Disappearing Cities

Disappearing Cities

Disappearing Cities is a collection of over fifty short stories of invented cities, set in the not too distant future, destroyed by varied climate change impacts and linked natural disasters. The stories bring into question the relation between the natural and unnatural forces of change and expose responses to, and lessons learnt, from different disaster crises situations. Stories also focus on how means to adapt are sought. The projected fictions are created from projected current climate facts; trends; and the author’s experience of population displacement, relocation and design-based climate change responsive action. Central to the book is the recognition that to be able to respond and adapt to the scale of coming changes in the climate requires going beyond existing practical action and embracing a new way of imagining futures. Disappearing Cities aims to stimulate ways of meeting this need. The book opens with a Prologue that establishes the contextual frame of empirical foundation out of which the fictions are created. It recognises that we all live in a world in which the conditions that will result in huge numbers of cities disappearing are underway. From the human perspective, the process appears to be very slow, whereas in historico-geological time, it is happening exceptionally quickly. The number of the loss of cities is going to be huge, yet the recognition that this will occur is not arriving, In part, this is because of a lack of knowledge, but equally, it reflects a lack of imagination. Transposing what is known about climate change by a significant percentage of the societies of many nations to actual environments in which they live is just not arriving. What appears so solid and established fails to be seen and imagined as a risk and vulnerable. From establishing this opening perspective, the first part of the book presents stories of cities already disappearing as a result of the forces of nature changed by anthropogenically created global warming. Part two discusses the impacts of natural disasters being made unnaturally. For example, by the way industrial societies are damaging and changing natural systems, including the climatic. The final part goes to cities destroyed by completely un-natural means, including war. Disappearing Cities aims to contribute to meeting the need for a better understanding of, and ability to imagine, the risks to which vast numbers of cities are, and will be, exposed to forces of disappearance. To do this, the narratives are a hybrid of fact and fiction. The work was inspired by Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities and is intended to be a salient contemporary companion to this text. It mirrors its form but differs in style and content. Invisible Cities attained diverse readership, Disappearing Cities aspires to do likewise.

As Britain's leading psychic medium, perhaps it's not surprising that more than 200,000 people buy tickets every year to see Colin Fry's theatre tour up and down the country (and in New Zealand). It's also not surprising that his top-rating TV show, 6ixth Sense, is now in its 7th series and continues to hold an average of 100,000 viewers per month. With such an enormous fan base, there is therefore huge interest in Colin Fry's first book, Life Before Death.A compelling read, full of extraordinary stories from his life and work, it also investigates a theme which comes up time and again in his conversations with people who come to him for readings: how do you make the most of your time in this world. Colin Fry has a gift for being able to receive messages from souls in the spirit world. Remarkable, and fascinating as this is he feels strongly that the messages he receives should be used to help us maximise our life's potential. Life Before Death explains how he was able to develop his gift, and what being a psychic medium actually means. But it also gives advice on how to make better connections with your friends and family, how to be open to new things in life, how to both forgive and give more readily, and how to accept all that happens to you.

'We recognise that the journey for you as an overseas medical graduate (OMG) through GP training is likely to be more difficult than for a UK graduate, and so the primary aim of this book is to help you navigate that journey. We hope that through this book we will equip you to be a better UK general practitioner than you might otherwise be. An inevitable by-product of that will be improved success in postgraduate exams. Hopefully you will also experience the enhanced job satisfaction that comes from a sense of a job well done. You will also be better equipped to improve your own continuing professional development (CPD) and so provide better patient care, and satisfy the requirements of appraisal and revalidation.' From the Introduction There is significant evidence that OMGs may well find some aspects of training more difficult. The challenges faced can be broadly divided into three categories - cultural complexities, doctor and patient expectations, and language barriers. Between 2010 and 2012 OMG candidates for the Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) were fifteen times more likely to fail than white UK graduates (failure rate 65% compared to 4.5%). In 2012, however, a quarter of the UK general practice workforce was made up of people who qualified overseas. This book provides invaluable assistance and expertise for both individuals and educators. It is full of ideas, helpful tips, tricks and sound advice on areas such as consultation style, language, culture, communication and ways to succeed in UK assessments. It also equips readers with the skills to improve their own continuing professional development, provide better patient care, and satisfy the requirements of appraisal and revalidation. It complements any initiative GP schools and universities have on offer, expanding on areas requiring more detail, and is an ideal manual for all OMGs, particularly those wanting to become general practitioners in the United Kingdom. It is also highly recommended for those just starting or having recently completed their GP training. Medical educators and other healthcare professionals will also find this book enlightening.

Design as Politics confronts the inadequacy of contemporary politics to deal with unsustainability. Current 'solutions' to unsustainability are analysed as utterly insufficient for dealing with the problems but, further than this, the book questions the very ability of democracy to deliver a sustainable future. Design as Politics argues that finding solutions to this problem, of which climate change is only one part, demands original and radical thinking. Rather than reverting to failed political ideologies, the book proposes a post-democratic politics. In this, Design occupies a major role, not as it is but as it could be if transformed into a powerful agent of change, a force to create and extend freedom. The book does no less than position Design as a vital form of political action.
