At the age of 16, a boy amongst men, Andy Farrell made his first-team debut for Wigan Warriors – and became a father for the first time. At 18, he won his first senior international cap. At 21, he won his first Man of Steel Award for the Super League player of the year. He went on to win the Golden Boot award for world player of the year. All of that on its own would have been enough to make him a sporting legend – and none of it even hinted at the fascinating second chapter of his sporting life, as a rugby union player with Saracens and England, or the third chapter, as a highly successful and beloved union coach. Under his leadership, Ireland have played a brilliant brand of rugby combining precision and freedom, and have won two of the past three Six Nations championships.Warm, thoughtful and passionate, Andy Farrell is not just a brilliant rugby man: he is a fascinating human being. His autobiography brings us back to his childhood in Wigan, when he made a meteoric ascent to the highest levels of rugby league. He writes about his ambitious attempt to remake himself as a rugby union player in his thirties. He writes about the importance of family in his life and he traces the journey that has led to him become one of rugby's most successful coaches, explaining what he has learned about leadership along the way.

The mountains and spectacular coastline of County Waterford are rich in traditional stories. Even today, in the modern world of internet and supermarkets, old legends dating as far back as the days of the ancient Gaelic tribes and the carvers of the ogham stones are still told and are gathered here in this unique collection of tales from across the county. Included here are tales of well-known legendary figures such as Aoife and Strongbow, St Declan and the three river goddesses Eiru, Banba and Fodhla, guardians of the rivers Suir, Nore and Barrow, as well as stories of less well-known characters such as Petticoat Loose, whose ghost is said to still roam the county, and the Republican Pig, who was unfortunate enough to become caught up in the siege of Waterford. In a vivid journey through Waterford’s landscape, from the towns and villages to the remotest places, by mountains, cliffs and valleys, local storyteller Anne Farrell takes the reader along old and new roads to places where legend and landscape are inseparably linked.

County Kilkenny abounds in folk tales, myths and legends and a selection of the best, drawn from historical sources and newly recorded local reminiscence, have been brought to life here by local storyteller Anne Farrell. Kilkenny is the place where, legend has it, St Evin and St Molin once had to have their dispute settled by a shoal of fish; where the infamous Countess of Ormond brought fear and terror to the people of Grannagh; and where an imprudent local man decided to find out if the supposedly bottomless ‘Kerry holes’ would live up to their reputation. It is also said to be the home of a plethora of strange and magical creatures and stories abound of encounters with fairies, ghosts, banshees, shape-shifters and an army of cats who fought an epic battle near Dunmore Caves. From age-old legends and fantastical myths, to amusing anecdotes and cautionary tales, this collection is a heady mix of bloodthirsty, funny, passionate and moving stories. It will take you into a remarkable world where you can let your imagination run wild.

Robert Louis Stevenson in Samoa

Robert Louis Stevenson in Samoa

Shortlised for the Saltire Society Non Fiction Book of the Year Award Almost every adult and child is familiar with his Treasure Island, but few know that Robert Louis Stevenson lived out his last years on an equally remote island, which was squabbled over by colonial powers much as Captain Flint's treasure was contested by the mongrel crew of the Hispaniola. In 1890 Stevenson settled in Upolu, an island in Samoa, after two years sailing round the South Pacific. He was given a Samoan name and became a fierce critic of the interference of Germany, Britain and the U.S.A. in Samoan affairs - a stance that earned him Oscar Wilde's sneers, and brought him into conflict with the Colonial Office, who regarded him as a menace and even threatened him with expulsion from the island.Joseph Farrell's pioneering study of Stevenson's twilight years stands apart from previous biographies by giving as much weight to the Samoa and the Samoans - their culture, their manners, their history - as to the life and work of the man himself. For it is only by examining the full complexity of Samoa and the political situation it faced as the nineteenth century gave way to the twentieth, that Stevenson's lasting and generous contribution to its cause can be appreciated.

