God's Plan for Your Marriage: An Exploration of Holy Matrimony from Genesis to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb
This life is preparation for eternity, and from the beginning, God created marriage to help married couples become saints. Indeed, God has given to married couples the profound gift of being able to fulfill the purpose of their creation through, with, and in each other. Marriage is a foreshadowing of Heaven, and each married couple must work with God if their marriage is to be a foretaste of eternity. In this thought-provoking and uplifting book, Fr. Robert Altier unpacks the theological significance of the Sacrament of Marriage and brilliantly explains how it has been a part of God 1/2 1/2 1/2s plan from the beginning - and will eventually be fulfilled at the Marriage Banquet of the Lamb in Heaven. Teeming with practical wisdom and clear examples, these pages delve into the surpassing dignity of marriage as a covenant and a sacrament - and a call to holiness. You will learn how the graces and virtues that are conferred in the Sacrament of Marriage transform the unity of the couple - not just in the flesh but in the heart and soul. You 1/2 1/2 1/2ll learn how to predispose yourself to receive this divine power and, best of all, how to love your spouse more deeply. You will also explore the significance of marriage vows and how men are called to be the spiritual leaders and women are called to be the heart of their families.Fr. Altier tackles contemporary questions and concerns, such as the real meaning of "being subject to one another in marriage" and those sensitive and controversial issues regarding sexual morality. Arguably one of the most theologically eye-opening books on marriage ever written, this book also explains: The definitive reasons why marriage can exist only between a man and a womanHow the married couple embodies the life-giving love of the Most Blessed TrinityWhy the Sacrament of Marriage makes the couple a new creationThe characteristics of true love and how to love with heroic charityHow to avoid settling for mediocrity in love and service to othersThe vital connection between Baptism, Marriage, and the Holy EucharistWhy you must become vulnerable in love in order to become receptive to loveHow marriage leads to overcoming sinful tendencies and makes saintsThe necessity of prayer in marriage for the individual, the couple, and the familyHow a deeper theological understanding of the Holy Eucharist and Marriage deepens marital intimacyWhy "the two becoming one" in marriage is foremost a spiritual union

Psychology and the Cross

To the initial astonishment of Catholic moral theologians a century ago, purging psychology of its amoral and antireligious errors was found to actually confirm age-old Catholic teaching about the nature of man while providing invaluable guidance on the development of personality. In this trail-blazing book, first published in 1958, Fr. G. Emmett Carter has assembled the wisest Christian thought showing how psychology can aid the Christian in achieving maturity, overcoming character defects, and conquering emotional disorders.Fr. Carter - founding director of Montreal's St. Joseph Teachers College - begins with a layman's survey of modern psychology, revealing the "biases" during the age of Freud that caused him and many others to hold erroneous positions on the nature of man, religion, and God. He then shows how sound psychology draws all its strength from Christianity. Psychology, he writes, explains why we are anxious and afraid; Christianity provides the remedy. Fr. Carter goes on to reveal: How self-analysis is beneficial in leading to wisdom, peace, and lasting securityWhere the Bible itself provides us with "a blueprint for the study of man's psychic forces"The main findings - and chief errors - of contemporary psychologyHow connecting religion and psychology leads to maturity, which is "the meeting place of the true man and the true Christian"The centrality of the doctrine of Original Sin to understanding the psychological makeup of the individualGuidelines for parents and educators for bringing young people to maturityWhy suicide always represents a fundamental error of thoughtHow your unconscious mind operatesMost notably, you will learn to maintain consistent motivation to attain Christian perfection. You will also learn how to overcome antisocial behavior and how to foster a healthy ego.
The Secret of the Bethlehem Shepherds

The Secret of the Bethlehem Shepherds

Fr Dwight Longenecker

St. Luke's story of shepherds in the fields keeping watch over their flocks by night echoes in the hearts and minds of millions who have heard the story told and retold year after year.Like most well-loved tales, the simple account of the adoration by the shepherds has grown and developed over the ages. Extra traditions have attached themselves to it. Charming characters and details have become part of the story. Beautiful preaching points have illuminated the tale and unlocked the story's deeper meanings. Many of these "extras" however, were conditioned by later cultural assumptions and colored by devotions removed from historical reality. What are the true circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ? What was Bethlehem like at the time of Jesus' birth, and why was the little village so important? How did Joseph and Mary meet, and why did they travel to Bethlehem? Were they really homeless the night Jesus was born? Was there an inn, a "No vacancy" sign, and a grumpy innkeeper? Who were the shepherds, why were the manger and the swaddling clothes a "sign" to them, and why were they so important to St. Luke? After completing The Mystery of the Magi -- his groundbreaking study of the wise men -- Fr. Dwight Longenecker took a sabbatical in Jerusalem to study the ancient texts and the geography, history, politics, and culture of the time. He added his own firsthand visit to present-day Bethlehem shepherds in order to unlock the secret of the Bethlehem shepherds. This little book sheds new light on an old, old story, deepening its beauty and enriching your Advent and Christmas celebrations for years to come.

