For Love and Freedom

For Love and Freedom

The South African bush is the back drop of an exciting love story between two individuals from different cultures. Eugene and Susan have always considered themselves proper in the eyes of what their respective cultures believe until fate brings them together turning their lives in to turmoil. The great gold rush has brought people from all over the world to the Transvaal, much to the agitation of the Boers, bringing an already strained relationship between the Boer republic and the English empire to breaking point. War is imminent and both sides are blinded by greed and hate. Can two families put aside their personal feelings for love or will hatred prove to be more powerful?
Begin. Open. Anywhere: A Journey Through Words That Will Inspire, Entertain And Empower You From Mark Twain to Mother Teresa, Shakespeare to
This is a book that can be opened anywhere and give you words that you will love. It includes great thoughts that will guide you in life. Every day of your life you have the opportunity to sit down with someone who will educate you in whatever way you wish, someone who will make you laugh, someone who will make you cry in a way that makes you more grateful for the life you have, someone who will help you overcome the obstacles in your life by showing you how she overcame similar obstacles in her life, someone who expresses your feelings in ways that help you better understand who you are, someone who will show you what it takes to become a hero, a failure, a sinner or a saint; you will have the opportunity to DISCOVER, and all you need to do is . . . read Every once in a while we stumble upon words that touch us, that resonate with us, that make us reread them over and over, and over again. Because we feel them change us. Or, at least, because they make us begin to want to change. And yet, those same words haunt us days later because we have lost them somewhere in the recesses of our mind. We have forgotten them. We may still recall their essence. We may recall the lesson. But we can't recall the language that sent us, momentarily at least, into a world where we felt awe. Which is a world in which we feel awesome. Instead, we find ourselves in a world of frustration. "What was it," we ask ourselves, "that Emerson said that so encapsulates the value-and pleasure-of knowledge?" "What was it that Mark Twain said about a cat sitting on a hot stove?" "What was it that Abraham Lincoln said he would do for the first 4 hours if he was given 6 hours to chop down a tree?" You knew it once. You read it once. But where? And how many opportunities have you had since, to share it, to delight the minds of others with a neat story, a neat quote, at a perfect moment-only to be silent, searching for the words, and coming up short? And then there are those other situations where you know that tomorrow a subject will come up. You remember reading somewhere the perfect words related to that subject. But you not only don't remember the words, you don't remember the book you read them in. So much for tomorrow. You had hoped to be quick, and, instead, you were quiet. Well, hopefully, this book will help you. You may not remember everything, but there will be words that stick with you. And you will be happier for them. If you love to read, if you love to discover and learn, you will absolutely love this book. You can't read it without, at some point, feeling the words were hand-picked for you. We can all identify with Steve Martin's observation that "Some people have a way with words, and other people, oh, uh, not have way." The first thing this book does is help you think better, about better things, but what it may also do is help you express those thoughts in ways that you always wished you could. You might have searched for years to find the great thoughts that are captured here, but, instead--in one volume--you have the opportunity to reflect with some of the best minds on Acceptance, Attitude, Character, Choices, Compassion, Courage, Faith, Forgiveness, Friendship, Happiness, Humor, Imagination, Language, Life, Love, Parental Encouragement, Parenting, Perseverance, Reading and Self-Reliance. Niemandsland

Niemandsland

Niemandsland is the untold story of the largest and most enduring of the unoccupied enclaves that survived after Germany's invasion and occupation by Allied forces in 1945. Sandwiched between American and Red Army lines, the 500,000 inhabitants were cut off from the outside world and left to fend for themselves in the face of crippling shortages of food, fuel and housing. Gareth Pritchard charts how groups of Communists, Socialists and antifascists came together to form 'antifascist' committees which seized power and set about restoring order, ensuring the supply of food and essential services and hunting down, disarming and arresting fugitive Nazis. This is not only a fascinating history in its own right but it also sheds important new light on the fate of Germany after 1945. Only in Niemandsland do we see what happened when the currents of post-Nazi German politics were allowed to flow freely, unimpeded by Allied intervention.

Vitiation of Contracts proposes a new theory to explain the rationale of general vitiating factors in English contract law. It provides a clear link to voluntariness as the foundation of contractual liability and compares the English position, in light of this theory, with the Principles of International Commercial Contracts (PICC), the Principles of European Contract Law (PECL), the Draft Common Frame of Reference (DCFR) and the US Restatement (Second) of Contracts.
Carbon Markets in a Climate-Changing Capitalism

Carbon Markets in a Climate-Changing Capitalism

Gareth Bryant

Cambridge University Press

The promise of harnessing market forces to combat climate change has been unsettled by low carbon prices, financial losses, and ongoing controversies in global carbon markets. And yet governments around the world remain committed to market-based solutions to bring down greenhouse gas emissions. This book discusses what went wrong with the marketisation of climate change and what this means for the future of action on climate change. The book explores the co-production of capitalism and climate change by developing new understandings of relationships between the appropriation, commodification and capitalisation of nature. The book reveals contradictions in carbon markets for addressing climate change as a socio-ecological, economic and political crisis, and points towards more targeted and democratic policies to combat climate change. This book will appeal to students, researchers, policy makers and campaigners who are interested in climate change and climate policy, and the political economy of capitalism and the environment.
Weak Multiplex Percolation

