minimum wage statutes, the Davis-Bacon Act, and New Deal collective bargaining. He concludes that the ultimate failure of Lochnerism-and the triumph of the regulatory state-not only strengthened racially exclusive labor unions but contributed to a massive loss of employment opportunities for African Americans, the effects of which continue to this day. Scholars and students interested in race relations, labor law, and legal or constitutional history will be fascinated by Bernstein’s daring-and controversial-argument.

To the extent that it remains a practice of representation, anthropology, however complex, critical, or self-reflexive, cannot avoid objectifying its others. Extending beyond a critique of anthropology, the book reads the twinned notions of the human and culture across the long history of the human sciences broadly conceived, including anthropology, cultural studies, history, literature, and philosophy. Although there is no chance, they argue, for a "new" anthropology that would not repeat the old anthropology's problem of disciplining the other, they also recognize that there may be no way out of anthropology. We are always writing, thinking, and living in anthropology's wake, within its specific compass or horizon. Moreover, they demonstrate, we have been doing so for a very long time, since at least the beginning of the institution of philosophy in Plato and Aristotle.

Fresh out of college, David Stuart put off graduate school to take a job close to his West Virginia home as a counselor at the Youth Development Center at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Known locally as the Morganza, the facility was founded in the nineteenth century as a farm for orphaned boys. By the 1960s, the Morganza had long been burdened with a sinister reputation when it was converted into a detention center for Allegheny County youth convicted of crimes ranging from petty theft to armed robbery, rape, and murder. Reporting for duty during the racially turbulent and riot-torn summer of 1967, Stuart describes the life of students and staff in what was, in reality, a youth prison camp. Confronted with the glaring shortcomings of the reform school's methods of rehabilitation, Stuart irritated the bureaucracy, advocating for detainees whose only crimes were a lack of education and belonging to the wrong race or economic class. He confronted an establishment that refused to distinguish between hardened criminals and those who would benefit from actual reform.
