Some Observations on Eighteenth Century Poetry

Some Observations on Eighteenth Century Poetry

David Nichol Smith

University of Toronto Press
1937
pokkari
This study of the poetry of the eighteenth century is written with appropriate clarity, grace, and wit. It does not profess to offer a new estimate, although it does dispel the notions still found at times about the "poetic diction" of Pope and the distinction between "classical" and "romantic" in the poetry of the period. Pope, Dryden, Samuel Johnson, Thomson, and Burns are dealth with perceptively in the three lectures. More than two decades have passed since Professor Nichol Smith delivered these lectures, and the book remains in constant demand. This new edition includes minor amendments.
The Shadow of Sorcery

The Shadow of Sorcery

In the dark age of an ancient world, a woman loved by a demonic sorcerer is betrayed by her own blood-cursed, cast out, condemned to die. But death is not the end. She is reborn, carrying within her the memory of old wounds and older powers, and with her rebirth comes the promise of a reckoning long overdue. Now she moves through a world of shadow and sorcery, drawing to her side a warrior of terrible skill-a killer untouched by mercy or scruple-as she reaches across centuries for the dark magic that was always meant to be hers. The sorcerer who once loved her still waits on his lonely island. The king who betrayed her still sits his throne. And she has not forgotten. A classic of the sword-and-sorcery genre, appearing in a freshly revised text from the author and available for the first time in nearly fifty years, this is a tale of vengeance, desire, and conquest-where the line between victim and predator is drawn in blood and shadow, and a queen of darkness rises to claim what the world once denied her.

Intrinsic Investing

Intrinsic Investing

Intrinsic investing is based on the concept that an asset is worth what it pays or saves the owner, and not its market price. This style of investing allows you to estimate the value of almost any asset. The investor therefore has some idea when the market price is high and purchase should be avoided, and when the price is low and investment is advantageous. It is an alternative approach to simply placing your money in a mutual fund, or any other investment, and hoping that the market price increases.

Mind World

Mind World

Smith David Woodruff

Cambridge University Press
2004
pokkari
This collection explores the structure of consciousness and its place in the world, or inversely the structure of the world and the place of consciousness in it. Amongst the topics covered are: the phenomenological aspects of experience (inner awareness, self-awareness), dependencies between experience and the world (the role of the body in experience, the role of culturally formed background ideas) and the basic ontological categories found in the world at large (unity, state-of-affairs, connectedness, dependence and intentionality). Developing ideas drawn from historical figures such as Descartes, Husserl, Aristotle, and Whitehead, the essays together demonstrate the interdependence of ontology and phenomenology and its significance for the philosophy of mind.

Folklore of the Winnebago Tribe

Folklore of the Winnebago Tribe

Smith David Lee

University of Oklahoma Press
1997

The oral tradition of the Winnebago, or Ho-Chunk, people ranges from creation myths to Trickster stories and histories of the tribe. It is particularly strong in animal tales, as storyteller and tribal historian David Lee Smith vividly demonstrates in Folklore of the Winnebago Tribe, a collection drawn from the Smithsonian Institution and other sources, including the work of contemporaries. Smith himself contributes fourteen tales. In the book we meet relatively recent characters such as Ho-poe-kaw (Glory-of-the-Morning), the famed and formidable woman chief who battled many other tribes as well as whites, threw historic alliances into disarray, and - although she often discomfited the French - married a Frenchman. We also encounter traditional figures, Trickster, talking dogs, Eagle, Owl, and Rabbit, moving through the chronicles of these Woodland people who stemmed from the Great Lakes region. The tales incorporate both the visionary and the down-to-earth. Some are deeply moving. Some, reflecting earlier items, are full of violence.
Sir Edward Coke and the Reformation of the Laws

Sir Edward Coke and the Reformation of the Laws

Smith David Chan

Cambridge University Press
2014
sidottu
Throughout his early career, Sir Edward Coke joined many of his contemporaries in his concern about the uncertainty of the common law. Coke attributed this uncertainty to the ignorance and entrepreneurship of practitioners, litigants, and other users of legal power whose actions eroded confidence in the law. Working to limit their behaviours, Coke also simultaneously sought to strengthen royal authority and the Reformation settlement. Yet the tensions in his thought led him into conflict with James I, who had accepted many of the criticisms of the common law. Sir Edward Coke and the Reformation of the Laws reframes the origins of Coke's legal thought within the context of law reform and provides a new interpretation of his early career, the development of his legal thought, and the path from royalism to opposition in the turbulent decades leading up to the English civil wars.
Less Than Human

Less Than Human

Smith David Livingstone

St Martin's Press

"Brute." "Cockroach." "Lice." "Vermin." People often regard members of their own kind as less than human, and use terms like these for those whom they wish to harm, enslave, or exterminate. Dehumanization has made atrocities like the Holocaust, the genocide in Rwanda, and the slave trade possible. But it isn't just a relic of the past. We still find it in war, genocide, xenophobia, and racism. Smith shows that it is a dangerous mistake to think of dehumanization as the exclusive preserve of Nazis, communists, terrorists, Jews, Palestinians, or any other monster of the moment. We are all potential dehumanizers, just as we are all potential objects of dehumanization. The problem of dehumanization is everyone's problem. "Less Than Human" is the first book to illuminate precisely how and why we sometimes think of others as subhuman creatures. It draws on a rich mix of history, evolutionary psychology, biology, anthropology, and philosophy to document the pervasiveness of dehumanization, describe its forms, and explain why we so often resort to it. "Less Than Human" is a powerful and highly original study of the roots of human violence and bigotry, and it as timely as it is relevant.