Weak Multiplex Percolation

In many systems consisting of interacting subsystems, the complex interactions between elements can be represented using multilayer networks. However percolation, key to understanding connectivity and robustness, is not trivially generalised to multiple layers. This Element describes a generalisation of percolation to multilayer networks: weak multiplex percolation. A node belongs to a connected component if at least one of its neighbours in each layer is in this component. The authors fully describe the critical phenomena of this process. In two layers with finite second moments of the degree distributions the authors observe an unusual continuous transition with quadratic growth above the threshold. When the second moments diverge, the singularity is determined by the asymptotics of the degree distributions, creating a rich set of critical behaviours. In three or more layers the authors find a discontinuous hybrid transition which persists even in highly heterogeneous degree distributions, becoming continuous only when the powerlaw exponent reaches $1+1/(M-1)$ for $M$ layers.
A Philosophy of Playing Drum Kit

The author is a drummer with experience in a variety of musical genres and contexts, with emphasis on rock and related styles. This auto ethnographic Element presents the author's philosophy of playing drum kit. The text explains how playing drum kit matters to this musician and may resonate with others to whom making music matters in similar ways. The Element contains audio files of music in which the author plays drum kit in the ensemble settings described. There are photos of the author's drums and of him drumming. Based on June Boyce-Tillman's non-religious model of holistic spirituality and Tim Ingold's notion of correspondences, the author describes how playing drum kit enables him to experience transcendence – the magical nexus at which Materials, Construction, Values/Culture and Expression meet. Each of these domains, and the magic derived from their combination, is illustrated through examples of the author's live and recorded musical collaborations.

Helicopter Flight Dynamics

Helicopter Flight Dynamics

Gareth D. Padfield

Wiley-Blackwell

The Book The behaviour of helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft is so complex that understanding the physical mechanisms at work in trim, stability and response, and thus the prediction of Flying Qualities, requires a framework of analytical and numerical modelling and simulation. Good Flying Qualities are vital for ensuring that mission performance is achievable with safety and, in the first and second editions of Helicopter Flight Dynamics, a comprehensive treatment of design criteria was presented, relating to both normal and degraded Flying Qualities. Fully embracing the consequences of Degraded Flying Qualities during the design phase will contribute positively to safety. In this third edition, two new Chapters are included. Chapter 9 takes the reader on a journey from the origins of the story of Flying Qualities, tracing key contributions to the developing maturity and to the current position. Chapter 10 provides a comprehensive treatment of the Flight Dynamics of tiltrotor aircraft; informed by research activities and the limited data on operational aircraft. Many of the unique behavioural characteristics of tiltrotors are revealed for the first time in this book. The accurate prediction and assessment of Flying Qualities draws on the modelling and simulation discipline on the one hand and testing practice on the other. Checking predictions in flight requires clearly defined mission tasks, derived from realistic performance requirements. High fidelity simulations also form the basis for the design of stability and control augmentation systems, essential for conferring Level 1 Flying Qualities. The integrated description of flight dynamic modelling, simulation and flying qualities of rotorcraft forms the subject of this book, which will be of interest to engineers practising and honing their skills in research laboratories, academia and manufacturing industries, test pilots and flight test engineers, and as a reference for graduate and postgraduate students in aerospace engineering.

Urbanization and the Migrant in British Cinema

This book examines a cycle of films about migration made in the late 1990s and 2000s. It argues that these films present a novel (and radical) aesthetic of planetary urbanization based upon the mobility of the migrant and the dissolution of the city. A stimulating cinematic analysis of our expanding urban fabric, it offers an alternative to the ‘cultural cityism’ of many other films about migration. The author demonstrates that this particular film cycle offers a rare, sustained consideration of the travails and struggles for urban life by migrants beyond and without the city. Yet the city haunts these films like a spectre: the city that has been lost, the ‘present’ city that excludes and the possible ‘cities of refuge’ of the future. Offering new insights into the cinematic portrayal of the figure of the migrant and how this is constructed in relation to urbanization processes, this book will appeal to students and scholars of sociology, film and media studies, human geography, and urban studies.

People and Physical Environment, A Global Approach provides an introduction to the main areas of environmental concern for geographers, environmental scientists and planners at the beginning of the twenty-first century. These include:Pollution of the atmosphere and its impact on our climate; The exploitation of the oceans; Management and supply of fresh water; Degradation of the land, and Biodiversity, and the need to maintain genetic diversity. The book argues that our knowledge and understanding of the environment is now so great that we can predict with considerable accuracy where the skills of science and technology need to be focussed in order to prevent severe environmental damage from occurring. Achieving successful management of the environment has become dependent upon active participation of a society prepared to pay for a high quality of life and the willingness of our elected politicians to legislate and enforce the very highest standards of environmental management. This book will be essential reading for students of geography, environmental studies/science and land use planners and will also contribute valuable information for climatology, biogeography, hydrology, land economy and forestry students.
