This book tells the story of Shelburne Farms, once a magnificent Gilded Age country estate conceived by America s leading aristocrats of the day, Lila Vanderbilt and William Seward Webb. Built between 1886 and 1905, the houses and barns, designed by architect Robert H. Robertson, include Shelburne House, the Webbs stunning Shingle- and Queen Anne-style residence with a formal Italianate flower garden, and the Breeding Barn, which was the largest open-span wooden structure in America. Landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted planned the 4,000 acres of pastureland, woodlands, and trails. Period photographs capture the Webbs original vision, while new photography showcases the splendid results of decades-long restoration. The property is now open to the public. Shelburne House, transformed into an inn, showcases many original paintings, furnishings, and decorative arts.

Saturday, 28 January 1967. It is a day like any other for eighteen-year-old Danny, pulling pints behind the bar of the International Hotel in Belfast, watching the comings and goings of the eccentric clientele. But ordinary days like this are almost over. The hotel has already been witness to the city’s dark tendencies – Danny’s job was only secured after another barman was shot. And with the inaugural meeting of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association the following day, Belfast is on the cusp of changing forever … Widely praised by writers and critics, including Colm Tóibín and A.L. Kennedy, The International is ‘the best book about the Troubles ever written’. The book also contains an essay by Glenn Patterson and a critical essay by Anne Enright. Glenn Patterson is also the author of Burning Your Own, Fat Lad and The Third Party, all published by Blackstaff Press.
How to Value Shares and Outperform the Market

How to Value Shares and Outperform the Market

The simplest way to make money in the stock market is to buy shares when they are cheap and make profits when their prices increase. This technique is known as value investing and is the creed of the world's most successful investor, Warren Buffett. But how do you know when a share price is cheap? This book explains in simple terms how you can develop your own UK share and FTSE100 valuation spreadsheets to calculate share and market valuations. Comparing the valuations to current market prices reveals when shares are underpriced and produces calibrated buy and sell signals. The FTSE100 system, for example, indicates the periods when you should be invested in the FTSE100 and the periods when you should not be. Since 1984 the in-periods have produced 94 times more capital growth than the out-periods.The new valuation system is the heart of this complete practical guide for managing your own investments. It shows how you should be able to double the value of your long-term investments purely through avoiding high commercial fund management fees. Using the new valuation system should help you do a lot better than this and, for example, secure a pension up to eight times larger than that provided by commercial managers. As well as providing comprehensive information about the practical and profitable ways in which you can use the new valuation system, this book is a complete toolkit for creating personal wealth through UK equity investment. It includes risk controls, tax breaks, free information sources and recommendations on the best service providers. In short this book is your first step along the road to financial security.
7 Successful Stock Market Strategies

7 Successful Stock Market Strategies

Successful strategies for high long-term returnsThe long-term benefits of investing in the stock market are clear. For periods of ten years upwards, equities have delivered higher returns than any other non-physical UK asset class. Those investing for the long term should put their money to work in the stock market. In this easy-to-follow practical guide, Glenn Martin introduces seven strategies for index investment in the FTSE 100 and FTSE 250. These strategies can be followed by anyone willing to adopt a systematic approach and accept short-term risk in exchange for long-term rewards. Incredibly, even the most advanced strategy requires no more than an hour per week of your time. The seven strategies involve varying levels of risk. For those who want to commit the minimum time and take on less risk, there are two passive buy-and-hold strategies. Those wanting to commit a little more effort and take on higher risk – with the potential for higher rewards – can use a proven system to time when to invest in the stock market and when to hold funds as cash. The most advanced strategies, which carry higher short-term risk with the potential to achieve spectacular long-term returns, make use of the gearing offered by spread trading. Each strategy has a set of clear and simple instructions, plus there are historic performance tables and the expectations for future returns.Unique features of this innovative book include:- How to construct a spreadsheet to produce a valuation of the FTSE 100 and the expected returns from a five-year investment in the index. These valuations constitute buy/sell signals which have delivered a profit for every historic period in the market.- How to extend the spreadsheet to calculate post-tax returns tailored to your own tax circumstances.- A Market Momentum System that uses simple moving averages to signal when you should exit the market to minimise the impact of major market crashes.- 30-year track records for all the investment strategies.- A system for creating a synthetic tax-free FTSE 100 tracker using FTSE 100 spread trades.- A FTSE 100 spread trading simulator that enables you to test the historic returns you would have achieved according to your appetite for short-term risk. At the highest level of short-term risk, £1,000 would have grown to more than £12,300,000 over 30 years, with all of the gains being tax-free.Leaving your cash in a deposit account could see its real value whittled away by poor interest rates and inflation. If you are looking for a way to grow your money significantly over time by following a straightforward investment plan, then this book shows you how.

With Sonny Montes and Mexican American Activism in Oregon, Glenn May makes a major contribution to the literature on Oregon and Chicano history. On one level a biography of Oregon’s leading Mexican American activist, the book also tells the broader story of the state’s Mexican American community during the 1960s and 1970s, a story in which Sonny Montes had an important part.Montes played a key role in the birth of a Chicano Movement in Oregon during the 1970s, a movement that coalesced around the struggle for survival of the Colegio Cesar Chavez, a small college in Mt. Angel, Oregon, with a largely Mexican American student body. Montes led the community in collective action—sit-ins, protest marches, rallies, prayer vigils—always with a consistently high level of Chicano support. The actions received wide media attention, making Sonny Montes a visible public figure.By viewing Mexican American protest between 1965 and 1980 through the prism of social movement theory, May’s book deepens our understanding of the Chicano Movement in Oregon and beyond as well as providing a much-needed account of the Mexican American community in Oregon during that time period.Sonny Montes will appeal to readers interested in modern social movements, Mexican American history, and Pacific Northwest history. It is an essential resource for scholars and students in those fields.

This examination of French trade with Asia analyzes France's attempt to establish a mercantile empire in the East by breaking into the lucrative market of the Indian Ocean. Between 1664 and 1674, France advanced a vigorous strategy of commerce and colonization. It founded the powerful East India Company and constructed a large royal fleet as the principal instrument for entrenching French power in Asia. Drawing on archival sources, Ames offers a new interpretation of France's mercantilism in the context of the rise of the world market economy of the early modern period. This study sheds new light on the reign of Louis XIV, the mercantilist theories of Colbert, the origins of the Dutch War, and the Asian trading empires of the French, Dutch, English, and Portuguese during the late seventeenth century.

In these remarkable personal testimonies, six people, who were all born around 1900, reflect on the changes in their lives as old age comes upon them. Photographs from their family albums and portraits made by Glenn Busch at the time of the interviews join together with their words to create deeply personal statements that are neither intrusive nor condescending. These are ordinary people whose stories are compelling not because they tell of great deeds or famous people but because they are like us. The voices are wistful, humorous, resentful, cantankerous, resigned, proud, and grateful. The six subjectsZita Edmunds, Glenys Lewis, Alex Coutts, Beatrice Collins, and John and Muriel Morrisonrepresent several social and economic backgrounds, from coal miner to clergy. The context of their reflections are the events of the 20th century; they speak of the personal impact of wars, economic depressions, immigration and emigration, and economic and social change. As they describe their lives, they explore with us the meaning of old age, the fear and acceptance of death, the deterioration of their bodies, and the resilience of their spirits. The words of the title were spoken by Zita's husband on his deathbed and they recall the importance of reminiscence, the wealth of memories. With Glenn Busch's respectful urging, these people have taken time at the end of their lives to tell us about their journeys. They are a rich and poignant experience. Author note: Glenn Busch is a writer and photographer who lives in New Zealand.