The New Atheists

The New Atheists

The new atheists criticize Christianity with assumptions drawn from the Western intellectual tradition. They seem unwilling to concede to this fact. They seem unwilling to concede to this fact. They argue that they place their trust in science, but they seem unaware that science, like philosophy, is dependent upon epistemology. The theory of knowledge provides no theoretical certainty. In a word, their atheism is indemonstrable. Moreover, the new atheists are ignorant on what so call "Eastern Christianity" (Eastern Orthodoxy). She teaches that God is incomprehensible. Unlike the Western intellectual tradition, the East denies that God is being the idea which is basic to that tradition. But more than that, the new atheists simply deny the supernatural, an arbitrary presupposition. The theists only strengthen the position of the new atheists by conceding that they dispute about the same Deity. Both are unaware that the knowledge of God is not cognitive but gnostic, spiritual knowledge, an access to the truth impossible to materialists. Furthermore, the new atheists have no knowledge of the Eastern Church, a knowledge is involves more the "supernatural." The knowledge of God transcends the powers of reason. It includes the moral condition of the soul. Dispassion is necessary for such knowledge; and also true faith. To know that God exists and who He is requires more than intellectual ingenuity.

The How-To Book of Catholic Theology: Everything You Need to Know But No One Ever Taught You
As you'll learn in The How-to Book of Catholic Theology: Everything You Need to Know But No One Ever Taught You, theology at its core is about encountering God's self-revelation in Christ through the Church. In his clear, conversational style, theologian Father John Cush offers a comprehensive overview of Catholic theology, making it both approachable and actionable. In this complete guide you'll learn: Models (or styles) of being a theologian What you need to start your study of theology How to form a theological method How to use the tools of theology How to reconcile differences in theology How the study of theology leads to holiness of life The How-to Book of Catholic Theology also includes points to remember, recommended reading, and advice for building your personal theological library. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in Brooklyn, New York, Father John Patrick Cush is a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Ordained in 1998, he earned the Doctorate in Sacred Theology (STD) from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, with a specialization in fundamental theology. Father Cush currently serves as academic dean and as a formation advisor at the Pontifical North American College, Vatican City-State. He is an adjunct assistant professor of theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and an adjunct professor of Church History at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross, both in Rome, Italy. Father Cush writes regularly for the National Catholic Register, The Tablet, The Evangelist, and Homiletic & Pastoral Review. He has served as a parish priest, high school teacher, and a Censor of Books for his diocese. This is his first book. "Everyone's a theologian, because everyone believes something about God, even those who reject him. So, the question is not whether we have a theology but whether that theology is true. And that's what makes this excellent book by Fr. John Cush so needed and helpful: It guides us in forming a true theology. From principles on how to develop our theological beliefs to a background on the sources and history of Catholic theology, this primer boils down several years of theology classes into a smart, clear overview. The bonus Appendices, which offer book lists for building a Catholic theological home library, are worth their weight in gold I highly recommended this book to the beginning theology student, educated layperson, or anyone wanting their views about to God to be well-formed and aligned with the Church." -- Brandon Vogt, author of Why I Am Catholic and Content Director at Word on Fire Catholic Ministries "Unlike most theology texts today, Father Cush knows that to understand anything about the divine, one must be properly intellectually, ecclesially, and even mystically conformed to Jesus Christ as encountered through his Mystical Body, the Church. These clear and concise pages outline precisely what that means, to love God by seeking him truly." -- Fr. David Meconi, S.J., Director, Catholic Studies Centre, Saint Louis University and Editor, Homiletic & Pastoral Review "This little gem provides a fine introduction to the content and methodology of Catholic theology, as well as an understanding of how the study of theology can lead to an increase in personal holiness. Fr. Cush keeps the reader engaged through frequent reflections on his own background and experience in pastoral ministry throughout the book. Whether you are a seminarian, college student, or adult learner, you will surely find this book to be illuminative and enriching." -- Dr. Mark J. Zia, Professor of Sacred Theology & Director of Academic Enrichment Programs, Benedictine College "Father John P. Cush has provided a comprehensive, well-organized guide to the basic principles needed for studying theology. The reader benefits from the unbiased selections and wide variety of solid teaching presented, which is so necessary for beginners in theology. With scholarship, humor, and style, Father Cush is able to inspire the reader to love theology. This book will be a gift for students and professors alike for Fundamental Theology courses, as well as anyone simply interested in theology as a field." -- Sister Mary Angelica Neenan, O.P., University of Dallas "Father Cush has achieved a marvel: a short, extremely friendly 'how-to' manual for the study of theology for any Catholic who believes in Jesus Christ and wants to know and love him more. He offers the reader not only the 'nuts and bolts' essential to a rock-solid Catholic theology, but he does so while modeling the right spiritual disposition with which a Catholic should undertake theology. I heartily recommend this book for anyone beginning informal or formal theological study or theological teaching." -- Matthew T. Gerlach, PhD, Dean of the Institute for Lay Ministry and Associate Professor of Theology, Sacred Heart Major Seminary