Revisiting Postmodernism invites readers to see postmodernism in a new light: not just as a style, but as a cultural phenomenon which embraces all areas of life, and thrives on complexity and pluralism. Focusing on architecture but touching on other elements of design, urban planning and place making, this engaging book reflects both on the historical movement and on how postmodernism influences practices today.Sir Terry Farrell and Adam Nathaniel Furman present two separate but complementary perspectives of this rich period of architectural history; one account as lived experience from a protagonist and pioneer in the field of postmodern architecture, and the other analysing the movement afresh, through the lens of the 21st century.Shedding new light onto the forces and influences of the time, and offering insight into how these were transforming approaches to architecture both in the UK and internationally, this important book presents a new appreciation of this period of architectural history. Sumptuously illustrated with examples from across the globe, Revisiting Postmodernism offers a fresh perspective on buildings of this period, sharing their richness, diversity, and brilliance, with an emphasis on what was interesting, beautiful and unique about the architecture which emerged from this unusually fertile moment in history.

When Jane Farrell's mother, at the age of 96, could no longer cope with living alone, her daughter Jane took her in to live with her. Jane found she was now, in a sense, 'raising' the mother who had raised her and her sister, so many years before. As her mother's health declined, Jane and her sister cared for her increasingly, exercising with her to keep her mobile, playing games, watching planes from the backyard, cooking for her and finally just being there with her as her last hours passed. This little book, written in diary form, tells the touching story of their final days together.
Sugar Bush & Other Stories

Sugar Bush & Other Stories

Jenn Farrell

Anvil Press Publishers Inc

The stories in 'Sugar Bush & Other Stories' deal with gender relations, love, and sex in a frank way. Most of the pieces feature female protagonists who navigate their young adult years in some questionable ways. They make some ill-advised choices, which are driven by their naïve quests for "individuality," while at the same time having an almost pathological need to be loved by everyone-especially men. While the stories in 'Sugar Bush' are intended for an adult audience, they employsome of the conventions of the young adult genre. They are simple, straight-ahead narratives. Part breathless teenaged confessional and part wistful and wiser looks back, 'Sugar Bush' is the first collection of short fiction by award-winning author, Jenn Farrell. "Populated by eccentrics, 'Sugar Bush' is a collection of coming-of-age stories. What makes them unique and engaging in what is often an overwrought genre is Farrell's humour and sense of irony."

'The Devil You Know' is the follow-up volume to Farrell's acclaimed debut collection, 'Sugar Bush & Other Stories'. The stories in 'The Devil You Know' deal with the familiar, yet ever-engrossing, territories of sex, love, work, birth, and death. Life's defining moments are explored through the eyes of female characters, from children to teens to adults. Family relationships, particularly between mothers and daughters, are a central theme of this collection. All families have secretsand things unspoken, but eventually these dark truths come to light, often in surprising and transformative ways. "Farrell effectively forges her image as a bad-ass version of Alice Munro. Like Munro, she's a short story writer who focuses on the lives of girls and women in small-town Canada, but Farrell's characters get high on mushrooms and dabble in BDSM." - The Georgia Straight There are points in Jenn Farrell's amazing collection that I felt like I was listening in on the most intimate conversations of strangers-I was rapt with attention, but almost guilty for being privy to such intimacy. 'The Devil You Know' treads familiar territory-small town ennui, adolescent love, grief and self-destruction-but does it with such emotional acuity that it doesn't feel familiar at all, it feels extraordinary. - Catherine Hanrahan author of 'Lost Girls and Love Hotels'

The European Arrest Warrant in Ireland examines in detail, the practice and procedure surrounding the European arrest warrant and its application in Ireland. Surrender under the European Arrest Warrant Act, 2003 has replaced extradition under Parts II and III of the Extradition Act, 1965 as the principal mode of extradition in Europe. The 2003 Act has been operational since 2004 and there are now in excess of 100 written decisions in relation to its operation. In the last number of months a significant number of decisions have finally made there way to the Supreme Court as a result of which many issues can now be regarded as reasonably well settled law for the first time. In addition there have been a number of recent decisions from the European Court of Justice in relation to the manner in which the Framework Decision ought to be approached by domestic courts in construing domestic legislation. The number of applications under the 2003 Act has roughly doubled each year for the last three years and is likely to continue to increase as EU Member States attempt to implement the new procedures in place. This book will be an essential resource for all lawyers dealing with European Arrest Warrants.
